BRAVES TAKE SECOND PLACE IN USSSA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Hats off to the 13U East Cobb Astros for being crowned the 2009 USSSA Georgia Major State Champions in the 14U age bracket. It was an all-East Cobb field for today's final matchups, and the Astros confidently worked their way through the EC Titans in the Loser's Bracket semi-final this morning and then the EC Braves in the Championship and "IF" games this afternoon to claim the top hardware.
For the Braves, it was certainly NOT one of our better days. In the first game, we only managed 2 base runners on a walk and an infield error by the Astros. It was the first game this season where we failed to record at least one hit. After imploding to allow 6 runs in the top of the second inning, our defense tightened and only allowed one additional run in the game. But, our fate was sealed at the plate as the Astros recorded 11 ground outs, 8 fly outs, and 2 strike outs through 7 innings to completely shut down our offense.
The second game was far better for the Braves, although the scoreboard did not reflect it. We immediately snapped the hitless streak in our first at-bat as #5 Hunter Swilling recorded a single to left field in the top of the first inning. Two batters later, #10 John Davis added an RBI single to right field to score Swilling. #2 Sam Ayers next added a single of his own to right field, but was stranded as the Astros shut down our first inning attack. In the top of the third inning, #33 Stephen Wrenn punched another single to center field, but we left two runners in scoring position and were unable to capitalize. The fourth inning had a similar feel as #2 Sam Ayers and #19 Ryan Murphy pounded shots to each side of the outfield, but both were also left stranded in scoring position. Then, in the top of the fifth inning, #5 Hunter Swilling recorded the BLAST OF THE GAME with a DOUBLE to the right side gap. #33 Stephen Wrenn then executed a squeeze bunt to score #7 Tyler Weyenberg who had reached ahead of Swilling on a walk, but Swilling was tagged out at the plate as he attempted to also advance on the squeeze. Carrying a 2-2 tie going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Braves then imploded (again) to allow 8 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the game was called via run rule.
Today's two tough losses gives the Braves a second place finish in the USSSA Georgia Major State Championship and three days to prepare for the Perfect Game WWBA 2013 Grads National Championship.
