May 2009: A Letter from the USRowing President Water Droplets

Dear Members,

Your Board of Directors met in April to continue on the path laid out with our new bylaws. Building on the work of previous meetings, Patrick Manning of Bain and Company led us through the task of creating a long-range strategic plan for USRowing. Bain and Company is one of the world’s top consulting firms in the area of strategy, and we are fortunate to have it as a partner. Creation of our strategic plan will continue at our next meeting in Berkeley in June, and we hope to have the results of our work available by the end of this year.

Boathouse Doc: Rowers Alert Water Droplets
Now that the dreary days of winter are behind us and the racing season has begun, it is important that we pay attention to the dangers of the sun – especially when we are on the water. Water is reflective and significantly intensifies our exposure to the harmful UVA and UVB radiation present in sunlight. Serious sunburns and/or long-term exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer.

How Does a Coxswain Learn How to be a Coxswain? Water Droplets

When rowing in a sweep boat, rowers may ignore the important fact that in a 60-foot-long shell, only one person sees where the boat is going. Rowers speak of the Zen aspects of rowing – getting into one’s own head, one’s own space and staying completely focused on the stroke, the technique and the finesse. But who is “minding the store?”
