2014 Duluth International Regatta

Dear Rowing Friends,

You are invited to participate in the 2014 Duluth International Regatta on Saturday,

July12, 2014 in Duluth, Minnesota, sponsored by the Duluth Rowing Club. Enclosed is the Duluth International Regatta information for your review.

The Duluth International Regatta is an USRowing certified and classic rowing event with 29, 2000-meter events for both men and women. The racing events are available in the Junior, Open and Master’s categories. Each race will be run as a 7 lane time trial with the fastest time determining the winner. Because of the time saved by not running heats, we have a full complement of races available. An awards ceremony and banquet will be held at the regatta site follow the racing. The regatta will be run with USRowing referees officiating, up-to-date timing, starting platforms, entry and departing docks, concessions including rowing gear and clothing. As in year’s past, camping will be available at designated areas on the DRC property.

If you have any questions, visit our website at duluthrowing.org or for registration information call Dave Kask at (218) 724-2775.

We hope you will join us on the water this summer for great racing at the headwaters of Lake Superior.

Are you ready!

We will be closing the boathouse on Thursday, October 24 beginning at 5:00 p.m.  All club members should be present to help with this final task of the season.

All the boats on the center racks must be derigged and moved out the boathouse.  The racks will be taken down and the trailers move in.  The boats will then be put on the trailers.  Both rowing docks must be removed from the water along with the coaching boat dock and boat lift.

As you see there is much to do and with many hands it will be done in short time.  Boathouse Closing checks will be returned when the project is complete.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

We will be having 3 Learn to Row sessions again this year.  The sessions meet Monday through Thursday at 6:00 p.m. for two weeks.  The first week is in our “Barge” which allows new rowers to learn the basic rowing stroke without the tipsiness of a “real boat”.  The second week is in quads and doubles learning the art of sculling.  By the end of the session members are proficient enough to take out our recreational singles and doubles.

Dates for the sessions are:

Session #1 – June 18- 28, Monday – Thursday 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The Duluth Superior Film Festival

May 30-June 3 2012

We are proud to announce the launch of The Duluth Superior Film Festival 2012. The Duluth Superior Film Festival and Visit Duluth could not be more pleased to bring this festival of film, music and art. DSFF will take place at various venues around the city including Zinema, Sons Of Norway Hall, Duluth Tycoons, PROVE Gallery, and Clyde Iron Works.  More information can be found at:  http://www.dusuff.com/ or http://www.facebook.com/dusuff

Of special interest to Duluth rowers will be the film The Connection (‘Crazy Irishman’ Ian Harvey rowing his single scull boat across Lake Superior). Here is a short synopsis of the film, as written by the producers:

>>When Ian Harvey set out to row across Lake Superior for charity in 2005, they called him 'The Crazy Irishman' crazy to row 400 miles in a single scull boat across the largest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Superior or Gitchie Gumie is so cold and deep it's said it never gives up its dead. It's where  the 729 foot Edmund Fitzgerald was lost in a storm with all of her 29 crew, it’s where the American poet Longfellow was inspired to write 'The Song of Hiawatha.'

The Chippewa or Ojibwa Indians who live around the lake followed Ian Harvey’s dramatic row which took 8 days and two nights. When Ian reached Grand Island, members of the Bear Clan went to meet him. On the jetty in Munising, Kris LeVeque felt an instant connection between Ian and her legendary ancestors who'd made a similar journey in the early 1800's to fight the Chippewa’s deadly enemy The Sioux. The connection was so strong that the LeVeque family invited Ian to be adopted into their Bear Clan and become a blood brother.
