BRAVES DOWN N. GEORGIA BARONS 6-4 IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
The Braves traveled to Old Milton High School in Alpharetta this evening for our regular season finale against the North Georgia Barons. The central storylines of the game were the 13 walks issued by our 4-man pitching staff and the 2 defensive errors committed by our infield that enabled 3 unearned runs for the Barons. In short, the game should not have been as close as it was. But, nonetheless, a win is a win, and the goal of this late season outing - an opportunity to get another live workout before the Elite 32 - will hopefully pay dividends in Orlando.
Offensively, the Braves scored 6 runs on 7 hits. After #33 Stephen Wrenn reached first base to lead-off the game on an error by the Barons shortstop, #5 Hunter Swilling stroked a slicing DOUBLE into left field to send Wrenn to third base. Both Wrenn and Swilling then scored on a passed ball and an RBI ground-out by #22 Jon Jon Banks to give the Braves a 2-0 lead. The third inning had a similar feel as #33 Stephen Wrenn reached base again on an infield error by the Barons. Heads-up baserunning by Wrenn enabled him to advance to second base on the same play as the Baron's booted the ball around the infield. #5 Hunter Swilling then drilled an RBI-single to left field and advanced to second base on the throw to homeplate. Swilling then tagged up on a flyball to left field by #10 John Davis and advanced to third base, avoiding the tag with an inside slide. #22 Jon Jon Banks then connected on an RBI-DOUBLE deep into the right field gap to score Swilling. But, the Braves then left the bases loaded to take a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning. #16 Nathaniel Maggio drilled a single up the middle in the fourth inning, but was stranded on second base. Then, with two outs in the fifth inning, #22 Jon Jon Banks cranked the Blast of the Game, a SOLO HOME RUN over the left field wall to increase the score to 5-1. We manufactured a run in the sixth inning when #2 Sam Ayers reached on a lead-off walk and advanced to second and third on a throwing error by the Barons' pitcher and a passed ball by the Barons' catcher. Ayers then scored on an RBI ground-out by #7 Tyler Weyenberg. Our final hit came off the bat of #10 John Davis in the seventh, but an unsuccessful double steal got the Barons out of the inning without further damage.
Defensively, it was a tough night on the hill for the Braves. The Barons' 4 hits combined with our giftwrapped 13 walks and 2 errors theoretically gave the Barons more than enough baserunners to record a win. But, the Braves rose to the occasion defensively to keep all but 4 baserunners from crossing the plate. Our combined pitching stats for the game included allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits and 13 walks with 6 strike outs. The top defensive highlight was a throw-out at the plate by #5 Hunter Swilling at shortstop to catcher #16 Nathaniel Maggio to squash a sixth inning ralley by the Barons. The Braves middle infield also turned 2 double plays.
