On each manager, umpire, and player uniform sleeve you will notice an emblem consisting of home plate in the middle of which are the letters TC. The emblem will be worn for the 2009 Eastlake Baseball League Season to remind us of Tyler Cole.

On October 12, 2008, one of our own very special league members left his temporary visiting team here in Eastlake to be added to the roster of his permanent team in Heaven. Today we honor the memory of Tyler Cole and celebrate a life that was exemplary of the character qualities that the Eastlake Baseball League holds dear. Tyler was a player in our league for most of his all too short life. He played from the Slugger division all the way through to our Senior division. For the past few years, when he was not playing in one of our games, he was umpiring in one as a valuable member of our umpire staff. Tyler possessed above average abilities on the baseball field and as a perennial All-Star, he was a member of the 2004 Ohio District One Little League Champion team. Those who had the privilege of watching Tyler grow from a young boy into a young man can testify to the fact that on whatever team he was a part, he made an impact both on and off the field.

The Eastlake Baseball League is predicated upon the stated objective to implant the ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, and respect for authority in order to develop strong, happy young people that will grow to be good, decent, healthy and trustworthy citizens. In Tyler’s brief time on this earth he personified these ideals and became an example to follow for the youth of our league.

It is said that in order to measure your significance on this earth one needs only to place a glass of water on a stand, stick your finger into the middle and then remove it. The hole that is left is the measure of your earthly significance. That statement would be accurate if our significance was based upon our ability to displace a liquid contrary to the laws of physics. What Tyler showed the members of our league is that true significance can only be measured by elevating others, sticking your fingers in their lives to displace pain, suffering and negativity, and leaving a space that is filled by compassion, concern, and charity. Tyler has had his fingers all over this league and the people in it. The fingers of his life have formed pockets in which we can gather the character qualities which he so often embodied. Our league and our lives are better for having Tyler as a part and they are despairing for having him gone.

As we embark on this new baseball season, let us commit as a league and as individuals to carry out the ideals that Tyler’s life so beautifully exhibited. In that way, we honor a life that was lived skillfully and we ensure that our league and its members a measured as significant in the lives of others.
