Michael Travis proves key in Escambia's win
V03

Jamie Secola • jsecola@pnj.com • September 13, 2009

One key player was missing in Escambia High's football game against West Florida on Friday night.
Running back Marheem Smith, arguably the best player on the Gators' squad, didn't play in the team's 20-12 win against the Jaguars because of a shoulder injury.
But Escambia head coach Jimmy Nichols said to expect Smith back this week when the Gators play at Washington.
"He (Smith) is OK," Nichols said. "We could have played him tonight (against West Florida), but we just wanted to play it safe."
Escambia running back Michael Travis, however, stepped in to fill the hole left by Smith.
Travis ran for 130 yards and one touchdown and was key in the Gators' win.
"It was the same old, same old," Travis said. "With or without him (Marheem Smith)."

Gators line returns with more experience
By PNJ Sports Reporter Jamie Secola • jsecola@pnj.com • August 24, 2009

Escambia High’s football team has an obvious void in its offense: Trent Richardson.
Senior running back Marheem Smith is ready to ease the transition, replacing Richardson as the go-to tailback. Richardson, of course, was arguably the most acclaimed local player since Derrick Brooks in 1990, giving this region plenty of
recruiting attention before signing with Alabama.
Smith is ready to make a name for himself.
“It’s the same as when he (Richardson) was here,” Smith said. “He always pushed us to do better, so we aren’t in the shadow of Trent. It’s just a chance for us to come out in the open and show the talent that we have.”
Smith, who also will start on defense at safety, is being recruited by Southeastern Conference schools, coach Jimmy Nichols said.
“Smith is an incredible backup for Trent,” Nichols said. “We’re excited about it.”
Last year, the Gators’ notable weakness was their offensive line. Though Richardson was the No. 1 high school running back in the state, his linemen often struggled to open holes for him. This year, those linemen are back with more experience and more focus.
“That’s the biggest plus so far is our offensive line,” Nichols said. “Last year, we didn’t do a whole lot of blocking for Trent, because we were too busy watching him run.”
The Gators have something else going for them, too. Their team is stacked with 25 seniors and 18 returning starters — eight on offense and 10 on defense.
Having nearly his entire defense back, including starters like Smith and senior lineman DeAndre Brown, has buoyed Nichols’ outlook on the season.
The defense has played well in preseason, Nichols said.
“Just having that whole year of experience makes such a difference,’’ he said. “I am very pleased with our defense. I’m counting on them.”
Though Escambia will be playing in difficult district this year — alongside Pine Forest, Pace, Tate, Milton and Navarre — Nichols said he believes this should be the best season yet for the Gators since he took over as head coach two years ago.
“We’re really ahead of the game,” Nichols said. “We’ve got mostly veteran players now, so they know what to expect and what we expect and what to do.
“I think this is going to be our best bunch.”
Without Richardson, some may have lowered expectations of the Gators. But the players and coaches have higher hopes for this season.
Smith certainly doesn’t seem to be worried.
“I don’t feel more pressure because, at the end of the day, I just be all that I can be and help my team succeed and be better,” he said.

Life after Trent
Spring 09

Artical by Pensacola Sports journalist Jeff Haws • jhaws@pnj.com • May 23, 2009

Escambia's Smith runs for 136 yards at spring game to help fill void left by Richardson
It may take a little time for Escambia High football fans to get used to not seeing Trent Richardson in the backfield.  If Friday night is any indication, though, Marheem Smith will do his best to at least ease the transition along. It only took him two plays to make his first mark in the Gators' spring game at Pensacola High, breaking the second play from scrimmage through the left side of the line for a 75-yard touchdown run. That was the first glimpse that, while Richardson may be headed to Alabama, the Gators' running game might not have left with him."I know he isn't Trent Richardson, but I think (Smith) can be a great high school running back," said Escambia coach Jimmy Nichols, whose team won the all- varsity scrimmage 8-6. "He's got great speed. He runs a 10.8 (100-meter dash)."And he's a tough kid. I'm excited about our football team. "The biggest reason for that on Friday may have been Smith, who finished with 136 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.  In addition to his 75-yard scamper, he had runs of 31 and 12 yards to add to his night.  Smith has been close to Richardson during his time at Escambia, and he said Richardson's influence helped him get to this point.  "He helped me a lot," Smith said. "He showed me what to do and how to do it. He showed me how to work."  It paid off Friday, and it was needed on a night when Escambia completed just one pass.  Much of that had to do with a quick, athletic defensive front for the Tigers that often found its way into the Escambia backfield to break up plays. The success of Escambia's running game also made passing less necessary, as the Gators outrushed PHS 190-98 on 12 fewer running plays. The bulk of that came from Smith, but Michael Travis' 32 and Quay Dirden's 17 helped build up that total, behind an offensive line that came into this season trying to be a team strength, where last season it was a weakness.  "We made some mistakes," Nichols said. "I think our offensive line, that's where we need help. Last year, that was the worst part of our whole football team. I think they're going to be much, much improved."  If they are, Smith is still unlikely to put up totals like Richardson, but he might not need to in order for the Gators to win ball games.  Friday night, though, was his chance to make an impression on the coaches and fans, and he took advantage of it.  "I wanted to show it (running ability) very badly," Smith said. "It's something I wanted to do. I knew I could do it. I just wanted that one chance to do it."

MaxPreps Weekly Football Awards and King of the Dirty Dozen

MaxPreps National Player of the Week
Trenton Richardson, RB, Escambia (Pensacola, Fla.)

Click here for Trenton's Milton Highlights.

Could “Dancing with the Stars” be next for Escambia High School’s Trenton Richardson after his remarkable performance against Milton Friday night?

The 5-11, 205-pound senior running back carried 26 times for 419 yards and six touchdowns in a 41-7 victory, scoring on runs of 52, 28, 31, 63, 4 and 80 yards.

Despite this performance, and the 1,400-yard season he posted as a junior, it will be difficult for Richardson to earn the nod as the top back in Escambia history. From 1983 to 1986, NFL rushing king Emmitt Smith – winner of the third season of “Dancing with the Stars” – racked up 8,804 yards and 106 touchdowns at the Pensacola school.

Richardson has 630 yards and 10 touchdowns after two games this season on just 51 carries.

KING OF THE DOZEN By the Florida Sports writers Name: Trent RichardsonSchool: EscambiaGrades: SeniorPositions: Running Back

Dirty Deed: Rushing for 400 yards one time in a prep career is impressive. Doing it twice is amazing. Richardson, an Alabama commit, broke the 400-yard barrier for the second time in 12 months, gaining 419 yards and scoring six touchdowns against Milton in a 41-7 victory. Richardson burst onto the national scene as a junior when he rushed for 407 yards in a game.

WEAR-TV Ch3 Pensacola Sports News Interview at Escambia 8/12/08
Every team enters a new season with some degree of optimism. But few expect as big an improvement as Escambia. And few have as compelling a reason. The Gators return Northwest Florida's most-heralded player. And the supporting cast is a year older, and much improved. The Gators finished 2-7 a year ago a stunning pumpkin ride in Jimmy Nichols' fairytale return to coaching after 15 years off.
But Nichols has never sounded more optimistic. No more awkward introductions. This *is* his team now.
Jimmy Nichols, 2nd-Year Escambia Head Coach: You hear more about "team" this year than we did last year. It was more about "me". And this year it's all about team. And that's a good thing.
That's especially true on defense, where the Gators had to get better. A year ago, they won every game in which they held the opponent under 24 points. But they only did that twice.
Marheem Smith, Junior Defensive Back: “We just had to get better, to work together, and work together as a team. We would've been better last year if we'd worked together as a team.”
Jimmy Nichols: “Well, the attitude really is what's different now, with the new staff we got over there now. They believe they can get it done, whereas before, we didn't have a clue. We really didn't. That's sad to say that, but we couldn't stop anybody. So we certainly couldn't get in a scoring match with anybody. But this year the attitude's much better. They're working a lot harder. And, at least they know what they have to do.”
Nichols can't hide his enthusiasm for the offense. The man who coached Emmitt Smith two decades ago has another stud, Alabama-Commit Trent Richardson.
The top-rated running back in Florida runs behind a much-improved offensive line. He frees up Senior Quarterback Anthony Porterfield to run the show.
Anthony Porterfield, Escambia Senior Quarterback: “It makes it a lot easier on me because I know I don't have to make spectacular plays for us to win. I just have to run the offense and make sure we don't turn the ball over. 'Cuz, in any given play, we just have to give the ball to him and he can break for an 80-yard run. So, at the same time, it also helps out in the play-action passing game.”
