By Jonathan Tuttle : The Herald-Sun
The morning's ceremonies were colored by the retirement of East Chapel Hill High School Principal David J. Thaden. What he called the "retirement hoopla" was evidenced long before he rose to speak, when the senior class presidents' speech was interrupted with a standing ovation at the first mention of Thaden's name.
As a parting gift, the senior class raised money and laid out plans for an outdoor classroom that will be dedicated to Thaden. Building East Chapel Hill High School's reputation as its first principal, Thaden was lauded specifically by the senior class presidents for "constructing a community." (full story)

Amid the awards, varsity letters and league honors distributed last week at East Chapel Hill High School's spring sports dinner, one somber moment managed to insert itself into the festivities.

GREENSBORO -- East Chapel Hill's Carolyn Baskir didn't have a strategy for the 1,600-meter race at the state 4-A track and field championships at N.C. A&T on Saturday.
All the junior knew is she wanted to get the lead and then hold on for the win.

East principal Dave Thaden announces retirement
By Kirk Ross
Staff Writer
After three decades as an educator in Chapel Hill, much of that as the first and only principal at East Chapel Hill High, Dave Thaden announced this week that he’s stepping down.
Dave Thaden - The Man
Thaden cited his 30-year mark and a need to focus on his health as the reasons for this decision.
He attributed both his longevity as an educator and his success as a principal to a love for his students and sincere interest in seeing them learn and develop as people.
Dave Thaden - The Paper Mache
“It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning,” he said. He called being a high school principal engaging and demanding, but at times downright silly. (full story)
