Mayor Don Ness Coming to Boathouse

As part of the DRC’s celebration, Mayor Don Ness will be coming to the Rowing Club on Tuesday, Sept. 13th at 1:00pm  to give a proclamation recognizing 125 years of rowing in Duluth.  We plan to make this a press event and would like to see as many rowers as possible there. Non-rowers, friends, Park Pointers, etc. are also invited. It’s unfortunate this has to be during the day, but if you aren’t working or if you can take a late lunch, please attend.  We’re going to invite Mayor Ness to try rowing in an 8; we’re hoping some of you will row in the boat with him if he decides to do it.

Celebrating 125 Years of Rowing in Duluth

 

Imagine what it would be like to be in a time machine and watch 28 Duluthians form the Duluth Boat Club in 1886.  The first boathouse opened the next year on 7th Avenue West and the waterfront.  They held a gala reception for 700 people and a 12-piece orchestra played all night.  Although Duluth was considered “Boomtown”, most folks worked for $1.00 per day; mules pulled street trolley cars, and the Grand Opera House was new.  The telephone exchange was only 4 years old and it started with 30 subscribers.  The boathouse had its own phone.
 

In 1903 a new boathouse was built at 10th street on Park Point.  Imagine getting there without a lift bridge or suspended gondola.  By 1907 the DBC had expanded from 195 to 700 members.  The previous year they built the Oatka Beach Club where the current boathouse stands.  You are standing on the original dance floor when you enter to find a scull.  If you were there in 1907 you might have seen the Minnesota State tennis championship on the clay courts at Oatka or witnessed the Venetian Fete with decorated, boats and colored lights along with 10,000 other spectators.  The gondola what took you from the mainland to Park Point was created only a few years earlier.
 

In 1913 you would be able to stand at along side James A. Ten Eyck, and watch the Invincible Four oarsman work out at 5 AM in May and learn about their “rower’s diet” and workout schedule.  The celibate four lived at the boathouse along with others in a sort of cloistered environment.  The coach’s rules were strict and the raising distance was 1.25 miles (2011.66 meters).  Many of their races involved going up and down river around a “stake”.  Thus, their records have never been broken.


Visualize the $75,000.00 Natatorium donated to the boat club by Julius Barnes in 1917.  It was the largest and most modern swimming facility in Minnesota.  The water was heated, filtered and sterilized.  You might have watched Duke Kahanamoku set a world record in that pool.  If you hurry, it is still possible to see pieces of this pool at the site of the new 7-story hotel at Park Point, the Lakehead Boat Basin on 10th street.


Imagine being on Superior Street when Walter Hoover, Duluth’s first international sport’s star, came back from winning the Henley Regatta in 1922.  In the history of the city there has never been such a parade.


The Duluth Boat Club dissolved in 1926 as an independent entity, but the City rented the Natatorium until 1935.  In 1936 the pool was sold to Gar Wood a speedboat racer and builder.  If you were there in 1955 you would see the resurrection of the Duluth Boat Club as the Duluth Rowing Club.  One of the Invincible Four, Max Rheinberger, senior was instrumental in this rebirth.


For over 5.5 decades, the Duluth Rowing Club has been rowing strong and long and accumulating gold medals.  One can only imagine a time machine that takes us to the 150th anniversary of the club.  Imagine what the new boathouse will look like for your grandchildren.  You will be part of that scenario.


We hope you will be able to join us on September 16th at the Depot as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of rowing in Duluth.  There will be many rowers from “the day” who return for this event.  In addition, Mike Cochran will share a wonderful narrative about the historical transformation of the DRC.  He is a great storyteller.  The next day you are welcome to row with the DRC on Saturday or join us for “Death Row” on Sunday.


Most DRC members are selling 5 tickets each and we hope you are able to do this.  Some folks are donating to the club by purchasing tickets and giving them to friends.  Since the event is 2 weeks from today, we will be calling you in a week to check on sales in order to plan the right amount of food.  You can always call or write me with questions if you wish.

 

Each stroke is a new beginning, so keep sending the boat!

 

Past and present rowers, history buffs, and anyone interested are invited to a gala event to commemorate 125 years of rowing in Duluth.  This event, hosted by the Duluth Rowing Club and the St. Louis County Historical Society, will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, 7:00 pm at the Depot.

 

The evening will feature a an entertaining, visual presentation on the Duluth Rowing Club’s history by Mike Cochrane, display of rowing memorabilia, people in period costume, appetizers, cash bar, ragtime music, and the chance to see old rowing friends and tell  a few rowing stories.  Cost is $25.

 

To purchase an advanced ticket, contact Gary Gordon (duluthmn@juno.com) or the St. Louis County Historical Society, 218.733.7586. Advanced tickets are required as only a very limited number will be available at the door.  

There will opportunity for former rowers to see the boathouse and get out for a row the next day.

Paper Recycling

 

We are continuing to collect paper for recycling at the NewPage mill in West Duluth.  NewPage pays us 10 cents per pound of paper we deliver to them.  This has been a very successful fundraiser for the club.  Please save and bring to the boathouse your paper for recycling.

Owen James McVann
Born in Washington D.C. on Feb. 18, 1957
Departed on May 21, 2011 and resided in Greendale, WI.

Died peacefully following a long and courageous struggle with ALS, surrounded by the love of his family on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the age of 54. Loving husband for 25 years of Laura McVann, and devoted father of Meghan and Evan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ruth McVann. He was brother of Mark, Neil (Mary) and Norine (Vicki Breese) McVann; son-in-law of Elizabeth and the late Robert Harnell; and brother-in-law of Lee (Sherry) and Lowell (Jenny) Harnell. He is survived by other family and many friends.

Owen was an avid rower; he was a former member of the Duluth Rowing Club, Milwaukee Rowing Club and former coach of Marquette University Women's Crew.

Visitation at the Funeral Home on Thursday, May 26, 2011, 4:00-7:00 PM, prayer service and shared memories at 7:00 PM. Funeral Service on Friday, May 27, 2011, 10:00 AM at UNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1025 E. Oklahoma Ave. Private interment at Good Hope Cemetery. If desired, memorials appreciated to Unity Lutheran Church or to the ALS Association Wisconsin Chapter.

 

Owen started rowing in Duluth in the 1970s as a teenager and excelled in both their sweep boats and the single. He continued to row and organized several regattas which included lighted night-time parades in Ladysmith WI. Owen continued to coach rowing in Milwaukee even while losing strength.  He was at the 2009 NWIRA at Lake Elmo.
The Juniors total points trophy at NWIRA was named in honor of Owen.

Boathouse Cleanup

 

First I would like to thank all that helped open the boathouse on May 2.  The racks are up and the docks are in.

 

On Thursday, May 12 beginning at 5:00 p.m. we will finish putting in the coach boat docks, put in the barge, rig boats and do a general cleanup of the boathouse.  With lots of help it won't take long.  Come on down when you can. 

 

Duluth Rowing Club's Open House

 

On May 21 between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon there will be an Open House at the DRC Boathouse on Park Point.  Come on down and check out the boathouse and the boat if you are new to rowing.  Or bring your family and friends and show them where you spend your summer.

Volunteer at Grandma's Marathon

 

Once again this year we will be volunteering at Grandma's Marathon.  This is a big fundraiser for the club.  Please come down to the Open house to signup for time slots.

 

 

Learn to Row Classes

 

The Duluth Rowing Club is offering a beginners course for adults on the fundamentals of rowing as an introduction to the sport of rowing. Rowing is great full body workout and a non-impact activity. It is also an excellent way to cross-train for other sports such as running or skiing. Rowing attire consists of workout clothing and sport/tennis shoes.

Three sessions will be offered and held at the Duluth Rowing Club, Park Point, 3911 Minnesota Avenue. Each two-week session is $85.00 and class size is limited:

#1. June 20-30, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday

#2. July 11-21, 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday

#3. July 25-August 4, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday
 

Many of our Junior rower's parents have taken the Learn to Row classes to experence the joy of rowing that their kids have experenced.

New Quad Fundraising

 

We are within 10% of reaching our goal of raising $35,000 for the purchase of two new quad rowing shells.  This is the largest fundraising effort undertaken by the DRC in receint years. 

 

If you haven't donated yet or would like to increase your contribution please  send make your check payable to the “Duluth Rowing Club” and sent to PO Box 655 Duluth MN 55801 drop it off at the Open House on May 21.  Remember all contributions are tax-deductible.

 

Junior Rowing

 

The Junior rowing season will begin on Monday, June 13.  Our head coach Bonnie will be joined by assistant coaches Kendra and Erin.

 

Experienced Junior rowers will meet at 8:00 Monday - Friday and new Junior rower will begin in our Novice Camp that meets at 10:00 Monday - Friday for two weeks.  At the conclusion of the camp they will join the experenced Juniors at 8:00.

Death Row Results 2010

23 boats lined up between buoys set out on St Louis Bay for this year’s Death Row Regatta. Most of the boats leaped forward at the sound of the starting gun, while a few invested some moments in holding back while the surge of dedicated racers swarmed forward. To those on shore it seemed as if hardly any time at all had passed before all boats had rounded the point and disappeared beneath the Blatnik bridge. Quiet fell among the shore crowd then, as if for them the race was over. A moment later, though, conversation began regarding the best places to observe the pack racing by. The Oliver Bridge and Boy Scout Landing drew the most interest, and other locations were mentioned.

  

In keeping with most sports writing, these are the top three finishers:

       Masters’ Mixed: Tom, Greg, Bonnie, and Jenny    01:58:10

       Masters’ Mens’ Double: Pete and Jeff    2:00:21

       Open Mixed: University of St Thomas Alumni (featuring Andrea Peterson, daughter of Greg and Jenny)    2:01:29

 

Thanks were expressed to all those who helped with this Death Row Regatta: registration, boat drivers, food donations, Dave Johnson for timing, starting line cheerers, finish line help, getting boats out of the water, and especially to Mike and Diane Cochran who organized the regattaand the meal and volunteered their home for the finish area.

Death Row Update
September 9, 2010

Dear Duluth Rowing Club Members,

We are quickly approaching the date for Death Row, which this year is Sunday, September 19th.    We encourage all rowers to participate.   It is a fun time for rowers of all abilities.   We also need some volunteer help in order to make this event work.    We particularly need boat drivers to help guide rowers up the river and to respond to safety situations.   Since we have a limited number of club motor boats, we need some people with their own boats as well.   We also need food for the banquet.   Spaghetti and beverages will be provided, but we also need appetizers, chips, bread, fruit, salads (green, pasta) and desserts.       All participants are requested to bring enough food of their choice to feed at least 10 people (more is better).   Family members who provide food are also welcome to participate in the banquet after the race.   Spectators are welcome anywhere along the race course.   Spectators who wish to watch the finish should bring lawn chairs.    

·        The boat house needs to be thoroughly cleaned the day before the event.

·        We need two people to help with registration and shirt sales the morning of the race at the boat house.

·        We need helpers at the finish to help the rowers get their boats out of the water.

·        We could use two or three helpers to serve food for the banquet

·        We need people to shuttle shoes, clothes and food from the boat house to the finish.

·        We will also need to shuttle people from the finish to the boat house.

·        We need someone to pull the boat trailer to the finish the day before the event.

·        Once the banquet and awards ceremonies are concluded, we need people to unload boats from the boat trailer at the boat house.    This is quick and easy if we have enough people.

52nd Duluth International Regatta

The 52nd running of the Duluth International Regatta is coming quickly. DRC rower entry forms are at the boathouse and are due to Bonnie by Friday, July 2. This regatta is our MAJOR fundraiser for the season. We are asking each participant to help by bringing items for the concessions stand. A list of items needed is below and a sign-up sheet is in the boathouse. We will also need many volunteers on regatta day to have a successful day of racing. Positions range from stake boat holders, concession stand workers to helping set up for the banquet. Everyone's help is needed. Thanks ahead of time for your support.

Learn to Row Classes

As we finish up the first Learn to Row class of the season, the new rowers are having a great time learning to scull in the clubs quads (4 person boats). The students start out learning the basics of rowing in our 16 person "barge" and after the first week graduate to smaller boats. By the end of the class they will be able to row in our recreational singles and doubles.
Currently we have openings in our Session 2 and Session 3 Learn to Row classes. Session 2 begins on July 12 and Session 3 begins on July 26. The classes meet from 6-8 pm Monday-Thursday for two weeks. The cost is $75. If you haven't had this "on the water" experience sign-up now! Paper Drive Brings $$$ to the DRC

The DRC continues to collect magazines, catalogs and shinny news paper inserts in the dumpster at the boathouse. This is one of our major fundraisers. We have raised over $750 to date. Please save and bring your recyclable paper to the boathouse. Have your friends and family help too.

Megan Kress from the Duluth Boat Club is looking for paddlers for a "competitive" dragon boat team this summer.   The goal is to compete in the Thunder Bay Dragon Boat Festival on July 17th, the Lake Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival on August 7th and the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival here in the Twin Ports on August 28th.     This team will  practice with the intent to place in the top 10% in these dragon boat festivals.

Dues are Due May 22
A reminder to all current club members that 2010 dues are due by May 22. After this date current members will have to pay a late fee. Membership forms can be found on the DRC web site.  Or by clicking here: DRC Membership Form 2010
NEW! Regatta Package Offered
This year the DRC is offering a pre-paid regatta package. Competitive rowers will be able to pay registration fees for both the Duluth Regatta and Death Row for a combined price of $50, which is $20 less than if the registration fees are paid individually at the time of the regatta. The regatta package can be purchased only when dues are paid.
NEW! Lifetime Membership Opportunity
The DRC has initiated a new lifetime membership opportunity. A person can become a DRC member for life by paying $2250 for an individual membership or $3300 for families (which includes dependent children until they are older than 24 years old). The cost of the DRC Lifetime membership is equivalent to ten years of annual club dues at our current rate.

Open House

The DRC Open House is Saturday May 22, 2010 from 10:00AM - 12 Noon. Come on down and bring a friend or two. It is a great time to pay your dues and sign your friends up for the Junior Beginning Rowing Camp or a Learn to Row Session.

DRC to Work at Grandma's Marathon

The DRC will once again be helping at Grandma's Marathon at the Beer Tent and Spaghetti Feed as a club fund raiser. We will need volunteers. Sign up sheets will be available on May 22nd at the DRC Open House from 10 -12 noon. The club makes a good share of it's fundraising $$ from this event. This is a good chance to get in some of your DRC Volunteer Hours.

 Thanks to an early spring, we are opening the Duluth Rowing Club Boathouse on Thursday, April 15th! There will be workers starting at 4:30; we're hoping that you can come whenever possible that afternoon/evening. The plan is to put in docks on both sides and put up racks inside the boathouse.

Remember that lots of hands (and backsides) makes for quick work.

This year the DRC is offering a pre-paid regatta package.   Competitive rowers will be able to pay registration fees for both the Duluth Regatta and Death Row for a combined price of $50, which is $20 less than if the registration fees are paid invidually at the time of the regatta.   The regatta package can be purchased when dues are paid.
NEW!  Lifetime Membership Opportunity.
The DRC has initiated a new lifetime membership opportunity.     A person can become a DRC member for life by paying $2250 for an individual membership or $3300 for families (which includes children until they are older than 24 years old).   The cost of the DRC Lifetime membership is equivalent to ten years of annual club dues at our current rate.
  
Save your glossy magazines and paper
The DRC is continuing to collect glossy magazines and other glossy paper as a fund raiser.   Bring it down to the boat house any time.
  
Jim Martyn leaves wonderful gift to the Duluth Rowing Club
Jim Martyn was a rower from Madison Wisconsin who for several years spent many mornings and evenings rowing here in Duluth while in town visiting his mother.  He was a wonderful person and a great friend to all of us who knew him.  Jim loved rowing and skiing in Duluth and considered moving here.  We were very saddened when Jim contracted ALS and eventually died from this horrible disease on May 8, 2009.  
  
In his will Jim directed that $10,000 from his estate be given to the Duluth Rowing Club.    The DRC Board of Directors has decided that this gift from Jim will be used towards the purchase of a new top of the line racing quad that will be named after Jim in his honor.    A quad of top racing quality will cost approximately $20,000.   Jim's gift has brought us half way there.   Proceeds from our various fund raisers will now be directed toward the goal of buying the Jim Martyn Quad.

Fall Banquet and Annual Meeting

We will be having our end of the season awards banquet and annual meeting on Sunday, September 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the Lafayette Community Center. It will be a pot luck dinner so bring something to share and the club will provide drinks, plates and silverware. What ever we get we'll eat! We will also vote on board members for next year.

Closing the Boathouse

Although it seems like we just got summer the weather will turn and boathouse needs to be buttoned up for the winter. This year we will do it on two evenings. The first evening, Tuesday, October 6, we will take in the coaching boats, coaching docks, the barge and one of the rowing docks. On the second evening, Tuesday, October 13, we will take down the racks and move the trailer and everything else into the boathouse. On both evening the fun will begin at 5:00 or whenever YOU can get there.

Winter Erg "Rental"

We will again be looking for homes for our 7 ergs this winter. We would like to lend them to club members that are going to use them to get into shape for next years rowing season. To get your name in the lottery for an erg send an e-mail to president@duluthrowing.org with your name, phone # and the number of meters you plan to row for the winter. If more than one club member would be using the erg you can add the meters together. The "winners" of the lottery will be announced at the banquet (or called after wards). The ergs will be give out after October 1 and need to be back at the boat house on May 22, 2010 (for the DRC Open House). We ask for a $25 donation for the upkeep of the ergs.

If you are interested in storing a boat on the club property for the winter, please contact Greg Peterson at 722-0668.  We are going to have a more "formal" process for keeping track of stored boats so they are removed by May 1.

DRC 3rd at NWIRA Chamionship Regatta

Duluth Rowers,

Congradulation on finishing 3rd in the team points for the Lipton Cup.  The Juniors also placed 3rd the Owen McVann Cup points.

September 13, 2009

Death Row is on September 13th this year, just over two weeks away. This is one of the most fun rowing events of the year and also a fund raiser for the DRC, two great reasons to plan on participating. If you haven’t already organized a team and reserved a boat with Bonnie, get going quick while there are still uncommitted rowers and boats. Order a Death Row T-Shirt while you are at it. T-shirt sales also help raise money for the club. We are having fewer made this year with the hopes of selling them all. Please remember that we request all members to provide a food item for the banquet following the race. Bring your favorite salad or dessert and please bring enough for at least ten people. We also need volunteers to operate safety boats for Death Row. We can never have too many safety boats, so please ask family and friends to help out. They will have a very enjoyable day seeing the St. Louis River, just like the rowers. For many of us, this is the last event of the season. Lets make it a great time!
