BRAVES DEFEAT YOUNG GUNS 5-3 TO ADVANCE TO BRACKETS
It took several innings to get things going, but on the strength of a 4-run inning in the bottom of the fifth, the Braves defeated the Dublin Young Guns 5-3 at Kell High School to claim the top place in our pool, thus advancing into Monday's championship bracket in the USSSA Georgia Super NIT. Scoring 5 runs off of 6 hits showed a marked improvement in our hitting and baserunning over the past 2 days. Nonetheless, we missed two golden opportunities to score more runs as we left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings.
Offensively, we did not see our first hit until the bottom of the third inning as #8 Patrick Schultz connected on a single to the opposite field. Another single was recorded in the bottom of the fourth inning off the bat of #5 Hunter Swilling. But, with a walk and a hit batsman in the inning to load the bases, the Young Guns got out of the inning unscathed on three fly balls hit by the Braves. The fifth inning, however, was quite a different story. A combination of 3 singles hit by the Braves and 2 infield errors committed by the Young Guns' first baseman enabled 4 runs to score. #44 Jordan Brown led off the inning with a hard bouncing single past the third baseman. #11 CJ Brazil followed with another single to shallow centerfield, and #19 Ryan Murphy shot a line-drive 1-RBI single into centerfield. In between those hits, #5 Hunter Swilling reached on a sky-high pop-up that was misplayed in the bright sky by the Young Guns' first baseman, and #1 Nick Sexton followed with a grounder down the first base line that the Young Guns' first baseman also misplayed. Sexton's grounder enabled 2 runs to score and opened the flood gates as the Young Guns pitcher and catcher began to struggle. With a 4-2 lead going into the sixth inning, we added an insurance run on another errant throw to second base by the Young Guns' catcher as #12 Will Schnure scored from third base. #44 Jordan Brown also stroked a second single in the inning, but we once again left the bases loaded as the Young Guns overted a rout.
Defensively, #21 Brian Kehner was called upon late to make the start in place of #33 Stephen Wrenn. Kehner pitched 2-2/3 innings and gave up 1 earned run on 2 hits and 3 walks with 3 strike outs. #11 CJ Brazil relieved Kehner in the third inning, pitched 2-1/3 innings, and gave up 0 runs on 1 hit with 0 walks and 2 strike outs. #1 Nick Sexton closed the final 2 innings, giving up 0 earned runs on 1 hit and 1 walk with 2 strike outs. Our defense played exceptionally well behind the 3-man pitching staff, committing 0 errors and making the routine plays look routine. One particularly stellar play involved a 5-2 put-out manufactured by #19 Ryan Murphy who fielded a hot hit on the left side of the infield and threw out a baserunner at the plate. Catcher #12 Will Schnure provided the bullet proof wall down the third base line that proved to inpenetrable, even by a Young Gun.
The win enabled the Braves to win our Super NIT pool and advance into Monday's championship bracket as the #5 seed overall.
