Eagle Swim Team: Coaching Staff

Coach Ward is well respected in the swimming community and has developed a national reputation of developing elite national and international level swimmers. In addition to being the developmental coach for 2000 Olympic gold medal winner Tommy Hannan, highlights of Coach Ward's coaching resume include coaching 4 different Maryland State record-holders, developing 13 US National qualifiers, 4 US Olympic Trial qualifiers, coaching five swimmers to world rankings, placing one athlete on the 1999 Pan American team, coaching 2 USA Junior champion record holders and one National Junior Team member. Additionally, Coach Ward's has coached four different swimmers to over 20 individual Top-100 swims on United States Swimming list of All-Time performances.
Under Coach Ward's direction, Eagle Swim Team has experienced tremendous gains in the past several years and is quickly becoming one of the most recognized club teams in the nation. For the past three years EST has been awarded Bronze and Silver Medal (twice) by United States Swimming Club Excellence program – one of only three Maryland clubs to be so recognized. Most recently, EST added more hardware to its championship cabinet with the men winning the Speedo Southern Sectional Championships in spring of 2006.
Coach Ward also serves as the head coach for the McDonogh School's outstanding men's and women's varsity swim teams. At McDonogh, Coach Ward prides himself on developing the whole person – besides developing 20 different high school All-Americans, his teams have consistently been recognized in the classroom earning over a 3.6 GPA each year. Impressively under Coach Ward's guidance, the nationally-ranked women's team is 5-time defending Independent Schools of Maryland swimming champions, and owns an active undefeated streak of over 50 meets that stretches back over 6 seasons.
Additionally, Coach Ward also serves on the Maryland Swimming Board of Directors as the Senior Vice Chair and has been selected as a Maryland Zone Team coach 6 times. He is a graduate of UMBC, where he was a school record holder and 4-year letter winner in swimming for the Retrievers.

Associate Head Coach/Senior Performance Coach: Jeff Taegel Jeff Taegel is a certified ASCA Level 3 Swim Coach who enters his 8th year with the Eagle Swim Team. Coach Jeff has previously served as the Head Age coach and the lead coach of
Level 3; however this year he will be heading up the team's Senior Performance program.
With Coach Jeff's guidance the EST age group program has developed a core philosophy of teaching young swimmers to essential 'swimming' elements of the sport and important life skills such as goal setting and developing self-discipline. Accordingly, since 2000 membership of the age group program has increased 200 percent, achieved 97 percent
retention rate, and has flourished to become one of the premier age group programs in the country. Additionally, as lead coach of Level 3, the top group in the EST age group program, Coach Jeff's swimmers have earned over 20 individual Maryland State Championships, have broken five Maryland State Records, and recorded 20 National Age Group
Top-16 including an impressive five 1st place rankings, and most notably, 12 individual rankings on USA Swimming's list of Top-100 All-Time performances.
Coach Jeff holds a B.A. in Psychology from UMBC, where he was a 2-year letter winner for the Retrievers in swimming. He also attended Indian River Community College in Florida, where he was named Captain of the men's swimming team and contributed to IRCC's unprecedented run of 25 consecutive national junior college championships. coaching with the Eagle Swim Team, Coach Jeff is also an Upper School Health & Fitness teacher at McDonogh, is an assistant coach with the nationally-ranked McDonogh Girls varsity Swim Team, and the head coach of the school's varsity Water Polo Team. Head Age Group Coach/Gold Coach: Sean Marshall, was previously employed by the Nashville Aquatic Club in Nashville, Tennessee as the Senior Assistant Coach where he worked alongside Head Coach John Morse. Coach Marshall is an ASCA Level 3 certified coach. He enters his 3rd year on Eagle with a wide range of experience including coaching all levels from lessons to senior coaching and from assistant coaching to a particularly successful stint as an interim head coach.
Coach Marshall began his professional coaching career as the Head Age Group Coach of the City of Mobile Swim Association in Mobile, Alabama. At the conclusion of his first year as a full-time professional coach, he was honored as the Southeastern Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year. In his last Long Course Season with CMSA Coach Marshall was the Interim Head Coach for CMSA, taking control of the entire program and coaching both the senior and age groups to a strong finish at their Southeastern Championship Meet. The next season he accepted the Senior Assistant Coach position at NAC.
At CMSA, NAC, and EST Coach Marshall has coached and worked with Olympic Trial Qualifiers, National and Junior National Qualifiers, Top 16 or Top 10 in the Nation swims, Maryland & Southeastern Champion swims, and Age Group Champions. In 2005 and 2006 Coach Marshall was selected as a member of the Southeastern Swimming Zone All-Star Coaching Staff.

Lead Silver and Bronze Group Coach: Coach Matthew McDonough was previously the Head Coach with the Tigerfish Aquatic Club and an Assistant Coach with Towson University Swimming. Under the tutelage of Coach Pat Mead, Matt was able to work with swimmers at various points in their swimming careers from the developmental to national caliber.
An ASCA Level 2 coach, Matt is entering into his first year with Eagles Swim Team. Matt’s age group competitive career was with the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. While attending Towson University, he competed for four years on the men’s swimming and diving team. Upon graduation he began coaching with both of Towson’s swimming teams, focusing mostly with the distance swimmers. At the same time Matt was coaching with Tigerfish; beginning with their younger age groups, eventually becoming the head coach. He designed all swimming and dry-land workouts for the top age group and master swimmers thru 2008.
Graduating from Towson University with a degree in Business Administration with a Management concentration, Matt plans on pursuing a Masters degree in Business. Matt draws his coaching style from his various backgrounds in summer league, age group and collegiate swimming. Eagle Masters Swim Coach : David Amato enters his 3rd season with Eagle Swim Team. David coaches the Masters group. He will contribute to the program as a “special assignment coach” with a strong focus on working with the swimmers on an individual basis for technique. The masters group comprises fitness swimmers, triathletes and competitive masters swimmers. Beyond the pool, David trains endurance sports athletes including triathletes, cyclists and motorcycle racers. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a professional personal trainer. He holds a B.A. from UMBC where he was assistant swimming coach with the college and club teams. David was also assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh and was head coach of Team Pittsburgh. A 4-year letter winner at West Virginia University, David began college swimming as a hungry walk-on and progressed to a full scholarship athlete, school record holder, individual conference champion and team captain. David is very excited to work alongside the Eagle coaches. The team culture here at Eagle is very inspirational. EST Assistant Coach: Matt Goode is a certified ASCA Level 3 Swim Coach with over fifteen years worth of experience ranging from college to masters while focusing primarily on age group swimming. Over the
years, Coach Matt's swimmers have broken many team records and have won individual Maryland State Championships and Eastern Zone Championships. Additionally, Coach Matt has coached 12 different
swimmers to 30 individual Top-16 swims; 3 of those swimmers rank on USA Swimming's list of Top-100 All-Time performances.
Coach Matt Goode was a standout student-athlete at Towson University and was captain of the men's swim team and president of the Student-Athlete Council. Coach Matt also holds masters degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics. Last year he was the recipient of the Best Buy Te@ch Award as an outstanding technology educator. He is currently the Coordinator of Technology and a 7th grade social studies teacher at McDonogh, and also coaches the Middle School's Water Polo and Swimming Teams. Mini 2 Coach Le Pettipaw (Tuesday & Thursday): in an ASCA Certified Level 2 coach with 4 years coaching experience at Columbia Aquatics in Columbia, MD. She has worked with 8-11 year olds and also with 8 & Unders working on basic stroke techniques. Le is an excellent role model for these children and prepares them for more competitive upper level groups. She was a competitive crew member in high school and college then turned to swimming. Le holds two Association of Arts degrees in Art and Art Education. Le has three lovely children and plans on returning to school in the future. EST Assistant Bronze Group Coach: Kim Morris is in her second year at Eagles Swim Team as an assistant coach with the Bronze developmental swimmers. She also is an assistant swim coach in the Central Maryland Summer League at Forest Hill Swim and Tennis Club where she has been involved in swimming as athlete, coach, and parent since the 1960’s.
Coach Kim is a physical education and health teacher with a B.S. in Psychology from Towson University. She was a collegiate competitor in both swimming and diving, placing as an All American in National Junior College Championships and competing for James Madison University. She continues to swim with US Master’s and believes that swimming is a lifelong sport that everyone can learn and achieve personal goals with in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is her goal to assist in carrying on the EST character philosophy and swimming principles that led her to become a coach under this program.
