Escambia High Gators: Schedules and Varsity Game Summary

Pine Forest pulls away in rout over Escambia

For a half, it didn't look like Pine Forest was ready to play, but the Eagles pulled away after the intermission to down Escambia 35-8.

Despite leading 14-0, Pine Forest looked sloppy, turning the ball over three times — two fumbles and an interception — and not playing with its usual fire.

"We just kinda challenged them a little bit (at halftime)," Pine Forest coach Jerry Pollard said. "We came out really flat in the first half, feeling sorry for ourselves. The guys hadn't practiced all week, so I think they dug a little deeper at halftime and came back a lot better in the second half."

The Eagles' defense forced a three-and-out on the Gators' first possession of the second half, but Escambia's punt hit a Pine Forest player on the leg and the Gators fell on the loose ball. It was the second time in the game that Escambia retained on a muffed punt.

"I think it's a lack of practice," Pollard said. "We missed about a day and a half of practice when that storm came through. We just sat and watched film and didn't get to get out there. Ya know, we have to practice every day, get out there, work on fundamentals and do the things you're supposed to do."

The win closes out the Eagles' regular season with a perfect District 1-4A record. The Eagles will host Crestview on Nov. 19, and Pollard said he hasn't seen too much of the Bulldogs.

"I've seen them on film against Milton, Pollard said. "I don't know a whole lot about them, but we'll trade some film and see what goes on."

Loucheiz Purifoy continued his solid play, passing for two touchdowns and running for two more. The senior opened the scoring with a 10-yard pass to Trebian Suggs before rolling off two consecutive scoring runs from 13 and 6 yards.

After Escambia's Willie Williams closed the Gators to within 21-8 on a 3-yard run, Purifoy found Shaquille Purifoy from 25 yards out for his final touchdown.

The senior, who has committed to play for Florida next season, finished the game with 122 rushing yards and 49 passing yards.

The loss is the fourth defeat in Escambia's last five games. The Gators close the season with the toughest schedule of any Pensacola-area team, facing three consecutive playoff teams.

Escambia faced District 1-4A runner-up Navarre last week, District 1-4A champion Pine Forest on Friday and close the season with District 1-3A champ Pensacola High next week.

Despite a tough past few weeks, Escambia coach Scott Anderson sees plenty to be happy about.

"We threw the ball better at times late in the game. We ran the option better at times late in the game," Anderson said. "At times we stopped their option well. Every week's a learning experience, and we've got to keep coaching our kids to improve."

Now Anderson turns his attention to Pensacola High. The Tigers are undefeated this season and are ranked as the No. 2 team in Class 3A.

"We're working to bring the tub home," Anderson said. "That game's about the wash tub."
