East Chapel Hill’s Jon Beyle was a double champion in the shot put and the discus. It was a very memorable finish to an outdoor season that hasn’t gone the way the Wildcat wanted.

“It’s been a struggle since adding the discus back in,” Beyle said. “Everything’s just been a little off, going back and forth between the two events. I started out really bad today in the shot, but got a good thrown in on my fourth throw, then the fifth one was good and the sixth really good.”

He won the shot at 55-1 ½, then took the discus at 161-3, more than 10 feet ahead of the runner-up.

by John McCann
In field events, East Chapel Hill’s Jon Beyle was outstanding, winning state championships in the discus and the shot put. He said he got it done by relying on solid technique over raw power.

“You can see I’m not the biggest thrower out here. It’s definitely technique that gets me there,” Beyle said.

The East Chapel Hill boys finished eighth overall.

LAX-Women Playoffs: Wildcats survive scare, advance past Gibbons

East Chapel Hill had let their large lead evaporate. On the other side of the field, Cardinal Gibbons had orchestrated a thrilling comeback.

Then Sydney Holman, an East Chapel Hill midfielder, changed the momentum of the game – and the Wildcats’ season.

Holman set up and scored the only goal for the Wildcats in the second half. That proved to be just enough for East Chapel Hill in its 10-9 dramatic win in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls lacrosse playoffs.

The Wildcats (15-3) will play Green Hope (18-0) in the semifinals next week.  (full story)

CHAPEL HILL — East Chapel Hill, the top seed from the PAC-6, uncharacteristically started making major mistakes in the field late in the game Friday ngiht.

As a result, the Wildcats gave up eight runs in the final two innings of an 11-6 loss to Wake Forest-Rolesville, abruptly ending a fabulous season in the opening round of the state 4-A baseball playoffs.

“We picked the wrong game to have our worst game of the year,” East Chapel Hill coach Phil Woodell said. “At this point, it’s one and done and the only team that’s going to finish with a win is the state champions.”

Softball Playoffs: Middle Creek swamps East 21-5

In a meeting of #3 seeds the visiting Cougars jumped out to an 12 run lead before the 'Cats had their first at-bat.  East pitcher Sydney Levine was torched with 18 hits while the defense committed 7 errors.  Senior Jill Leary and freshman Sarah Towne both were perfect at the plate but it was a case of too little too late.  East's post spring break 7-game winning streak came to an end Monday against Person and finished conference play at 8-4.

Swimming & Diving State Championships: Triangle swimmers place individually at state meet

by Mike Blake
CARY -- Three outstanding Triangle girls and one boy combined for seven individual titles in Saturday's N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A swimming and diving state championships. But relays are a big component to winning NCHSAA titles, and that's what was missing as no Triangle team was ever in serious contention for top honors.

On the girls side, Cornelius Hough's girls had a whopping 314 points - well ahead of Panther Creek's runner-up total of 190. Charlotte Providence's boys won their third straight title, edging the Hough boys 265-213. (full story)    (full results from NCHSAA)

Swimming: Wildcats leaving PAC-6 in their wake

CHAPEL HILL - For the East Chapel Hill swim team, "Senior Night" doesn't incorporate the pageantry with which many other sports celebrate their graduating classes.

No bouquets or rounds of applause. No teary center-court recognition.

So, on their senior night, the Wildcats celebrated in the way they know best: winning.

East survived its first and likely only conference test in Thursday's victory over PAC-6 rival Jordan. East's girls won 194-81 while the boys defeated the Falcons 166-95. Together, the Wildcat swimmers highlighted their team's depth by scoring points in nearly every event and sweeping the relays.

NCHSAA Realignment: The good, the bad and the ugly

E. Warnock - The Chapel Hill News
The NCHSAA shipped its initial draft of the proposed 2013-17 realignment to member schools last Wednesday. It's now posted on
www.nchsaa.org/ (under "Select A Topic" and then "Realignment").

As one should note from the word "draft," the proposal is far from final. As Winston Churchill would have said: "This is not the end; it's not even the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning."

East Chapel Hill and Southern Durham would be dropping from the 4A classification for larger schools down to the 3A classification, and so they'd leave the Piedmont Athletic Conference. Cedar Ridge is to move up from the smaller schools' 2A to 3A.

The NCHSAA proposal for a new 3A Conference 10 comprises Cedar Ridge, Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill, Eastern Alamance, Northern Vance, Orange, Southern Durham and Oxford Webb. It would re-unite natural rivals Cedar Ridge and Orange, as well as Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill, and would bring them all into one conference for the first time ever.

Alumni - Football: Kicking habit will carry Tar Heels' Moore

- Staff Writer

With 25th-ranked Georgia Tech's ability to churn out big yards and big points, North Carolina coach Everett Withers has emphasized the Tar Heels' need to score Saturday.

That puts the onus on redshirt freshman kicker Thomas Moore, who will replace injured senior Casey Barth, to have a solid road debut.

"I don't know that I feel the extra pressure, because I understand that when you're the guy, you've got to get it done," Moore said this week. "I haven't actually had any field goal attempts, but I have enough experience in football that it's really just the same thing - from practice field to the game, you just have to carry it over."

Moore converted both of his extra point attempts after the coaches opted to sit Barth in last week's second half because of a groin pull. Moore's range for field goals, he said, is "50-something." (note: Thomas went 4-4 on PAT's in the Ga. Tech game and had no FG opportunities)  (full story)

CHAPEL HILL - East Chapel Hill quarterback Drew Davis has set a state high school record, with 43 completed passes in the Wildcats' 44-25 loss Sept. 16 at Carrboro High School.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association confirmed Wednesday that Davis, a 6-3, 195-pound senior, broke the previous single-game record of 40 completions by Ray Stanifer of Porter Ridge, set Sept. 29, 2008, in a 28-24 loss to Concord.
