BRAVES SHUT-OUT PONCE CARDENALES 9-0 IN ELITE WS GAME #2
After a light morning workout, the Braves returned to Disney's Wide World of Sports this afternoon for Pool Game Two in the USSSA Elite 32 World Series against the Cardenales from Ponce, Puerto Rico (owners of a 37-3 USSSA record coming into the Elite World Series). In a word, the results were STELLAR as we run-ruled the Cardenales in 5 innings with 9 runs on 8 hits, played FLAWLESS defense, and rode the arm of #21 Brian Kehner who turned in a 1-HIT, COMPLETE GAME, SHUT OUT for his 8th win of the season.
Offensively, #10 John Davis set the tone in the top of first inning for the visiting Braves when he absolutely annihilated a 2-2 count pitch into deep left field. Any normal sized 14U field would not have contained his bomb that went for a DISNEY DOUBLE. Davis then scored after stealing third base and advancing to home on a passed ball to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, the Braves manufactured a run after #16 Nathaniel Maggio led off with a walk. Courtesy Runner #11 CJ Brazil then stole second base, advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by #2 Sam Ayers, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by #33 Stephen Wrenn to give the Braves a 2-0. The Braves then went quietly in the third and fourth innings with only one hit by #10 John Davis, a single to right field. That set up a fireworks show by the Braves in the fifth and final inning as our first 5 batters reached base, including a single through the 5-6 hole by #2 Sam Ayers, a bunt-single between the pitcher and first baseman by #33 Stephen Wrenn, a walk by #19 Ryan Murphy, a 2-RBI line drive single to right field by #7 Tyler Weyenberg, and an RBI-single to shallow centerfield by #21 Brian Kehner. Then, with 1 out in the inning, the Cardenales intentionally walked #10 John Davis to reload the bases. Arguably, their decision to pitch around Davis was a decent strategy given his first inning bomb. However, what they did see coming was #22 Jon Jon Banks who came to the plate behind Davis and BLASTED a bases-clearing, 3-RBI DOUBLE into deep left field. Banks then scored on a hit & run single by #16 Nathaniel Maggio down the left field line to cap a 7-run fifth inning that put the Braves ahead 9-0.
Defensively, #21 Brian Kehner turned in his best performance of the season, carrying a NO-NO into the fifth inning after retiring 14 Cardenales batters in order. He then gave up 1 hit (a bloop double into shallow right field that #2 Sam Ayers nearly caught as he laid out in full stride from his second base position) and 1 walk before retiring the final out for the win. Kehner threw 66 pitches with a 1.54 Strike-to-Ball ratio and recorded 6 strike outs (4 looking & 2 swinging) in the shut out. He also made 3 put-outs at first base, teaming with first baseman #22 Jon Jon Banks on two well-executed 3-1 put-outs, as well as a 3-unassisted put-out on a come-backer to the mound that Kehner ran over to first base himself. The remaining outs came from 4 infield ground outs routinely recorded by #3 Hunter Swilling (SS), #10 John Davis (3B), #16 Nathaniel Maggio (C), and #22 Jon Jon Banks (1B), and 2 outfield flies that were routinely handled #8 Patrick Schultz (LF) and #33 Stephen Wrenn (CF).
The victory gives the Braves a 1-1 pool record going into tomorrow's final pool game against the Utah Horns Select in Champion Stadium.
