Washington hangs on to top Escambia for first victory of sea
Written by Kevin Robinson News Journal correspondent

The Washington High Wildcats played the role of spoiler at Escambia High's homecoming, edging out the Gators in a 27-22 victory.

Both teams looked out of sync in the first quarter, but early in the second, the Gators began to find their groove. Escambia wide receiver T.J. Myers scored on a 30-yard pass from Jake Durant to put his team up by six.

The Wildcats struck back immediately with an 80-yard bomb from quarterback Clay Hinton to Dejon Funderburk. It was the first of three touchdowns from the duo.

The Gators' next two drives ended in field goal attempts. Kicker Raphael Binder missed the first, but drilled the second, giving his team a 9-6 halftime lead.

Escambia increased its lead in the third, when quarterback Jonarius Grimsley found receiver Stanley Tart on a 72-yard touchdown pass.

Down 16-6 to begin the final quarter, the Wildcats went back to Funderburk. This proved to be a good decision, as Funderburk burned the Gators' secondary on a 74-yard touchdown. Kicker Scott Robinson made the extra point, making the game 16-13.

On defense, the Wildcats' Dante Hicks pulled down an interception to put the offense back on the field. Hinton went right back to Funderburk, who pulled down a 21-yard touchdown catch, despite good coverage from two defenders.

On the next series, Hicks got another pick. He ran this one back 66 yards for a TD, essentially closing out the game.

Washington coach Mike Smith said big plays were the difference.

"Funderburk did his thing tonight," he said.
