2010 Eastern Eagles (31 wins – 8 losses)

2010 was another great year for Eastern Baseball as the Eagles won 31 games and the 28th district championship for the 5th time in the past 6 years and were ranked as high as #2 in the state in the coaches poll. The Eagles won 30 games for the sixth straight year and beat many ranked and top tier teams during the season.

Eastern won their first six games of the year, including wins over Germantown, TN (#9 in the state) and over #6 Bullitt East 11-1. The Eagles then had a successful spring break trip to Florida against all Florida schools where Eastern went 4-2 against some tough competition in Jacksonville, including a win over #9 ranked Baker County, FL 9-2.

The Eagles then came back to Kentucky and beat #14 Ballard 7-5, #15 Elizabethtown 2-1, #12 Henderson County 6-5, #7 St. X 7-2, #19 Franklin County 6-2, #18 Central Hardin 8-3, #17 Manual 10-9 and #2 PRP 7-6 in nine innings. In the win over #2 PRP, the Eagles came back from a 4-0 7th inning deficit and a three run deficit with two outs and nobody on to pull out the win. It was the Eagles fourth win in the past five games against highly ranked PRP.

Eastern then beat KCD and Christian Academy in the 28th district tournament before dropping a 2-0 heartbreaker to Ballard in the regional tournament.

John Morris concluded his 9th season as head coach of the Eagles and has led the Eagles to nine straight 20 win seasons and six straight 30 win seasons along with five district championships and nine regional appearances. Coach Morris has an overall record of 275-73 for an overall winning percentage of .790.

The Eagles were once again led by their pitching as Kyle Cornett had nine wins, Troy Spaulding eight, Zach Strecker seven and Spencer Drake six. Cornett beat St. X, Orange Park, FL, Germantown, TN, Ballard and J’town; Drake beat Elizabethtown, Franklin County, Bullitt East and Christian Academy twice; Strecker beat Baker Co., FL, Central Hardin and PRP; and Spaulding beat Henderson County, Corbin and Manual. Drake led the team in ERA at 1.24 while Strecker’s was 1.74. Cornett had 108 K’s while Drake had 91.

Cornett led the team again in hitting with a .481 average and a .613 on base percentage and tied for the most hits with Jimmy Conway with 51. Conway was second in average at .436 while Spencer Drake hit .430 and Zach Strecker .402. Cornett led the team in singles with 51, Drake in doubles with 16 and Conway in home runs with six. Drake led the team in RBI’s with 48 while Cornett had 44. Conway and Cornett led the team in walks with 24 and 23, respectively.

Eastern is sending two players to college to play baseball next year on scholarship. Kyle Cornett has signed at Murray State University as a pitcher and Jimmy Conway at Georgetown College as a catcher.

2009 Eastern Eagles (34 wins – 6 losses)

The 2009 Eastern Eagles baseball team finished the year with the second highest win total in school history with 34 victories and with its highest ranking ever, #2, in the state in the last regular season coaches poll. The Eagles also won the 28th district tournament for the fourth time in the last five years and put together a school record winning streak of 16 games during the season. Eastern has won 30 or more games for five consecutive years.

The Eagles had impressive wins during the season and went undefeated in the regular season against other 7th region opponents. Eastern beat the following ranked teams during the year: #3 PRP 4-1, #5 Male 3-2, #8 Trinity 4-1, #8 St. X 7-5, #14 Western Hills 3-1, #17 Dunbar 10-0, #20 Manual 2-0, #21 Madison Central 10-4, #22 Ballard 8-7, #25 Christian County 3-2.

Head Coach John Morris finished his 8th season as head coach of the Eagles and has an overall record of 242-65 for a winning percentage of .788.

After a loss to start the season to 6th region champion Bullitt East, Eastern won 10 of its next 11 games, including wins over Arnold, FL and Escambia, FL on spring break. Eastern won many other games over quality opponents during the year such as Butler, DeSales, North Bullitt, Somerset, Mercer County, Christian Academy, Woodford County, Campbellsville and Taylor County.

Eastern beat KCD in the district tournament 16-2 and run ruled J’town 11-1 to claim the 28th District Championship. Eastern then opened the regional tournament with an 11-1 win over Fern Creek before losing 5-4 in the regional semi-finals to Ballard in a last inning heartbreaker.

Eastern’s pitching staff again led the way in ’09. Chris Toombs posted 10 wins, Ben Lady eight wins, Tyler Dunaway six wins, Spencer Drake five wins and Kyle Cornett two wins. Lady and Drake led the team in ERA at 1.13 and 1.18, respectively while Drake threw a no-hitter against East Jessamine. Dunaway had wins over PRP, Trinity and Manual, Cornett over Male and Ballard, Toombs over St. X and Christian County and Lady over Western Hills, Dunbar and DeSales.

Kyle Cornett led the Eagles at the plate by posting a school record .532 batting average and .653 on base percentage. He led the team in hits (58), singles (42), doubles (16) and walks (28). Jimmy Conway was second in average at .414 with Ben Lady at .393. Justin McCarty hit .383 and led the team in home runs with eight and RBI’s with 43 while Spencer Drake was second with 31 RBI. Lady was also named the player of the year in the 7th region.

Eastern is sending the following players to college to continue their playing careers. Ben Lady (Murray State University), Tyler Dunaway (Wabash Valley JC) and Justin McCarty (Bryan College, TN).

2008 Eastern Eagles (33 wins - 6 losses)

The 2008 Eastern Eagles baseball team had another stellar season and finished with 33 wins, which marked their fourth consecutive 30 win season. Eastern finished the year with a #5 state ranking and were ranked in the top 10 all season long in one of the toughest regions in the state and again played a very tough schedule. The Eagles twice had a 10 game winning streak during the season and won the 28th District Championship for the third time in the past four years.

The Eagles are now averaging 30 wins per season over the past seven years under Head Coach John Morris and have won 210 games during that span. Coach Morris now has a .781 winning pct. with a career record of 210-59 in seven years.

Eastern beat five top 10 teams during the season, including #1 ranked PRP on their home field 7-4 during the last week of the season. The Eagles also beat #4 Lexington Catholic 8-1, #5 Henry Clay 8-2, #7 Dunbar 13-1 and #7 Male 8-3. In the 28th District Championship game, Eastern beat Christian Academy 6-2 to claim the title.

To start the 2008 season, Eastern won their first 10 games against some quality competition including Bullitt East, Woodford County, Ryle, Seneca, Reynoldsburg, OH and Crestview, FL (Top 10 – 5A in Florida) before dropping a 4-3 extra inning heartbreaker to #7 pre-season nationally ranked and 6A Georgia state champion Walton 4-3.

Eastern beat many other quality opponents during the year, such as Marianna, FL, Christian Academy twice, Russell County, West Jessamine and Campbellsville

After winning the 28th District Championship over Christian Academy (eventual regional champions), the Eagles lost a 1-0 last inning heartbreaker to #3 ranked St. X in the regional semi-finals.

The Eagles were led by their pitching and defense all season long as junior Tyler Dunaway led the way on the mound with a 10-1 record and had 99 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings pitched. He had big wins over Crestview, FL, Marianna, FL, Henry Clay, Male, Bullitt East and Ryle. Chris Toombs had seven wins, including one over Lexington Catholic while Shawn Frederick had six wins and Lucas Harry five wins. Harry had a win over Dunbar and led the team with a 1.50 ERA while teammate Ben Lady had a win against #1 PRP.

Offensively, Ben Lady led the Eagles in average as he hit .441 and led the team in runs (52), hits (56), singles (46), triples (3) and HBP (8). Kiley Jones led the team in on base pct. (.536), doubles (18), home runs (5), and walks (35). Kyle Cornett was the leader in RBI with 38 while Eric Schooley stole 13 bases. Senior shortstop Jake Wise set a team record for fielding percentage during the year at .958 as he made only four errors during the season.

2007 Eastern Eagles (30 wins – 8 losses)

The 2007 Eastern Eagles baseball team not only rebuilt, but reloaded and were able to notch their third straight 30 win season and moved up from being ranked 17th in the pre-season to #5 in the final regular season coaches poll. Eastern had lost 31 of their 32 wins from the previous year, including 12 seniors. The Eagles are now averaging 29.5 wins per season over the past six years under head coach John Morris in the tough 7th region and have won 177 games during that time frame.

Eastern once again beat many top 25 teams, including #6 Ballard, #9 St. X, #11 Butler, #22 Manual, #23 West Jessamine, and #24 Oldham County. Eastern also had other quality wins, including victories over Seneca, Fern Creek, Christian Academy, Boone County and Glasgow.

Eastern started the year 2-2, but won 23 out of 25 games down the stretch, including a school record 15 in a row. Eastern also won their own invitational tournament to open the season, including wins over St. X, Woodford County and Bullitt East. The Eagles then won their second invitational tournament at the end of the season by beating Manual, Campbellsville and North Bullitt. In the middle of the season, Eastern won four of five games in the Southern Invitational including a win over highly ranked Butler and also won two games in the LIT.

The Eagles finished as district runner-ups in the 28th District before losing a heartbreaker 4-3 to St. X in the regional tournament.

Eastern was carried all season long by their pitching. Sophomore Tyler Dunaway led the pitching staff with 10 wins while sophomore Chris Toombs was a perfect 7-0 with four saves. Blake Drake and John Biller each had five wins.

Dunaway had a no-hitter against Fern Creek while leading the team with 108 strikeouts and had a 1.30 ERA. Dunaway’s big wins were against Ballard, Oldham County, West Jessamine, Glasgow and CAL. Drake had big wins against highly ranked St. X, Butler and Manual. Toombs led the staff in ERA at 1.28.

Kiley Jones led the Eagles in just about every offensive category as the junior third baseman dominated at the plate with a school record .529 batting average and a .618 on base percentage. He also had 52 runs, 63 hits, 17 doubles, 5 triples, 7 home runs and 55 RBI’s in addition to drawing 28 walks. Jones hit for the cycle against Fern Creek and hit two home runs in games versus Bullitt East and Seneca.

Eastern is sending another player to play collegiate baseball this season as Blake Drake will pitch for the University of Louisville Cardinals.

2006 Eastern Eagles (32 wins – 7 losses)

The 2006 Eastern Eagles Baseball team posted their second consecutive 30 win season by finishing with a 32-7 record and a #3 or #4 ranking throughout the entire season in addition to their second consecutive District Championship. The Eagles came up with quality wins during the season over #1 PRP, #5 Trinity, #7 Male and #14 Tates Creek while winning 12 games in a row at one point.

The Eagles baseball team have now won a total of 147 games over the past five seasons (29.4 average per year) under head coach John Morris and once again set many individual and team records throughout the season.

Eastern started out the season by winning all of their games in the Southern Invitational Tournament before heading to Florida and finishing third in the prestigious Panama City Invitational Tournament. The Eagles best win in the tournament was against 5A powerhouse Rutherford, FL on their home field by a 5-4 score.

After returning, Eastern won the Bulldog Bash Tournament by winning all four of its games highlighted by a 3-0 win over #7 Male with Bryan Baldini and Kevin Jordan combining on the shutout. A couple of weeks later, the Eagles rallied to beat #5 Trinity at home 6-5 on Jason Chowning’s game winning double before heading to Tates Creek and winning that section of the Fayette Co. Invitational tournament, including a 10-1 win over the #14 ranked Commodores with Bryan Baldini striking out 17 batters.

Eastern then finished the regular season on a high note by knocking off #1 rated PRP on their home field 6-5 on Kiley Jones’ two out two run homer over the scoreboard. Jones then helped Eastern rally in the District Championship game by hitting a homer and the game winning two out two run double in the last inning to beat J’town 5-4.

Eagles pitchers had four no hitters on the season including Kevin Jordan against Holy Cross 1-0 on senior night; Jason Chowning 6-0 against North Bullitt, Bryan Baldini 5-0 against Rockcastle County and Chowning and Baldini combining on a 10-0 no-hitter vs. KCD.

Eastern’s pitching staff was dominant throughout the year as Kevin Jordan had a school record 13 wins, Jason Chowning 10 wins and Bryan Baldini six wins. Jordan led the team with an ERA of 1.60 while Baldini led in strikeouts with 111. Phillip Lady led the Eagles at the plate with a .430 average and a 23 game hitting streak while Wes Cunningham had a .525 on base percentage.

Eastern is sending seven seniors to college to play baseball : Jason Chowning (University of Kentucky), Bryan Baldini (Murray State University), Wes Cunningham (Murray State University), Kevin Jordan (Northern Kentucky University, Anton Garcia (Texarkana Junior College – TX), Kyle Cron (Transylvania University), and Phillip Lady (Indiana University Southeast).

2005 Eastern Eagles (35 wins – 5 losses)

The 2005 Eastern Eagles Baseball team had a season to remember as they broke through the previous school record for wins (27) in a huge way by posting 35 victories over the course of the season. Eastern started the season ranked #30, but quickly moved up in the polls to #9, #8, #6 and to their highest ranking in school history at #4 in the final poll. The Eagles 31 regular season wins were the most in the state.

The Eastern baseball team has now won a total of 115 games over the previous four seasons under head coach John Morris (35 in 2005, 27 in 2004, 27 in 2003 and 26 in 2002). The Eagles won 24 of their first 26 games of the year and also won 14 in a row at one point during the season and Morris was named the Courier-Journal’s Louisville All-Metro Coach of the Year.

Early in the year, Eastern won the Christian County/Hopkinsville spring break tournament by winning all four of its games, with wins over #22 Lawrence County, #25 Hopkinsville, Russell County and Breckinridge County. Eastern then came back home to beat regional rival #11 St. X 9-7 and district rival #4 Ballard 6-0. Jason Chowning was the winning pitcher in both games and threw a no-hitter at #4 Ballard.

The Eagles were also impressive in winning the Cumberland Valley Invitational with three wins at Pulaski County. During the 2005 season, Eastern owned wins over the following teams who either had 20+ wins or who were ranked at one time during the top 25: Lawrence County, Hopkinsville, Russell County, St. X, John Hardin, Greenwood, Ballard (twice), Manual (twice), Pulaski County, East Jessamine, Oldham County and Campbellsville.

In the post season, Eastern started out on a roll as Jason Chowning no-hit Waggener 11-0 for his second no-hitter of the year. Chowning and Bryan Baldini then combined to beat #3 Ballard in the district final 2-0, marking the Eagles first district title since 1991.

In the regional tournament, Chowning pitched the Eagles to victory over #21 Manual 5-0 and Baldini one-hit Seneca 7-0. Eastern then lost a hard fought 3-1 decision to #11 Trinity in the regional finals.

Eastern’s hallmark for the 2005 season was their pitching. Jason Chowning was 12-3 with a 0.98 ERA on the season while Bryan Baldini was 11-2 with a 0.90 ERA. Joe Dailey was 8-0 with a 1.98 ERA while Kevin Jordan was 3-0 with a 1.43 ERA and three saves with 21 appearances. Chowning also set school records for number of wins (12), innings pitched (93), and strikeouts (133).

Chowning also led the Eagles in hitting with a .457 average, breaking the previous school record of .453. He led the team in runs scored (43), hits (59), singles (45) and runs batted in (41). Next in line for Eastern offensively was Anton Garcia (.436), Kiley Jones (.379 and Andrew Blankenbaker (.351). Garcia had the highest on base percentage at .504 and was the leader in stolen bases with 20. All tournament selections:

2004 Eastern Eagles (27 wins – 12 losses)

The 2004 Eastern Eagles Baseball team tied a school record for wins with 27 set last year by once again posting an identical record of the 2003 squad with a 27-12 mark. Eastern was once again ranked in the top 25 in the state and posted their third consecutive 20 win season as the Eagles have won 80 games over the past three seasons.

David Slovak started off the year in grand fashion by tossing a no-hitter against McCreary Central in the opening game of a 5-0 win. Slovak also tossed a one-hitter against Bowling Green later in the week during their spring break tournament as Eastern took second place in their division and he threw a no-hitter later in the season against Waggener.

The Eagles three most impressive wins of the year came against Ballard, Trinity and St. Xavier. Eastern defeated the # 4 ranked Ballard Bruins 5-2 for the first time since 1992 in April, then defeated the # 3 ranked Trinity Shamrocks 5-2 in May and came from behind in the regional tournament to defeat the # 9 St. X Tigers 4-3. Slovak pitched the Eagles to victory in all three games, throwing complete game wins.

During mid-April, the Eagles had their best run of the year as they won 12 of 14 games and came back in May to win eight straight. Of the Eagles 39 games during the season, 21 of them were against teams that ended up winning 20 or more games and many were against top 25 clubs.

Other quality wins included the following : Ryle 5-3, Bowling Green 15-1, Doss 10-2, Hopkinsville 5-1, Danville 4-3, Scott County 3-1, Southern 12-2, Fern Creek 12-1, J’town 13-0, Holy Cross 6-2, Bullitt East 11-1, Central Hardin 9-0 and Christian Academy 7-0.

Slovak led the Eagles in the pitching department with a 9-2 record and a 1.01 ERA. He struck out 110 batters in 83 innings. He also pitched 22 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run during the year. Justin Smith also had an impressive 7-3 mark with a 2.49 ERA in 53 innings while Jason Chowning notched six wins.

Anton Garcia was the leader for Eastern in the offensive department. He led the Eagles with the highest batting average (.426), hits (46), triples (8), RBI (27), walks (19) and on base percentage (.515). Slovak, Rob Hinners and Smith were the next three leading hitters while Slovak led the team in stolen bases with 27.

2003 Eastern Eagles (27 wins – 12 losses)


The Eastern Eagles Baseball team finished out their season with a school record 27 wins and it was the second straight season the Eagles went over the 20 win plateau, which is also a school record. Eastern was also ranked 14th in the state in the final baseball poll. Eastern has now won 53 games over the past two seasons.

After starting the season with losses to two top 25 clubs DeSales (6th region champs) and Butler, Eastern won seven of their next eight games and placed second on their spring break trip to Florida in the annual Beach Bash Classic. During that stretch, the Eagles defeated the St. X Tigers (#8) 2-1, the Boyle County Rebels (#14) 5-3 and the Muhlenberg North Stars (3rd region runner-ups) 11-4.

Eastern’s most impressive stretch of the season was when the Eagles won 16 out of 18 games to finish out their regular season. During that time, Eastern defeated the Male Bulldogs (State Runner-ups - 7th Region Champs) 6-1, Nelson County (#16) 11-2, and Russell County (12th region champs - #24) 5-3.

Other notable wins during the year included the following: Southern 4-3, Christian Academy 10-4 and 10-0, Holy Cross 11-1, South Laurel 6-4, Franklin County 10-3, Atherton 8-4, J’town 3-2, Waggener 10-0, Seneca 2-0, Manual 17-7, Woodford Co. 3-2, Oldham Co. 7-1, Doss 3-0, and Fern Creek 4-0.

Jordan Shaw and Joe Dailey led the Eagles in hitting, each with a .381 average. Shaw led the team in on base percentage at .549 and in RBI with 31 while Dailey led the team in hits with 45. Brian Anderson had 22 stolen bases to lead the team in that area.

David Slovak and Justin Smith were Eastern’s leading pitchers, both posting 7-3 records. Slovak also had an ERA of 0.33 (3 ER in 63 1/3 innings), which is a team record and ranks in the top five of all time state records in earned run average. At one time, he pitched 19 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run.

2002 Eastern Eagles (26 wins – 9 losses)

*The Eastern Eagles concluded their 2002 season with a spectacular 26-9 record and a final ranking of 13th in the state, which are both all-time school records. Many team and individual records were set throughout the season for first year head coach John Morris and the Eagles.

Eastern started the season on a roll and stood 18-3 after their first 21 games of the season and were included in the state rankings for every week of the season.

After beating Fern Creek in their opener, the Eagles placed second in the Beach Bash Classic in Ft. Walton Beach, FL over spring break out of over 30 teams. Eastern also won two tournaments during the season, including the Woodford County Invitational in Versailles and the Clark County Invitational in Winchester.

Eastern defeated many top 25 opponents during the year. Wins over top 25 clubs included the following: P.L. Dunbar, Trinity, St. X, Clark County, Franklin County, Marion County, Pendleton Co. and Anderson County.

The first major win for Eastern was on the road against P.L. Dunbar as they beat the 9th ranked Bulldogs 4-1 behind the super pitching performance of Brian Halford as he struck out nine in a three-hit performance. The Eagles then came back the next day to defeat Marion County 9-5.

The Eagles later defeated the 4th rated Trinity Shamrocks behind the arm of Halford and Brandon Cunningham by a 5-2 score. Halford tossed three scoreless innings and Cunningham pitched the last four for the win.

Other major wins of the season included a 11-1 win over Central Hardin, a 9-3 victory over Scott County, a 7-5 win over Pendleton County, a 5-1 decision over Seneca, a 4-0 win over Southern, a 6-3 victory over Clark County and a 12-4 decision over Franklin County.

The biggest win of the year for the Eagles was when they shutout the #8 ranked St. X Tigers 3-0 in the first round of the regional tournament behind the excellent pitching of Brian Halford as the U of L signee tossed a three-hitter and struck out 10.

The Eagles then dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Trinity in the regional semi-finals in the last inning as the Shamrocks went on to become the state runner-up.
