ELL's Top 10 Safety Reminders

1. Catcher's Throat Guards - All catcher's helmets andmasks are required to have a throat guard regardless of the type ofhelmet/mask. Catchers must wear their helmet/mask anytime they are in areceiving (squat) position regardless of whether it is practice,warm-up, or a game.

2. Bats in the Dugout - Bats must remain in the bat holderuntil the player is heading out of the dugout to bat. Players cannothold bats, nor swing, dangle, wave, or even think about doing so.

3. Thunderstorms - Play must stop and the field must beevacuated if either: thunder is audible at all, or lightning is visibleat all. Players must take cover in vehicles or enclosed buildings (e.g.bathrooms at ESP). Dugouts are not suitable shelters. Play may onlyresume after 30 minutes has passed since the last sign of thunder orlightning.

4. Drop-off & Pick-up - ELL is not a babysittingservice. Please accomplish a face-to-face hand-off of your player tothe manager and/or coaches. Make sure you know when you need to return.Have your cell phone available. If a thunderstorm is present, godirectly to the field since play is suspended and is often cancelled. We strongly encourage parents to stay and observe the practice, orgame, so you know what your player is experiencing and learning.

5. Batting Helmets - Helmets must be worn during anybatting/hitting activity, regardless of whether hitting from a "T",soft-toss, live arm, or swinging warm-up. Check helmets regularly forchips or cracks. Teams should contact the league if replacement helmetsare needed.

6. Collisions - Runners are responsible for avoidingcollisions with fielders. Runners must slide, or otherwise avoidcreating a collision risk. Failure to do so may result in the runnerbeing called out. Deliberate collisions may result in ejection of therunner from the game.

7. First Aid Kits & Ice Packs - Managers are requiredto ensure first aid kits are present at all practices and games. Ensureplenty of ice packs are also available at practices and games.Additional ice packs are available at fields where ELL maintains ashed. It is easy to overlook ice packs with all the other thingsoccurring. Consider assigning someone to pick-up ice packs before thegame and return them after.

8. Medical Release Forms - Managers must carry all teamrelease forms to all practices and games. Parents must ensure allinformation on the release form (doctor, contact numbers, etc.) areup-to-date and correct.

9. Rain - Play may continue during rain. However, if thepitchers start slipping on the mound, the mound must be repaired, orplay must stop. If the infield has enough water on it to fish fortrout, then play should probably stop.

10. Allergies - Please make sure all managers and coaches know player allergies (e.g. bees, peanuts, hay fever, etc.)

Those are the reminders. Safety is everyone's responsibility. Please doyour part. Have a great season, make it fun for the kids, and play safe!
