BRAVES WASTE STRONG OFFENSIVE OUTING VIA POOR DEFENSIVE PLAY
This evening, the Braves traveled to Pope High School, home of the 2009 Georgia 5A High School Baseball Champions, for our second pool game in the USSSA Georgia Major State Championship against the East Cobb Titans. What transpired was perhaps the strangest game the Braves have played this season. Mixing flashes of offensive brilliance with flashes of defensive dullness, we used our sticks and legs to outhit the Titans 16-12 on offense, and then we used our gloves and arms to commit a season-high eight defensive errors to hand the Titans 10 unearned runs. The net result was a stinging 12-9 loss, and blaming it on the new uniform combination would simply be too easy.

Offensively, #33 Stephen Wrenn led the way with a 4 for 4 effort that included a TRIPLE, DOUBLE, and 2 singles. #7 Tyler Weyenberg was right behind Wrenn with a 3 for 3 effort that included 3 well-stroked singles. Additional DOUBLES were recorded by #12 Will Schnure and #22 Jon Jon Banks, and the remainder of our hits were all singles off the bats of #2 Sam Ayers (2), #8 Patrick Schultz (2), #10 John Davis, #16 Nathaniel Maggio, and #12 Will Schnure.

Defensively, #22 Jon Jon Banks got his second start of the season and pitched well through three innings, giving up 0 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk with 1 strike out. Banks was relieved by #10 John Davis who completed the final 2-1/3 innings before time expired. Davis gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 1 walk with 1 strike out. Unfortunately, our 2-man pitching staff performed well enough for the Braves to earn the "W", especially considering the run support they received from their offense. But, the aforementioned eight defensive errors sealed the game for the Titans who benefitted mightily from the 10 unearned runs gifted to them by the Braves.

Put simply, it was a tale of two teams ... an offense that is beginning to fire on nearly all cylinders and a defense that simply tanked for a 2 hour period.
