East Chapel Hill’s Jon Beyle was a double champion in the shot put and the discus. It was a very memorable finish to an outdoor season that hasn’t gone the way the Wildcat wanted.
“It’s been a struggle since adding the discus back in,” Beyle said. “Everything’s just been a little off, going back and forth between the two events. I started out really bad today in the shot, but got a good thrown in on my fourth throw, then the fifth one was good and the sixth really good.”
He won the shot at 55-1 ½, then took the discus at 161-3, more than 10 feet ahead of the runner-up.

STATE TRACK: Jordan's Perry named 4-A girls' MVP; Falcons 3rd
by John McCann
In field events, East Chapel Hill’s Jon Beyle was outstanding, winning state championships in the discus and the shot put. He said he got it done by relying on solid technique over raw power.
“You can see I’m not the biggest thrower out here. It’s definitely technique that gets me there,” Beyle said.
The East Chapel Hill boys finished eighth overall.

Normally, a 0-0 tie is the most dreaded of outcome in soccer. giving ammunition to the game’s haters who claim it lacks enough action.
The last Friday’s scoreless tie between 4A East Chapel Hill and host 2A Carrboro seemed more than fitting for two young teams, whose respective head coaches seemed satisfied with the outcome. (full story)

When a spring season gets off to a slow start due to rain and cold, any win is a good win. A win over your arch-rival is even better.
East Chapel Hill’s softball varsity rebounded from an 8-3 loss to Cedar Ridge with an 11-10 victory Thursday over Chapel Hill, keyed by a dramatic two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to clinch the win. (full story)

Swimming & Diving State Championships: Triangle swimmers place individually at state meet
by Mike Blake
CARY -- Three outstanding Triangle girls and one boy combined for seven individual titles in Saturday's N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A swimming and diving state championships. But relays are a big component to winning NCHSAA titles, and that's what was missing as no Triangle team was ever in serious contention for top honors.
On the girls side, Cornelius Hough's girls had a whopping 314 points - well ahead of Panther Creek's runner-up total of 190. Charlotte Providence's boys won their third straight title, edging the Hough boys 265-213. (full story) (full results from NCHSAA)

Swimming: Wildcats leaving PAC-6 in their wake
BY HENRY GARGAN, Correspondent for The Chapel Hill News
CHAPEL HILL - For the East Chapel Hill swim team, "Senior Night" doesn't incorporate the pageantry with which many other sports celebrate their graduating classes.
No bouquets or rounds of applause. No teary center-court recognition.
So, on their senior night, the Wildcats celebrated in the way they know best: winning.
East survived its first and likely only conference test in Thursday's victory over PAC-6 rival Jordan. East's girls won 194-81 while the boys defeated the Falcons 166-95. Together, the Wildcat swimmers highlighted their team's depth by scoring points in nearly every event and sweeping the relays.

Swimming: Getting in deep - East Chapel Hill scores a boatload over Cary Academy
BY HENRY GARGAN, Correspondent
CHAPEL HILL - One of the most-quoted maxims in competition states that a team should never look past an opponent. But with post-season prospects like those on the horizon for East Chapel Hill's varsity swimmers, it's hard not to.
The Wildcats began their quest for another state title on Tuesday with a landslide victory against Cary Academy at Homestead Aquatics Center. East Chapel Hill's boys scored 206 points to the Chargers' 77, while the girls prevailed by a margin of 186-95. (full story)

NCHSAA Realignment: The good, the bad and the ugly
E. Warnock - The Chapel Hill News
The NCHSAA shipped its initial draft of the proposed 2013-17 realignment to member schools last Wednesday. It's now posted on www.nchsaa.org/ (under "Select A Topic" and then "Realignment").
As one should note from the word "draft," the proposal is far from final. As Winston Churchill would have said: "This is not the end; it's not even the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning."
East Chapel Hill and Southern Durham would be dropping from the 4A classification for larger schools down to the 3A classification, and so they'd leave the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Cedar Ridge is to move up from the smaller schools' 2A to 3A.
The NCHSAA proposal for a new 3A Conference 10 comprises Cedar Ridge, Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill, Eastern Alamance, Northern Vance, Orange, Southern Durham and Oxford Webb. It would re-unite natural rivals Cedar Ridge and Orange, as well as Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill, and would bring them all into one conference for the first time ever.

BY LUKE DECOCK - Staff Writer
CHAPEL HILL - - - Given the stakes and passion of the basketball rivalry between Duke and North Carolina, it's almost unfair to expect the same from football.
If the heat of the basketball rivalry has often produced a career performance from a role player, the Tar Heels got one Saturday from kicker Thomas Moore. A weak 2-for-7 coming into the game, Moore was 3-for-3, including a career-long 46-yarder.

ROXBORO — It was wet and chilly Friday, ripe weather for slick balls and dropped passes, but East Chapel Hill’s Alex Moore 25-yard scoring reception in the fourth quarter sealed a 35-21 win over Person.
The victory kept East (2-9 overall, 3-3 PAC-6) in the conversation for a state 4-A playoff berth. East finished alone in fourth place in the PAC-6. The top three teams are guaranteed playoff spots, while East will have a wait-and-see day before wildcard slots are filled. (full story)

Alumni - Football: Kicking habit will carry Tar Heels' Moore
BY ROBBI PICKERAL - Staff Writer
CHAPEL HILL With 25th-ranked Georgia Tech's ability to churn out big yards and big points, North Carolina coach Everett Withers has emphasized the Tar Heels' need to score Saturday.
That puts the onus on redshirt freshman kicker Thomas Moore, who will replace injured senior Casey Barth, to have a solid road debut.
"I don't know that I feel the extra pressure, because I understand that when you're the guy, you've got to get it done," Moore said this week. "I haven't actually had any field goal attempts, but I have enough experience in football that it's really just the same thing - from practice field to the game, you just have to carry it over."
Moore converted both of his extra point attempts after the coaches opted to sit Barth in last week's second half because of a groin pull. Moore's range for field goals, he said, is "50-something." (note: Thomas went 4-4 on PAT's in the Ga. Tech game and had no FG opportunities) (full story)
