Escambia High School coaches benched
05 EHSvMHS 004
Written by PNJ Reporter: Thyrie Bland

Escambia High School's head football coach and an assistant coach are under investigation by School District officials and the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
Head coch Scott Anderson and assistant coach Timothy Jansky both are on paid administrative leave while the Sheriff's Office probes allegations they tried to intimidate a football player into not pursing criminal charges against another player.
One player has accused the other of punching him in the head, the Sheriff's Office said.
Anderson could not be reached Friday for comment. Jansky would not comment when he was reached.
No charges have been filed against the coaches.
The investigation is ongoing, Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Mike Ward said Friday afternoon.
The team's defensive coordinator, Kerry McDowell, coached the Gators on Friday night against Milton High School. Milton won the game, 14-6.
Athletic director Roger Mayo said decisions on the team's future would be made on a "day-to-day basis."
Escambia High Principal Mike Sherrill asked some school staff members who are former football coaches to be on the sideline Friday night to support the team.
Sherrill talked to the team after school Friday and explained the situation to the players.
"We want our kids to have the best opportunity, obviously, in what's a difficult situation," he said.
The player accused of throwing the punch has been suspended from school and can't participate in extracurricular activities, Deputy Superintendent Norm Ross said. The other student was not suspended and is in school.
The parents of the student who was punched pursued a criminal charge against the suspect. The parents allege that a coach approached their son and tried to coerce him into dropping the charge, the Sheriff's Office said.
The Sheriff's Office sought a warrant from a judge charging the player with battery.
As of Friday afternoon, there was not an active warrant for the student, Ward said.
The School District's investigator is conducting an internal investigation into the incident. "The allegation is there was an incident that occurred with two student-athletes and perhaps there were things said that should not have been said, obviously," Ross said. "The two coaches, perhaps, did not handle some things correctly."
Ross said he also could not talk specifically about what led to the decision to put the coaches on leave.
"The allegations are serious enough from what we've heard from the investigator," he said. "In order to make sure you have a wholesome investigation, you remove those two principal individuals from the scene."

First & 10: Ten questions with Escambia High coach Scott Anderson

Written by PNJ reporter Brady Aymond

Q. Where are you from originally? High School/College?

A. I'm originally from Byfield, Massachusetts. I went to a private school named Governor Dummer Academy there and went to college at Georgia Tech.

Q. Why did you decide to get into coaching?

A. As a walk-on at Georgia Tech, I had some medical issues, and (Georgia Tech coach) Pepper Rogers and his staff offered me a chance to be a student coach. About the time I was getting ready to graduate, I decided to stay in coaching. My degree is in Aerospace Engineering, graduated with honors. I'm pulling down the average salary of Georgia Tech Aerospace Engineering grads.

Q. Who has been your biggest influence on your coaching style?

A. I think there's bits and pieces I've taken from a lot of different people. The most recent major influence was Tom Fallaw of Cairo, Georgia. He and his staff are the most recent influences. Some of the things in terms of how we teach the kids I got from Bob Wylie (current Oakland Raiders offensive line coach). In terms of some of the things we do in the passing game I got from my days at Duke, right after coach (Steve) Spurrier was there. Some of the spread stuff we do comes from Kevin Wilson. I've tried to learn from everybody I've worked with and for over the years. A guy that had a major influence on my career as far as how I prepare is Ray Dorr, who I coached with at Southern Illinois. I've had a lot of positive influences, tried to take the best from each.

Q. What was your favorite football team growing up?

A. I guess it was probably the Boston Patriots, to show you how old I am. I'm old enough to remember when they played in Harvard Stadium. To a certain extent, I'm still a Patriots fan. I really like coach (Bill) Belicheck and the way he coaches and prepares.

Q. If you could visit any stadium for any matchup, what stadium and what matchup would it be?

A. Honestly, I'd want to be playing a team from the south in the Citrus Bowl in December for the Class 6A state championship.

Q. Who is the best player you've coached against?

A. I was on defense at the time, but I was a student assistant at Georgia Tech when North Carolina had Lawrence Taylor on defense and famous Amos (Lawrence) at tailback. Those two were pretty good ones.

Q. What keeps you in coaching?

A. I enjoy the interaction with the young people and helping them. One of the most rewarding thing as a coach is seeing their progress from freshman to when they graduate. Q. If you could change anything about the coaching profession, what would it be?

A. I'm sure I'm going to say the same thing as most coaches and that's greater pay. The taxpayers certainly don't want to hear that.

Q. What would you say has been the best moment of your coaching career?

A. The best one was probably would have been 1998 at Kentucky State. We were an underfunded, Division II, historically black school and went down and played a school in North Carolina (in the Pioneer Bowl). They were phenomenal on defense and we won that game by outscoring them. I think we showed a lot of people you can overcome not having enough scholarship and other things if you have good kids and you coach them.

Q. If you could spend one day with any legendary football coach, past or present, who would it be and why?

A. I'd like to spend the day with either coach (Nick) Saban or coach (Bill) Belicheck. I'd like to talk to them about their philosophy and their attention to detail.

Hi-tech coach: Escambia's Anderson studied engineering, wanted to be astronaut
Coach Anderson

PNJ Reporter D.C. Reeves • dcreeves@pnj.com • September 10, 2010

When Escambia High football coach Scott Anderson left for college, the plan was to become an astronaut.
"I was a child of the space age," Anderson joked. "But my eyes weren't ever good enough to become a pilot."
The dream was just a fitting start to a decorated and unusual football coaching trek.
The son of a high school football coach, Anderson majored in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech. But the Massachusetts native opted to follow in his father's footsteps and has for more than three decades. He has held 14 different high school and college coaching positions in 31 years, a resume that has required 12,142 miles of moving — or about halfway around Earth at its equator.
I've kept U-Haul in business for a while," he quipped.
The three decades of work have also allowed Anderson the time to work all over the field, getting position coaching stints for running backs, quarterbacks, linebackers, defensive ends, kickers and punters. He's even been fired after one high school football game.
Tonight, the man who's seen it all looks to guide Escambia to a surprising 2-0 start as it takes on West Florida. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
"When it stops being fun, that's when it's time to hang up your whistle," Anderson said. "When the success of the players doesn't mean anything to you anymore, that's when it's time to hang it up. This was an exciting opportunity for me because they have an administration that was committed to young people, and I'm really more excited now that I'm here."

Injuries created opportunity

When too many injuries forced Anderson from walk-on player to student coach at Georgia Tech in 1979, he fell in love with the new gig.
"I enjoyed the interaction with the players so much," Anderson said. "I enjoyed watching them develop. I enjoyed the mental aspects of the X's and O's, so that's when I decided to pursue it as a career."
You certainly can't question his passion for coaching. He bounced from Atlanta to Los Angeles to work as a graduate assistant at Southern California. Then came Southern Illinois. Then Gulliver Prep in Miami. Then the University of Texas. Then West Texas State. Then Duke. The list, which requires two full resume pages, goes on and on.
He's coached players that made it to the NFL, like former standout Cleveland Browns Eric Metcalf. He's had stops at four different major conference Division I-A programs — three as a grad assistant (Texas, Southern Cal, Georgia Tech) and one as Duke University's running backs coach (1990-93).

From colleges to preps

After Duke in 1993, he spent nine more seasons at smaller universities and junior colleges. Then came the Lake City Columbia High job, where he was fired after one game. Three more high school stints followed.
Then, this fall, Anderson was the beneficiary of a whirlwind coaching search after Escambia coach Jimmy Nichols stepped down on August 10. Let go at East Gadsden High outside of Tallahassee after four seasons there — posting a 15-24 record and the first two non-losing seasons in school history — Anderson had already taken an assistant coaching job at Cairo (Ga.) High, one of the top high school football programs in Georgia.
But when told about the opening by another former Escambia High coach, Dwight Thomas, he jumped at the chance. One of 13 candidates interviewed, Anderson was hired and his first day came just seven days before the Gators' season opener. He met the players before their preseason game against Pensacola High.
"We were left just wondering who was going to be the next coach," said senior fullback Willie Williams. "The new coach is huge for us. He listens. He explains the basics for us. He's a real good coach."

Week 1 success

And without even knowing all of his players' names — something he admits he's still working on — Anderson guided Escambia to a 27-14 win over Panama City Rutherford. He hopes to do the same thing tonight.
"When the lights come on, as coaches you don't know how players are going to respond," Anderson said. "But (last week) made it very, very exciting."
Anderson is already making a good impression around campus.
"I think there has been a wholesale change in some attitudes," Escambia athletic director Roger Mayo said. "I had a couple seniors come to me after his (Anderson's) first Monday practice, one where they lined up and hit a little bit, and they told me, 'I've never been so sore in my life. But it was fun.' I think Scott will do a great job."
There's football, which Anderson knows well after 31 seasons.

And if Escambia High ever starts a space program, their head football coach will still keep them in good hands.

Warm welcome for Emmitt Smith

Former NFL star home to film show about his life

Jason Blakeney • jblakeney@pnj.com • June 4, 2010

As the Escambia High School band played its fight song, Smith — a former Gator and soon-to-be Hall of Famer — made his way toward ESPN's Rick Reilly.

With a few hugs and several gator chomps along the way, the NFL's all-time leading rusher walked Thursday through a tunnel of Escambia cheerleaders and the school's JROTC to his seat on the set of "Homecoming with Rick Reilly."

Hundreds of fans filled the Escambia High gymnasium and watched as Smith's entire career was chronicled.

The two-hour program will air on ESPN on Aug. 5, only two days before the former Dallas Cowboys star is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

"I look at (being inducted into the Hall of Fame) as an opportunity to thank so many people who have been inspirational in my life," Smith said. "A lot of it began right here in this city. This city has blessed me tremendously with the foundation I have."

Many of those Smith wanted to thank were in the room Thursday. From his parents, to former Escambia High coach Dwight Thomas, to 26 of his former high school teammates, everyone got a chance to share in Smith's moment.

"He's the toughest kid I've ever coached," Thomas told the audience. "I've coached a lot of bigger, faster and stronger (players) but none as tough."

The former Florida Gators running back became emotional at several points during the program.

Teared rolled down his face as he talked about the importance of Walter Payton during his career and when he watched a replay of the play during which he broke the NFL career rushing record.

Smith became the most moved when given an opportunity to address his former high school teammates.

"You all know who I am," Smith said after taking several moments to wipe tears and catch his breath. "You all know where I come from. ... People come into our lives all the time. Sometimes they come to take, sometimes they come to give. Knowing that you guys are here, I don't ever have to worry about you taking, because you've already given me so much."

Those who could not attend — including his wife Pat, who cannot travel because she is pregnant — joined the show via satellite.

Former Cowboys wide receiver and Hall of Famer Michael Irvin said his place in Canton will not be complete until Smith joins him.

"It can't be a Hall (of Fame) without Emmitt Smith," Irvin said. "He's the NFL's all-time leading rusher. And it's not just who he is on the field. He's a hall of famer off the field, too."

Former Cowboys fullback Darryl Johnston also joined the show on the giant video screen. Johnston blocked for Smith for 10 seasons in Dallas.

Reilly asked Smith if he'd be able to recognized Johnston's rear end after following him through so many holes in the opponents' defenses.

"Anywhere, anywhere," Smith joked. "He's got the greatest butt in the world except for my wife."

It was a celebration of Smith's career — a career that started on sandy football fields in Pensacola and carried him to NFL stardom.

"This is my home right here," Smith said. "This is where I come from."
