Beyle named track athlete of the year

East Chapel Hill junior Jon Beyle screams after releasing a throw in the shot put during the NCHSAA 4A Track State Championship in Greensboro on Friday, May 18, 2012. Beyle won both the shot put, with a distance of 55' 1.5", and the discus, with a distance of 161' 3".

East Chapel Hill junior Jon Beyle has been named the Triangle’s Track-and-Field male athlete of the year by the News & Observer.

The post-season honor comes after Beyle won the N.C. High School Athletic Association state indoor championship in shot put and then followed that with championships in both shot put and discus at the NCHSAA outdoor championships this spring.

The N&O awards take scholarship into account. Asked about his favorite subject in high school Beyle responded "Does lunch count?" Nonethless, he finished last semester with a 3.8 GPA at one of the nation’s most academically demanding high schools.  (full story)
