Denbigh Youth Baseball League: History
Saturday, February 2League History
Denbigh Youth Baseball League began in 1967. It grew to a maximum of 97 teams in 1995. Girls fastpitch softball was added in 1991.
The League operates in conjunction with the City of Newport News Parks and Recreation Dept. The City provides the playing fields, which are located at school sites. The City prepares the fields before each season begins and maintains the fields during the season - each weekday and occasionally on Saturday when games are scheduled. Maintenance includes dragging the infield surface, except when the infield is grass, and putting down the lines that mark the foul lines, the batter's box, the coaches' boxes, and the on-deck circles. This assistance is invaluable to the League in view of the number of playing sites and the distance between sites. Without this help, the League would have to hire a crew to perform this maintenance function.
Only one other league in Newport News receives this assistance - Anderson Park Youth Baseball League, located in the southern part of the City. All others have to perform this function themselves or pay someone to do it.
