Despite a 9-3 start, there was a lingering doubt in coach Ray Hartsfield's mind about exactly where his team stood midway through the season in regards to the PAC-6 conference. Were they as good as they showed in their first league victory over Jordan 59-50 on Dec. 11? Or were they as bad as they looked in getting wiped out 74-54 by Riverside, ranked No. 2 in the 4-A polls, in their final game before holiday break? (full story)

Wildcat women opened against second place Southern, coming out quickly and built a 15-10 lead after the first period. From there it got grim as the Spartans were up 44-32 with only 5:03 left in regulation. The incredible rally culminated with Aileen Savino's free throw to tie the game at 52 all with 5.8 seconds left. Both OT's saw the Wildcats down by 4 points early, with East finally prevailing 66-65 (2OT).
In the men's game the Wildcats played back & forth with the Spartans
and trailed by only a single point at the half, 21-22.
East took the lead early in the 3rd and never left up, winning 52-41.

East Chapel Hill squeezes by Jordan
Wildcats prowling PAC-6 road with success
DURHAM - For a basketball team that had some trouble navigating road trips earlier, East Chapel Hill is beginning to master the ins and outs of away games this season in the Piedmont Athletic Conference.
East Chapel Hill overcame some erratic play mid-game Friday with a strong second half, using two big 3-pointers late in the fourth period and then three straight free throws with 5.4 seconds left in the game to escape Durham Jordan with a 61-58 win.
East Chapel Hill gets a chance to make up its half-game deficit against Riverside (15-2, 6-0) when it hosts the Pirates on Tuesday in Wildcat Gym.

Ryland Jones - UNC
Nick McCrory - Duke
With friends like these, who needs international competition?
Ryland gave it his best but he too came up short as Nick continued his undefeated frosh campaign. The 1 meter event, the high school diving event, was the more tightly contested event of the two as Nick won 383.70 to Ryland's 345.90 (third was a distant 288.83). In the 3 meter Duke ruled, taking the top 3 with Nick in first with 415.05 while Ryland topped the Carolina contenders with 318.90.
It's only 2 years to the London Olympic Games. Stay tuned Wildcat fans.

It was supposed to have happened in December, the last Friday night before the long holiday break. Another one of Chapel Hill's "almost a lot of snow" storm, the one that crippled the East coast, forced the games to postpone until January. The anticipation was rewarded as both contests were superbly entertaining.
In the women's game the Tigers kepy rallying at the end of each period to close the score, until, late in the fourth period, they took the lead. With only 2.6 seconds left in the game the Tigers had possession of the ball and a 2 point lead.
But on their inbound play, they fouled.

Savino (#11) knocks down the back end of the 1 & 1 to send the game into overtime.
East went on to win 54-46. (see all game photos)
The men's game was also tightly played. The score was tied at 31 all with one minute
left in the 3rd period. East then outscored Chapel Hill 25 - 16 to win with a final
score of 56 - 47.

Whisenant (#13) got the 'Cats rolling in the fourth period
as he executed back-to-back field goals. (see all game photos)

Carolina Blanks Stanford To Claim Its 21st Women's Soccer Title

The Tarheels celebrate their 2009 NCAA Championship

Sterling Smith - ECHHS Class of 2005
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - It never gets old.
That was the feeling of North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance and his senior-laden team after the third-ranked Tar Heels pitched a shutout at top-ranked Stanford Sunday afternoon, prevailing 1-0 in the 2009 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament championship game at Aggie Soccer Stadium before a stadium record crowd of 8,536.
The victory, powered by a goal by junior forward Jessica McDonald in the third minute of play, gave the Tar Heels their 20th NCAA title in the 28-yard history of the NCAA Tournament, and Carolina's 21st championship in the sport overall when the 1981 AIAW title is included in the mix. UNC finished the season 23-3-1 overall and won the NCAA title with the fewest wins since the 2000 team won the title with a 21-3 mark.
In the process, Carolina, the only school to have won a national championship while going unbeaten and untied, denied Stanford the opportunity of joining that elite club as the Cardinal saw its season end at 25-1. Ironically, a year ago in the national championship game, the Tar Heels did the exact same thing, beating an unbeaten and untied Notre Dame team 2-1 in the national title game in Cary, N.C.
The title was the third for a nine-member group of UNC seniors who were also on title teams in 2006, 2008 and now 2009. It was also the third title for UNC redshirt junior Ali Hawkins who missed the 2007 campaign with an ACL tear. The nine-member UNC senior class includes Ashley Moore, Tobin Heath, Ashlyn Harris, Sterling Smith, Nikki Washington, Caroline Boneparth, Whitney Engen, Casey Nogueira and Kristi Eveland.

UNC's nine seniors, a class that includes former East Chapel Hill star Sterling Smith, were the winningest senior class in the country over their four years at 94-9-4.

CHAPEL HILL - As he begins his 14th season as East Chapel Hill boys' basketball coach, Ray Hartsfield won't have to worry about rebuilding.
He's gone about assembling his new team through the standard junior varsity route, with some unique measures thrown in --- like getting players off the golf team.
Regardless, there's no arguing with the results of the season opener, where the Wildcats used a 29-8 second half run to blow out Cedar Ridge 76-53 Friday night. The East girls also easily won against Cedar Ridge 54-35. (full story) (girls' game photos)
Wednesday, November 25
As we pause to give thanks this holiday a couple of recent articles about the relative merits of victory off and on the gridiron.
Nov 12, 2009
If there is one universal truth in sports, it is that no one likes to lose. Great athletes accept defeat because they must, but they never enjoy it. Losing can be downright miserable; especially when it comes in bunches.
Losing a game here and there is one thing. Losing streaks are on another level entirely. Going an entire season without a victory? I cannot begin to imagine what that feels like. The Detroit Lions finished 0-16 in the NFL last year, but at least the players got rich just for showing up every week.
It has happened to a number of high school football teams in the Triangle in recent years. One of those local grid-iron squads to endure a winless season was the Wildcats of East Chapel Hill. In fact, until October 16, 2009, the Wildcats had dropped 24 consecutive games. (full story)
Alums recall losing at Harnett Central
- Staff writer
Harnett Central, which plays Middle Creek in the third round of the NCHSAA 4-A football playoffs Friday, is building a reputation for exceptional football.
The Trojans are 13-0 after beating Southeast Raleigh 27-21 in overtime last week and have gone 55-9 during the past five seasons.
But Central was once known for something else. In the Oct. 7, 1985 edition of Sports Illustrated, the Trojans gained national attention for losing.
Todd Taylor, a junior lineman that year, had written what it was like to play for a team that had lost 36 straight games and had managed to score only one touchdown during the 1984 season. (full story)

Coaches always worry about Senior Night performances, worried that the emotion of the moment will interfere with the performance of the team. That might have been the case on Thursday as Carrboro scored quickly. But on that soggy and drizzly night, it was just the wake up call the Wildcats needed as they then dominated the action with fifteen corners, scoring 4 times.
