GRAIN VALLEY 13, RICHMOND 7: Ryan Skinner and Austin Gouldsmith provided the big hits to help the Eagles advance to Wednesday’s Class 3 District 14 title game. Gouldsmith tripled twice and drove in four runs, while Skinner belted a three-run homer in a four-run third inning as the Eagles beat Richmond in the semifinals at Oak Grove’s Webb Park.

The Eagles (16-5) will play Odessa at 5 p.m. Wednesday for the district title.
“It wasn’t the sharpest played game,” Eagles coach Mark Lyford said. “We did enough to survive, move on and get a chance to play for a district title, which is what we wanted. So we’re excited about that.” Shay Parra added three hits, while David Richards – who got the win on the mound – had two hits and two RBIs.

Grain Valley eliminates Van Horn in district

Oddo sparks Eagles baseball team into semifinals

Oak Grove, MO —

Sophomore Jordan Oddo was too much for Van Horn. He allowed only three hits, struck out 10 and walked none in pitching Grain Valley to an 11-2 first-round victory in the Class 3 District 14 tournament at Oak Grove's Webb Park Saturday.

“Oddo came out and did a good job,” Grain Valley coach Mark Lyford said. “He threw strikes and we played pretty good defense and scored in almost every inning. It was good to get that first district win.” Grain Valley (15-5) supported Oddo with an 11-hit attack. David Richards singled twice and hit a two-run homer, Jake Talamonte singled and hit a solo homer and Shay Parra singled twice with three RBIs.

Aaron Driskell suffered the loss as Van Horn finished a successful 12-3 season. He also singled twice. “It was a pretty good season,” Van Horn coach Tim Wilson said. “We got a lot better as the season went on. We had a really young, young team. We battled some adversity and won a tournament (at Center). We did some things Van Horn had not done in awhile. The future looks pretty good.”

GRAIN VALLEY 6, EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 5:

George Cruz’s RBI single capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh in a Missouri River Valley Conference West home win.

David Richards (3-0) threw a complete game for the win, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out six. Shay Parra and Ryan Skinner each had two hits, Austin Gouldsmith tripled and David Duncan doubled for the Eagles (13-3, 6-1 MRVC West).

GRAIN VALLEY WINS TWO (Examiner): David Richards shook off a tough game and helped Grain Valley close the Boonville Wood Bat Classic with a pair of wins Saturday.
Richards homered in both games - giving him four for the week and seven for the season - as the Eagles (11-3) beat host Boonville 8-3 and Centralia 11-1.

“We were disappointed about (losing) Friday,” Eagles coach Mark Lyford said. “We had chances to win. We came back against Boonville, who was playing pretty well. That was a solid win. We swung the bats really well all day. Friday, we had a lot of missed opportunities. Saturday, we capitalized on most of our opportunities.”

Austin Gouldsmith had five hits and three RBIs on the day. Jordan Oddo had a pair of hits against Boonville, while David Duncan added two hits and three RBIs against Centralia.

Bosserman Throws No-Hitter vs Oak Grove in Home Win 10 - 0! (Examiner click here!)

Grain Valley, MO —

David Richards was good at the plate for Grain Valley Friday.  But teammate Payton Bosserman was better on the mound.  Bosserman threw a no-hitter, walking two and striking out seven in a 10-0 win over visiting Oak Grove in a Missouri River Valley Conference West home game. Richards was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run. Austin Gouldsmith and Ryan Skinner each had two hits for the Eagles (7-2, 2-1 MRVC West).

“Obviously (Bosserman) threw well today,” Eagles coach Mark Lyford said. “The biggest thing for him is he’s focusing on trusting his stuff. We continue to try to tell him to pound the strike zone. He did that early in the game. He trusts them more and is making an effort to cut down on the (walks).”

Jacob Horn took the loss for Oak Grove (1-10, 0-3 MRVC West).  “Grain Valley played an excellent game, and Bosserman threw a gem today,” Panthers coach Kirk Sears said. “Hopefully we are able to take a look at Coach Lyford’s club and learn some things about ourselves and the game of baseball.”

“I thought we had good at-bats,” Eagles coach Mark Lyford said. “We maybe didn’t get on base with some, but they were productive and got deep in the count. We took advantage of some opportunities.”

Austin Gouldsmith led the Eagles with two hits and five RBIs. Derek Kelton, David Duncan and Shay Parra each had two hits.

Payton Bosserman picked up the win for the Eagles (5-1, 1-0 MRVC West), throwing all five innings.

Thank You Parents!

neweagle

It was a good day at the ol' ballpark on Saturday afternoon as parents donated their time for the good of the baseball program.  Players, parents and coaches worked together to make the baseball facility much improved for the season's action.  Those involved were able to put up a brand new windscreen, edge the basepaths and repair and prepare the bullpen mounds among other things.

The parents are looking to continue the tradition in assisting the baseball program by maintaining the baseball booster club.  Mr. Kelton among others will be working to keep this club going which has helped to finince various projects over the years.  (new dugouts, the concession building, the original windscreen, charter busses to the state tournament in '03 & '04, etc.) Parental support and enthusiasm is needed however to make this endeavor work and ultimately benefit the players.

We have a great baseball program at GVHS which helps to build positive relationships, positive character and excellent experiences.

Thanks again for the help!

An Excellent Day For Campers At GVHS

eagle_soaring.jpg

Over 80 3rd-5th grade boys made their way to the campus of Grain Valley High School for the baseball program's annual baseball clinic.  Good times were had by all as players learned new techniques in hitting, pitching, infield skills, and outfield skills.  There were races and a throwing competition at the end of the camp.

It is expected that if the camp expands in the coming years, two sessions will need to be held.  Thank you to all the campers and their parents for participating.  Smiles were had all around on a beautiful day for baseball.

Eagles Set Record In Try-outs!

Eagleshardball

The Grain Valley Eagles baseball team had a record high 60 young men try out for the team this season.  The coaching staff was impressed with the turn-out as the crop had many talented young players.  The unfortunate thing about the first week was some good arms had to be turned away; never a fun time for these players or the coaches making the decisions. The staff would like to thank all the kids for coming out and offer congratulations to those who have made the team thus far.

Hard work and dedication to the program will contribute to a winning team in 2009.
