BRAVES DEFLATE IN 12-4 ELITE WS LOSS TO UTAH HORNS SELECT
Our final pool game in the USSSA Elite 32 World Series was scripted to be a carry-over from yesterday's stellar performance on Field 27 in pool game two. But unfortunately, the move to the big stage of Champion Stadium and the opportunity to use the spring training, home dugout of the Atlanta Braves did not power the kind of game we had planned against the Utah Horns Select. After spotting the visiting Horns 5 runs in top half of the first inning on 3 hits, 4 walks, and 3 defensive errors, the Braves never regained any momentum and fell by the final score of 12-4 in five innings.
Offensively, the majority of the Braves 7 hits were inefficiently strung across our five innings. Three exceptions were #22 Jon Jon Banks RBI-single in the bottom of the third inning with two outs that appeared to spark a Braves ralley. But, we left the bases juiced in the inning and were only able to get 1 run across. Likewise, in the bottom half of the fifth inning, #7 Tyler Weyenberg drilled a 2-RBI single to right field to give some life to the Braves. And 1 out later, #5 Hunter Swilling poked an RBI-single through the 5-6 hole to score Weyenberg. But, those 3 hits were simply not enough to offset our 10 walks and 5 errors issued to the Horns. Our other 4 hits were all singles off the bats of #2 Sam Ayers, #33 Stephen Wrenn (2), and #8 Patrick Schultz.
Defensively, it was simply one of "those days" for the Braves. Our 4-man pitching staff gave up 7 earned runs on 9 hits and 10 walks with 3 strike outs. To be fair, our hurlers had to deal with a non-existent strike zone that seemed to move from the numbers-up to the outside batter's box at will. But, it was also consistently bad for both sides. And, as has been the case so frequently this season, once the defensive errors began to flow ... well, they just seemed to keep on flowing.
With a 1-2 pool record, the Braves now seed into the 6th position in Pool D and begin double-elimination bracket play tomorrow against the San Diego Stars.
