Help Needed - Duluth Dragon Boat Festival

The 2015 Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival (event website http://lakesuperiordragons.com) will be held on Saturday, August 22nd, and requires many volunteers to help make the event a success! Volunteers are needed for the boat holders, boat drivers, and course set up. It is a fun event, so please consider helping out!

The Duluth Rowing Club is receiving a $4000 donation in return for providing race services to the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival. The race services include filling all positions on the sign-up sheet. The DRC is contractually obligated to fill all these positions. Since the Dragon Boat Festival is the same weekend as NWIRA, it will be especially important that those club members or friends and family of club members who are not going to Regina for NWIRA consider helping out with the festival. It is a lot of fun, and all volunteers will receive a volunteer t-shirt.

The volunteers are volunteering for the benefit of the DRC -- but the event benefits many charitable causes (which the DRC has benefitted from in the past, through the Rotary Double and $1,500 in rowing scholarships), and pledges raised through the event go to support area cancer programs. Additionally, through the relationship with the Rotary and exposure the DRC gets from its volunteer efforts, we hope to receive future help with the new boathouse.

The course set up will take place on either Thursday or Friday (August 20th or 21st) to be determined by the setup team.

The course take down will probably take place on Sunday (August 23rd) after the Festival, unless the take-down team decides they prefer to do it Saturday.

Contact race director and on-site coordinator Mike Cochran with any questions at email r0wmaster@hotmail.com (rowmaster with a "zero") or phone: (h) 218-626-3415; (c) 218-316-2928

2015 Duluth International Regatta

Dear Rowing Friends,

You are invited to participate in the 57th Duluth International Regatta on Saturday, July 11, 2015 in Duluth, Minnesota, sponsored by the Duluth Rowing Club.

Enclosed is the Duluth International Regatta information for your review. The Duluth International Regatta is an USRowing certified and classic rowing event with 29, 2000-meter events for both men and women. The racing events are available in the Junior, Open and Master’s categories. Each race will be run as a 7 lane time trial with the fastest time determining the winner. Because of the time saved by not running heats, we have a full complement of races available. An awards ceremony and banquet will be held at the regatta site follow the racing. The regatta will be run with USRowing referees officiating, up-to-date timing, starting platforms, entry and departing docks, concessions including rowing gear and clothing.

As in years past, camping will be available at designated areas on the DRC property. If you have any questions, visit our website at duluthrowing.org or for registration information call Dave Kask at (218) 724-2775. We hope you will join us on the water this summer for great racing at the headwaters of Lake Superior.

Are you ready!

Boathouse Repair

Due to high winds, high water, and very nasty ice conditions, the west edge and wall of the existing boathouse took quite a beating this past winter. The outermost beams have been displaced and the columns and pilings that they sat on have been moved by those very ice and high wind conditions. Consequently, the last 20' of floor and joist/beam structure dropped a foot and a half. At this time, it will not be possible to do the normal open the boathouse routine of putting shell racks up and getting things in proper order for rowing to start. You can see by the photographs what we found the day after ice left that end of the Bay a few weeks ago.

To get things ready for the "normal" boathouse opening, we have picked Sunday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m. for a work party to jack that end of the boathouse back up and put the beams back in proper position. There is a big need for lots of help, so please bring waders (if you have them), warm clothes, and the willingness to spend a couple of hours making the DRC Boathouse right again. We don't have current email addresses for all masters, so please pass the word around. Any and all help will be welcomed! Please put the date on your calendar.

Opening the Boathouse

The "normal" boathouse opening, docks & racks & shell rigging, is scheduled for Monday, May 11 4:30 p.m.  with a back-up/finish projects workday Tuesday, May 12 at 4:30 (if needed)

Come when you can after work or school.  Many hands makes the work go fast!
