East Cobb Football & Cheerleading Families

Dear Mom and Dads,

We want to first thank you for allowing your son or daughter to participate in the 2009 Football & Cheerleading Season for East Cobb Football & Cheerleading.  Football will be a rewarding experience if you are new to Football this year.  I also want to thank the families that had their sons participate in our 2009 Agility Camp.  We hope you enjoyed it and felt that it was valuable for your son.    Your son should have received an East Cobb Vikings shorts and t-shirt as a reward for participating in our camp if you paid for the entire camp.  If you were not in camp or participated one day or two you can purchase the camp wear packet for $20. We are part of the North West Georgia Youth Football League (NWGYFL).  I would encourage everyone to learn about NWGYFL through their website:  www.nwgyfl.com. There are a number of items that you would need to know about and be prepared for as you approach our first day of practice.   First, season begins for all football players & cheerleaders on Monday July 27th at 6:00 PM at the Fuller’s Park Field.  When you arrive you will report to the designated area for your age group which will be marked with a sign.   We will have Coaches and Board Members directing your son to their age group area.   I will conduct a mandatory parent meeting on Monday night for each age group at some point during the first evening of practice.  At least one parent for each player should be present.  We will ask that all of you plan to attend; so be close to where your son’s age group is participating so when we call the meeting you are near by.  Practice will be continuing as we meet so coaches should plan to have their spouse attend for you.   Cheerleader’s parent meeting will be held Tuesday evening during your practice!DO NOT FORGET ABOUT VIKINGS DAY AT DICK’S SPORTING GOODS, our session is this Saturday July 25th from 12-4.  Dicks is offering players, parents, and coaches team packet discounts plus an additional 15% off their total purchase. Example 10% off cleats, 10% off pads, 20% off apparel and an additional 15% their total purchases. Please review the following information that we would like for you to be prepared for this season and the first practice:
  • The first three practices will be in shorts, cleats, T-shirts and your player’s helmet.
  • We do not have a preference as to which cleats you purchase although do be aware that some cleats are heavier than others and the lighter cleat is better.
  • Mouthpiece, it is best to start now to get familiar with it.  We have the correct type of mouthpiece for sale for $3 that you can pick up on your first day or this Saturday at the equipment distribution from 9-1.   You will see many fancy mouthpieces in the stores but some of those we cannot use due to their color or the challenges with staying on the helmet.   If you decide to purchase them outside of the park, please purchase a black or purple mouthpiece and it must attach to the helmet.
  • Each Head Coach determines their practice schedule.  Please check the web-site for each coach’s schedule.  This is subject to change depending on how many teams we have once the teams are composed.  We can practice 5 days the first week and 5 days the second week.   Starting the third week or August 10th we will fall into the 3 day a week practice schedule for the remainder of the season.  The time most coach’s practice is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM however 5 and 6 year olds will start at 5:30 and some Friday practices for some teams will start at 5:30.
  • The first game for white teams will be August 29th and the purple, gold and blue teams will be September 5th. Some teams may play in a Jamboree on a Saturday prior to the first game.
  • Please plan to attend our Opening Ceremony on Friday evening August 14th starting at 5:45 PM.  This is a blast for the kids!  We will have bungee jumping trampolines, moon walks and slides, dunk tank to dunk the coaches, BBQ 1 and many other surprises.  So mark this on your calendar.
  • Based on current registrations we are planning to have the following teams:
    • 5 year old 70-75lb-95lb Purple team with Head Coach John Hodges
    • 6 year old 80-85lb-105lb White team with Head Coach Bill Cannon
    • 7 year old 90-95lb-115lb White team with Head Coach Chip Patterson
    • 7 year old 90-95lb-115lb Purple team with Head Coach TBD
    • 8 year old 100-105lb-125lb White team with Head Coach Carlos
    • 8 year old 100-105lb-125lb Purple  team with Head Coach John O’Hara
    • 8 year old 100-105lb-125lb Gold team with Head Coach Steve McCormack
    • 9 year old 110-115lb-135lb White team with Head Coach Cyrus Hancock
    • 9 year old 110-115lb-135lb Purple team with Head Coach Dennis Brown
    • 9 year old 110-115lb-135lb Gold team with Head Coach Charles Mace
    • 9 year old 110-115lb-135lb Blue team with Health Coach TBD
    • 10 year old 120-125lb-145lb White team with Head Coach Bobby Williams
    • 10 year old 120-125lb-145lb Purple team with Head Coach Marc Klein/Rick Hall
    • 10 year old 120-125lb-145lb Walton team with Head Coach TBD
    • 10 year old 120-125lb-145lb Walker team with Head Coach Duane Legate
    • 11/12 year old 140-145-165lb White team with Head Coach David Piper
    • 11/12 year old 140-145-165lb Purple team with Head Coach TBD

  • After 3 practices with just their helmet the players will start with full pads on Thursday July 30th.   If you miss any one of the 3 mandatory practices with helmets your son must complete 3 practices with just a helmet before you can play in pads.  We have several families on vacation so please explain this to your son because it will be awkward for them when everyone else is in pads.   They will catch up quickly once they get in pads yet they may stand around some because they cannot participate in the full contact drills.
  • You will need to purchase football practice pants on your own.  We will have these for sale at reduced prices in the concession stand during equipment distribution on July 25th as well as the first two practices on July 27th and 28th.  You can also purchase these at Dick’s on Saturday.
  • You will also need to purchase a practice jersey.  We will have them for sale at the park with East Cobb Vikings Football on them.  They will sell for $17.
  • It will be hot the next few months or so and we will have water on the field but we recommend that you bring water and Gatorade for your son’s use.  We also have a “heat policy” that determines if we will practice on a given hot day or start practice a little later.
  • If you still need equipment after the equipment distribution day, we will only be handing out helmets on Monday and Tuesday.  You will need to get the rest of the equipment prior to the first day of full contact on July 30th.  Please have your deposit check for $100 with you as we will be strict on this when we are handing out equipment outside the official equipment distribution days.  Also I ask for your patience because if you sign up late or miss the equipment distribution day we have to size your son before or after practice.  Many of us are coaches so this is the only time we can get to it.
  • Parent on-site:  In our handbook it states we would like to have a parent present during practice.   I want to explain this because I realize that parents at times need to drop their player or cheerleader off due to work, other sibling obligations, etc.  It is OK to drop off yet we ask you to please make sure another parent has your cell phone number and will take responsibility should something happen with your son.   We have very few injuries yet because we are a contact sport you will want to know how your son got a bruise, etc.
  • Player weights:  This year we have added 20lb’s to each age group for a kid to play.  I know some of you are thinking that my son is so little that a kid this size will hurt him when he hits my son; this seldom happens due to the weight of a player.  Our goal is to see every kid play regardless of size yet experts have studied this and the kids that are in the new 20 lb increase category will not be able to advance the ball and will have to play between the tackles, this will prevent any serious injury from a kid rolling over a smaller kid.  Our coaches are aware of the potential size difference and will be sensitive to this in practice.   We have had kids in the past go an entire season and never had to do a tackling drill against a kid that was significantly bigger.    We do not have many that fall into this category so please do not worry.   Also keep in mind many leagues across the Country in your son’s age are playing unlimited weight classes and Football is still as big as ever in those communities.  In short, there is no correlation between a weight of player and the increase possibility of injury.
You will most likely have other questions regarding the season such as team splitting, the game and practice schedule just to name a few.   We will try to answer many of these questions at the parents meeting.  This letter was to get you started for the season.  We want the first day to run smoothly and to do this we need all of our Coaches focused on the players.   Head Coach’s will also be conducting meetings as practices proceed.  Thank you again for your patience, understanding and participation with East Cobb Vikings Football & Cheerleading Association.     Go Vikings!  Greg HardinLeague President404-775-0567

Tuesday, March 17

Dear East Cobb Youth Football and Cheerleading Families,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful off season from Football!  Quite a bit has happened since our season ended so I wanted to bring you up to date on our East Cobb Vikings.    I am very excited to tell you we now belong to the North West Georgia Youth Football League of which there will be at least 14 parks represented and an additional 2 parks that are being considered.  The Vikings website as you should know is
www.eteamz.com/ecv or www.eastcobbvikings.com.

The new leagues impact to your son or daughter will only be more positive.   I will take a moment to explain to you why we have joined a new league.    The East Cobb Vikings are now the 3rd largest park of over 25 parks that have football and cheerleading that cross over Cobb, Paulding, and the Cherokee County areas with over 400 players and cheerleaders.   Because of our growth we had an opportunity to join a League that has teams similar in size to us, i.e. Acworth, Due West, Kennesaw, Smyrna, Fair Oaks, etc.

The result of this is more team competition, more D2 teams and more teams with cheerleaders thus resulting in more fans attending each of our games both home and away.   This will also present to us all a more organized game setting atmosphere for our sons and daughters to cheer and play football.  Another exciting addition is that our new league will allow children that previously played up because of the weight limit to now be allowed to play in their age group and friends from their grade.

Our on-line registration for the fall 2009 season will begin April 1st.   Our website has been updated with Football and Cheerleading camp dates, so you can go ahead and mark your calendars.   This year during our camps the High School Coaching Staffs from Wheeler, Walton, Pope and Lasister have agreed to host one night each during the camp.

Our on-line registration continues to be a great success and this year we are adding a payment flex plan feature so you can pay a little bit at a time if you like.   Our fees for Football and Cheerleading have not changed from last year.

This season, we will be wearing the purple uniforms to which a few of our teams had last year yet this year everyone will wear purple.  The jerseys have all been ordered, and thank you to everyone who took such great care of your game pants.  They have all been laundered professionally and look pretty good.

Finally, thank you for your support of the East Cobb Football and Cheerleading Program.  Each year we strive to make our program the best it can be, and this upcoming year is no exception.  We have a tremendous amount of support on the Board this year, and we are all looking forward to a terrific 2009!  If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to ask.  Feel free to call me @ 678-735-0427 or write me at

Sincerely,

Greg Hardin, League Coordinator, East Cobb Vikings Football and Cheerleading
