The spring season is over, and you’re getting a chance to catch your breath -- now what? If you’re a high school or college program, the boats are on the racks and the athletes are gone. It’s time to lock up the boathouse until the next program begins. Before you close the doors, do some important homework. Clean up the gear, prepare for the next season.
In response to reader requests for water workouts during spring racing season, I have outlined a typical mid-season week of practices. I hope you find them both helpful and inspirational.

Your Board of Directors met in April to continue on the path laid out with our new bylaws. Building on the work of previous meetings, Patrick Manning of Bain and Company led us through the task of creating a long-range strategic plan for USRowing. Bain and Company is one of the world’s top consulting firms in the area of strategy, and we are fortunate to have it as a partner. Creation of our strategic plan will continue at our next meeting in Berkeley in June, and we hope to have the results of our work available by the end of this year.
Over the past several months, USRowing has started to incorporate the governance changes voted into play by our membership last fall. The most significant of these changes relates to the structure and workings of our committees. Why is this so important? Because it centers on how we can set the direction of USRowing to meet and exceed future demands.
USRowing is pleased to announce a partnership with WinTech Racing to support the growth of adaptive rowing in the United States.

At many rowing clubs across the country, coaches have the privilege of working with both masters and junior crews. Both groups of rowers provide different, equally exciting and sometimes very tough challenges. This can open the door to frustration for both rower and coach.

When rowing in a sweep boat, rowers may ignore the important fact that in a 60-foot-long shell, only one person sees where the boat is going. Rowers speak of the Zen aspects of rowing – getting into one’s own head, one’s own space and staying completely focused on the stroke, the technique and the finesse. But who is “minding the store?”

Colin Campbell is returning for his third season as the USRowing junior national team men’s head coach. Prior to taking over head coaching duties, Campbell served as a junior national team assistant coach, helping the U.S. win gold in the eight in 2005. Before joining Peddie School as the boy’s head coach in 2002, Campbell coached at St. Mark’s School, St. Paul’s School and Cincinnati Country Day School.
I have had several rowers who have had a stress fracture of the ribs. What is the best way to treat this injury to allow them to return to rowing as rapidly and safely as possible?
Sincerely,
A New England Coach
I once had a coach confess that he had us train with weights only because he was afraid to not have us do so. It seemed he was unaware or unsure of the value to rowers of weight training, but he did not want to risk falling behind other programs whose rowers did follow a weight-training regimen.
