Escambia High Gators: Schedules and Varsity Game Summary

Escambia squeezes by Tate
Written by PNJ reporter Kevin Robinson
The Escambia High Gators were able to fend off the Tate High Aggies in a narrow victory Friday, winning 24-22.

Both teams ran the ball aggressively in the first half, but Escambia broke the goal line first on a 6-yard run by Jonarius Grimsley and led 8-0 after a conversion.
Tate struck back in the second quarter, scoring on a 22 yard pass from quarterback David Moorhead, to Alex Westergreen. LaVantai Samuel ran the ball for a 2 point conversion, tying the score.
Midway through the second quarter, Grimsley threw his first touchdown of the night, connecting with receiver Stanley Tart on a 27-yard pass. Raphael Binder made the extra point to put the Gators ahead, 15-8. The Gators drove into field-goal range on their next possession, and Binder was able to hit from 33 yards, making the score 18-8 at the half.
Tate answered. Moorhead connected with Westergreen for a second time halfway through the quarter, on a 35-yard pass. Kicker Hagen Mancuso drilled the extra point to bring the Aggies within three.
The Aggies kept up their momentum in the third. The Aggies direct snapped the ball to running back Samuel who pitched the ball to Moorhead. He threw to an undefended Westergreen deep in the Gators secondary, for a 60-yard scoreand a 22-18 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the game became a battle for field position. Tart broke the stalemate for Escambia, by catching a 32-yard pass from quarterback Joey Cannon. The Aggies blocked the extra point attempt to make the game 24-22, Escambia.
Undeterred, the Aggies marched up field, fighting their way into the red zone. With under two-minutes left, the entire stadium watched breathlessly as Tate line up for the go-ahead field goal. The 37 yard kick fell just short of the goal post, ending a tense, emotional game.
Escambia's head coach Scott Anderson was pleased with his team's progress. He said he didn't know if the team would have been able to pull out the win last season.
"We have strong senior leadership," he said. "We are beginning to understand how to compete and how to win."
