Saturday, June 13
Hurricanes return to action in Charlotte, NC
The Canes travelled to UNC-Charlotte Team Camp and finished 3-0 against some tough high school competition. The first game against Stuart Cramer was close throughout, but the Canes pulled away at the end for a 37-30 win. Game 2 was the feature game in the main gym against Spartanburg Varsity. After trailing 2-3 to start the game, the Hurricanes pulled ahead using strong, team defense to finish with a 39-36 victory. The final game was anchored by good ball movement and shooting against West Mecklenberg Varsity. The Canes shared the basketball inside and out as they finished the day with a 46-37 win.

Canes finish 1st at the Carolina Stars Invitational
Following the Memorial Day Holiday, the Hurricanes travelled to High Point, NC to begin their tune-up for their June camp season. The Canes opened with their first 2 games against the host organization, Lady Stars, with tough matchups. The Canes were sharp in both games offensively and defensively and finished victorious, 46-30 and 60-21, respectively. There was a balanced inside and outside scoring attack. The 3rd and final game was against the Renegades out of Virginia. The Canes used strong inside play to finish off the championship weekend with a 52-36 win. Funderburk was named tournament MVP for her outstanding play and contribution to the Hurricanes.

Sunday, May 3
Hurricanes capture the 2015 “Chase the Dream” Classic championship!

The Canes travelled to Winston-Salem, NC for the 2nd annual “Chase the Dream” Classic basketball tournament hosted by BOND Events.  The tournament’s objective is to encourage youth to understand “Anything is Possible” when you outwork and continue to chase your dream! The tournament also advertised DII/DIII/JUCO showcase opportunities.


During Saturday’s pool play, the Canes faced 2 tough 17U opponents, Roanoke Terriers and Carolina Reign Elite.  With strong teamwork and hustle, the Canes prevailed and put themselves in position to play for the championship on Sunday against Carolina Allstars. On Sunday, the Canes were short-handed, but once again played tough defense to secure the championship with a 3-0 record for the weekend.

Hurricanes finish the Deep South Classic with a 3-1 record

For the fourth season, the Hurricanes suffered a single loss during the Deep South Tournament in Raleigh, NC, April 24-25, 2015.  The Canes participated in the approximately 400 team tournament and was a member of the 17U Signature B bracket. This tournament marks for the 1st viewing period of the recruiting season for NCAA Coaches.


The Canes opened the weekend against a tough Scarborough Blues team out of Ontario, Canada.  It was a strong performance by both teams with the Canes outlasting the Blues for the victory.  Later that afternoon, the Canes faced Dayton Metro out of Ohio and turned in another strong performance to end Day #1 with 2 wins and no losses.  During Saturday’s game, however, the Hurricanes suffered their first loss with a lackluster performance against Bay State Magic. On Sunday, the Hurricanes regrouped and played a close game with Mt. Elite out of Massachusetts, securing the victory by a single point in the final 15 seconds of the game.

Sunday, April 19
Hurricanes open season with a strong performance at the USJN South Qualifier!

The Durham Hurricanes 17U opened their 2015 summer season at the USJN South Qualifier in Atlanta, GA. A total of 16 teams (17 & under) competed for the title. The Canes finished the weekend 4-1 capturing 2nd place. During Saturday's Pool C play, the Canes faced 3 tough opponents; 2 from GA and 1 from SC and went 3-0 to secure 1st place in their pool. This earned them a spot in the semifinals on Sunday to face the winner of Pool B. In Sunday's semifinal game, the Canes played great defense in the 2nd half to erase a 9-point halftime deficit to win the game. However, the Canes were not as fortunate in the championship game. The Canes suffered their first loss of the season against the Pool A winner. Congratulations to Zaria Rogers who was selected to the Pool C All-Star team! 

Thursday, July 31
Canes win USJN Premier Invitational, place 2nd in USJN National Championship, and other tournament updates!

July 25-28, USJN National Championship, Washington, DC 

The Hurricanes finished the tournament with an overall record of 5-2. The Canes won the pool and moved on to win in the semifinals by 20+ points. In the national championship game, the Canes were up by 6 points with 2:56 remaining. Unfortuntely, fouls, turnovers, and a missed free throw kept the team from taking the victory. The final score was 45-47. Well done Hurricanes! 

July 6-8, USJN Premier Invitational Tournament, Richmond, VA

The Canes finished second in pool play but came back to win the tournament championship! The team finished with a 4-2 record. Rogers and Wilson were named to the Pool Allstar Team. Congratulations!!


June 13-15, BWSL Elite 64, Hampton, VA

This was a tough weekend for the Canes, finishing with a record of 1-3.


June-July,Team Camps at Wake Forest University, Mars Hill University, and East Carolina University.

The Hurricanes made a great showing with a team camp record of 9-1.

Durham Hurricanes dominate May Hoopfest in Winston-Salem, NC

The Durham Hurricanes went 3-0 at this one day tournament sponsored by Bond Events on Saturday, May 31, 2014. The Canes played in the varsity division, facing teams made up of mostly juniors and seniors. Our team of sophomores took care of business and finished in first place. The Canes defeated the Northern Stars, the Lady Panthers, and the Charlotte Mystics.

Durham Hurricanes go 3-1 at Deep South Classic

The Durham Hurricanes 10th grade girls competed well at the Deep South Classic Showcase Tournament in Raleigh, NC, April 25-27, 2014. 

From the Deep South Classic website: 

The seventeenth annual Deep South Classic will be presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance in April. The three-day event will be hosted at the Raleigh Convention Center that willf eature 18 courts from Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, 2014.

The Deep South Classic brings together many of the nation's elite prep athletes during the only live recruiting period allowed by the NCAA. In past years, prep superstars such as Courtney Paris, Alana Beard, Erlana Larkins, Candace Parker, Noelle Quinn and Tiffany Jackson have played in the event.

The 2014 event will include the following divisions: 17 National, 17 Signature, 16 National, 16 Signature, 15 National, 15 Signature, 14 National, 14 Signature, 13 National and 12 National . Each age group will include the top travel teams from across the country, featuring the top players. Considerable attention will be focused on the prospects in the Classes of 2014 through 2020. The Deep South Classic also provides college coaches with a tremendous opportunity to scout the up-and-coming youngsters. A series of elite players made their first mark on the national scene at past Deep South Classics, and more will gain fame this spring. 

The Hurricanes competed in the 15 and under Signature Division. Results are as follows:

(W) 54-44 against Team Pride Black, TN

(W) 69-39 against Tri-County Crusaders, GA

(L) 54-57 against NC Spartans, NC

(W) 39-29 against Ohio Express, OH

Durham Hurricanes go 3-1 at US Junior Nationals Qualifier in Atlanta, GA

The Durham Hurricanes took another trip to Georgia this weekend to play in the USJN Qualifier South. The US Junior Nationals is known as one of the premier competition event organizations in the United States. US Junior Nationals primary mission is to help travel teams/players to receive college exposure and the opportunity to compete in front of scouts of all levels.

Our Durham Hurricanes-15 beat the Georgia Metros-15 by a score of 49-48 in the first round of pool play. In the second round, the team took down the SCLW-16 (SC) 69-34. The Canes closed out pool play with a 3-0 record, defeating Queens of Charleston-15 (SC) 61-41. 

The Canes met the Playmakers-17 (GA) in the championship game. The team led most of the game but was unable to pull out a win losing the championship by one point. Although we missed out on a tournament championship, overall it was a fine showing for the Durham Hurricanes. As a result of finishing first place in pool play, the Canes were awarded $650 towards participation in a future tournament. This is an excellent accomplishment for our team. 

The team will take Easter weekend off from tournament play and return to the court at the Deep South Classic in Raleigh, NC, Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27.



Sunday, March 30
Canes win season opening tournament!

The Durham Hurricanes 10th grade girls basketball team started the season off with a bang! The team traveled to Suwanee (Atlanta area), GA to play in the Peach State Basketball Spring Showdown. The Peach State Basketball Spring Showdown is designed for the region's top travel programs to kick of the spring/summer travel season and give players an opportunity to be evaluated by the JumpOffPlus.com and qualify to receive invitations to the Elite Basketball Academy Camp Series.

Play began for the Hurricanes on Saturday morning. The team defeated Showtime, 42-41 in the first round of bracket play. Then, the Canes took down the Winston-Salem Stealers, 44-28, in the second round. As a result, the team moved into the championship game. After a 13 point deficit at the half, the Canes rallied to defeat a solid Central Florida Elite, 51-46. Congratulations!

Saturday, July 13
Hurricanes finish strong at AAU Nationals!

The Canes went 2-1 during pool play defeating the Alabama Twisters and the Arkansas Mavericks (by forfeit). The team lost a tough game to the Miami Suns.

The Hurricanes entered championship bracket play as a #2 seed and lost a close game to the 76ers Elite (NC) in the opening round. 

The Canes were forced to regroup and set their sights on a tenth place finish. This goal was accomplished as the team swept their consolation bracket beating the Cincy Swish, Georgia Lady Defenders, and the South Carolina 76ers Red.

The top ten finish was the best result our team has earned at AAU Nationals. The Hurricanes finished the tournament with a 5-2 record and a 10th place trophy. We hope for an even better finish next year. Way to go Canes!

Monday, July 8
Canes go 3-1 in AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, FL
The Durham Hurricanes arrived in Orlando, FL and won all three pool play games in the 9th grade AAU Super Showcase. The team defeated the Blue Star Florida Elite, Baltimore Lady Panthers, and Team SOL. The Canes moved into the gold bracket for championship play. Unfortunately, the team was paired against the #1 ranked 9th grade team in the nation, losing to the Georgia Pistols Elite. Despite the loss, finishing in the top bracket was still a great accomplishment and prepared the team for AAU Nationals beginning the following day.

Tuesday, June 25
Team Camp at Wake Forest University

The Durham Hurricanes spent the day at Wake Forest University women's basketball team camp on Saturday, June 22. The team defeated the Charlotte Lady Warriors and the Salisbury Stingz. The team lost to a tough 10th grade Boo Williams Summer League team from Hampton, Virginia. 

The Canes will travel to Orlando, Florida to play in the AAU 9th grade Super Showcase and the AAU 9th grade National Championship in early July. Good luck Canes!

Hurricanes win Josh Howard/Porsche Jones Classic
The Durham Hurricanes traveled to Winston-Salem, NC for a one day tournament. The Canes went 4-0 on the day. The photo below shows the team with the tournament trophy as well as the NC AAU State Championship medals and plaque. Congratulations Canes! Next stop, AAU Nationals!

Durham Hurricanes win 2013 9th grade Girls NC AAU State Championship!

After traveling to Greensboro for the state tournament April 26-28, and enduring a power outage and the cancellation of the championship game, the Durham Hurricanes finally earned what they have been working so hard for. In the rescheduled match up, the Canes beat the Garner Flames to capture the NC Girls 9th grade AAU State Championship. Congratulations Canes! Next stop: AAU Nationals!!

Sunday, May 5
Durham Hurricanes win BWSL Super Regional

This past weekend, the Durham Hurricanes traveled to Hampton, VA to compete in the Boo Williams Summer League Super Regional Tournament. Pool play began on Friday night with a win over the Red Tide. On Saturday, the Canes beat the Norfolk Express and the Black Widows, earning the number one seed for bracket play. On Sunday morning, the team earned its second win over the Red Tide and faced the Norfolk Express for the tournament championship. It was a hard-fought game and the Durham Hurricanes pulled out an exciting win in overtime.

Sunday, April 28
Durham Hurricanes to play in 9th grade AAU State Championship

The Durham Hurricanes 9th grade girls traveled to Greensboro for the AAU State Tournament on Friday, April 26. Friday night, they defeated CBC McFadden. On Saturday, the team took down the NC Spartans. On Sunday morning, the Canes overpowered the Capital City Cyclones. As the team prepared to take on the Garner Flames for the 9th grade AAU State Championship, Mother Nature intervened. A storm caused the Greensboro Sportsplex to lose power and cancel the rest of the day's games. The state championship would have to be rescheduled.

The Durham Hurricanes will face the Garner Flames for the state championship on Saturday, June 1 at West Cary Middle School. Time TBD.

Monday, April 22
Hurricanes go 3-1 at Deep South Showcase Tournament

After a bumpy start and losing to the Cincy Swish in the opening round, the 9th grade Durham Hurricanes went on to sweep the next three games beating the X-Citement Future, Baltimore Lady Panthers, and NC Spartans.

272 teams from across the nation in age groups ranging from 13U-17U competed in this showcase event held at the Convention Center in Raleigh, NC. Our team competed in the 14U Signature A bracket and finished 3-1 on the weekend.

Congratulations Canes on showcasing your skills at this premiere girls basketball event!

The team heads to Greensboro this weekend for the AAU State Tournament. The Canes have some unfinished business to take care of after finishing as state runner-up last season. Good luck Hurricanes!!

Durham Hurricanes win fourth consecutive NC AAU East Regional State Qualifier

The 9th grade Durham Hurricanes opened the season with a 4-0 start. The Canes beat the Capital City Cyclones, Express Showcase, Garner Flames, and Lake Norman Magic to win the NC AAU East Regional Qualifier. This is the fourth consecutive year the Hurricanes have captured the AAU East Regional, winning as 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. The regional victory earns the Hurricanes the number one seed in the East for the NC AAU State Tournament scheduled for April 26-28 in Greensboro, NC. Congratulations on a great performance!

Monday, September 17
Hurricanes start 2012-2013 season with Community Service Event
The Durham Hurricanes 9th grade girls spent Saturday morning September 15 working a rest stop in Carrboro, NC for the Ride Without Limits, a charity cycling event benefiting United Cerebral Palsy. The team set up the rest stop and provided riders with food, drink, and motivation. Riders rode a 34, 64, or 100 mile route touring the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.


Sunday, June 24
Hurricanes win 5th annual Win or Go Home Tournament in High Point, NC

This past weekend, the Hurricanes played up into the JV division in the one-day Win or Go Home Tournament. The Canes won all four games to take the championship. The team defeated the Salisbury Stingz, the Raleigh Roadrunners, the Carolina Lady All-Stars, and the Lady Diamonds. Taking the championship was quite an accomplishment as our team of rising 8th and 9th graders faced players in grades 9-12. The Hurricanes will finish the season in Orlando, FL for the 8th grade AAU Nationals July 3-8. Good luck Canes!

Durham Hurricanes win UASBA Girls National Championship 2012
This past weekend, the Durham Hurricanes played up into the 9th grade division of the United All-Star Basketball Association National Championship in Danville, VA. The team went 4-1 for the weekend. We beat the Danville Heat and lost to the Extreme Showcase on Saturday. The Hurricanes swept all three games on Sunday, beating the RDU Triple Threat, the Lady Blazers, and defeating the Extreme Showcase for the championship. Congratulations Canes!!

Hurricanes win Super Regional in Augusta, GA

The Durham Hurricanes girls went 5-0 this past weekend to sweep the AAU Super Regional in Augusta, GA. The team dominated the division winning all games by double digits. Way to go Canes!

The Hurricanes will take this coming week off for the Memorial Day holiday and return to tournament action in June.

The Canes will be hosting their 2nd annual Nationals Tune-up Tournament on Saturday, June 9 in Chapel Hill, NC. We need 8th and 9th grade girls' teams for this one-day tournament. Please contact coach Danyel for more information or to register.

Monday, May 7
Hurricanes lose at the buzzer in 8th grade NC AAU State Championship
As East Regional champions, the Durham Hurricanes earned a number one seed and a first-round bye in the AAU state tournament in Asheville, NC this past weekend. The Hurricanes defeated the Charlotte Lady Warriors and the Charlotte Lady Royals to move into the championship game. The final against the NC Spartans was a close game throughout but the Hurricanes managed to take a one-point lead with 3.4 seconds to go. Unfortunately, the Spartans hit a long shot at the buzzer to win it. Congratulations to the Canes for their 2nd place finish in the state and for their effort throughout the state tournament. We are proud of you!

Canes finish second at Deep South Classic!

The Durham Hurricanes had an excellent showing at this weekend's Deep South Classic in Raleigh, NC. The team went 3-1 and finished 2nd of 16 teams in the 13U division.

Canes win third consecutive NC AAU East Regional Championship!
The Canes went 5-0 this weekend in their NC East Regional Championship win. Congratulations!! The team will take some time off for the Easter holiday and then will get back to work to prepare for the Deep South tournament in Raleigh on April 20-22.

Based on 2011 play, the team has earned a spot in the AAU 2012 national rankings! This places the Canes as one of the top teams in the nation.

Hurricanes play in their first tournament of the season
The Durham Hurricanes traveled to Greenville, SC this past weekend to compete in the AAU Super Regional. The Canes faced tough competition in teams from Tennessee and South Carolina. It was a successful weekend, despite not winning the tournament. The team will compete this coming weekend in the NC East Regional in the Raleigh, NC area. The Durham Hurricanes will defend their two-time East Regional championship!

2011 Season Results

Our 2011 season record was 31-8. We won the AAU NC Eastern Regional, placed 7th in the AAU NC States, and in the top 25 at AAU Nationals. We played in two Super Regionals, placing 3rd and 1st. We also won the YBOA Battle at the Beach in Wilmington, NC and our own Nationals Tune-up Tournament in Raleigh, NC.

Sunday Workouts
Coach Rob Sinclair is offering weekly workouts on Sundays. These are a good opportunity to work on your skills before the season starts. A typical two hour workout includes conditioning, shooting, ball handling, passing, and scrimmaging. For more information, contact Coach Danyel

Six players were able to attend the November gathering at Golden Corral. The girls had dinner and exchanged names for a gift exchange. We will meet at the mall and exchange gifts in early December. Future events may include attending a women's college game and volunteering in the local community.

The middle school basketball season begins this month. Good luck at tryouts Hurricanes!

Parent Meeting
Parents met to discuss the Durham Middle School Showcase Tournament scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 at Chewning Middle School. We also discussed the practice and game schedule, the budget and initiation fee, new player evaluation, community service, and fundraising for the 2012 season.

2012 Durham Middle School Basketball Showcase

The Durham Hurricanes girls represented well at the 2012 Durham Middle School Basketball Showcase at Chewning Middle School on Saturday, Feb. 18. Two of our players participated in the event, with one bringing home the Sportmanship Award trophy. The team was present to show support for their Durham teammates and also held a raffle to raise funds for the season.


Practice begins this week and the players are excited for another great season. Go Canes!

Community Service at the North Carolina Food Bank

Thirteen players, three coaches, and a number of parents turned out to volunteer at the North Carolina Food Bank in Raleigh on Saturday, March 17. The team worked for 3 hours sorting and packaging over 12,500 pounds of non-perishable foods. It was a great team building experience as well as an opportunity to give back to our community. Keep up the good work Canes!
