Iron Oar Club

The "Iron Oar Club" was formed in 2008 to recognize the top DRC Rowers. The guidelines are simple to make the club the athlete must break the required time for their gender. Upon achieving that time the athlete is posted on the ranking board located on the DRC website and ranked.

Congratulations to all that have pushed themselves to achieve more, may it inspire others to do great things.

Use the handout below to submit your application to the Iron Oar Club.

Closing the Boat House
Tuesday, October 14 @ 5:00pm
HELP NEEDED:

We will be closing the boat house for the season on Tuesday, October 14.
The tasks that need to be done are: remove the boats from the center racks, derig any of these boats that are still rigged, put the trailer in the boat house, put the boats back on the trailer, move in the coaching boats, take out the dock.  If you can't make it at 5:00, come when you can.  It sounds like a lot to do but it goes pretty fast with lots of help.  Bring your friends and family.

Duluth Rowing Club Update
September 12, 2008
Annual Meeting
Annual meeting and banquet on Sunday September 28, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at Lafayette Square (3026 Minnesota Ave). Potluck, what we get is what we eat.  Awards for the season will also be handed out.
 Dues Increase
The board of directors proposes an increase in dues beginning in 2009.  This is due to the increased expenses for power, insurance, taxes etc.  Dues would go from $100 to $125 for Juniors/Students, from $220 to $225 for Seniors & Masters, and from $300 to $330 for families.  This will be voted on by the membership at the Annual Meeting.
Missing
We are missing a Concept2 ergometer.  It is a model D (blue one) with DRC #6 on the side.  If you know of its whereabouts, please return it to the boathouse.
For Sale
Tunturi Rowing Ergometer.  $300.  Can be seen at the boathouse.  Contact Dave or Bonnie for more information at 724-2775.
 Death Row
Please plan on participating in the 2008 Death Row on Sunday September 21st.  This is a really fun event that you will always remember.  There is no other rowing event like this anywhere, since it is a long distance race with a mass start of all crews at the same time.   Death Row was mentioned in the U.S. Rowing Almanac as being one of the 10 most unique rowing events in the nation.
The first half of the row is very interesting since we row across a wide open harbor and the second half of the row is incredibly beautiful.   All finishers will receive an award and recognition.    This is one event where everyone wins.
In order to make this a successful event for the rowing club, we need a lot of rowers and a lot of helpers.  The main help that we need is for boat drivers and boats.  This is a big safety factor and we can never have too many chase boats on the water for this event.    We also need food donations.  We will be providing spaghetti, soft drinks and water for the picnic meal following death row.   To make this meal interesting, we need donations of a variety of salads, munchies and desserts (like cookies and brownies).   If everyone from the DRC brings enough for 10 people, we will have plenty of food for over 100 rowers.
Other ways to help out: morning registration of teams, helping with the food at Mike and Diane's house, assisting crews at the end of the race, race starting and timing.  If you can help out, contact Mike Cochran by email mcochran@allete.com or home phone 218-626-3415.  There will also be a sign up sheet for food down at the rowing club.  If you would like to row in this event, pleace contact Bonnie Kask.
The T-shirts will be really cool this year, so when you register for Death Row be sure to order one.   There will only be a few extras for sale on race day and they will cost more on race day.  Registration forms and a map of the course are available on our DRC Website at http://www.duluthrowing.org/.

Duluth International Regatta 2008

June 1, 2008

Dear Rowing Friends,

You are invited to participate in the 2008 DRC International Regatta on Saturday,
July 12, 2008 in Duluth, Minnesota, sponsored by the Duluth Rowing Club. Enclosed is the DRC International Regatta information for your review.

The DRC International Regatta is an USRowing certified and classic rowing event with 27, 2000-meter events for both men and women. The racing events are available in the Junior, Open and Master’s categories. Each race will be run as a time trial with the fastest time determining the winner. Because of the time saved by not running heats, we have a full complement of races available. An awards ceremony and banquet will be held at the regatta site follow the racing. The regatta will be run with USRowing referees officiating, up-to-date timing, starting platforms, entry and departing docks, concessions including rowing gear and clothing. As in year’s past, camping will be available at designated areas on the DRC property.

Plan on fall racing with us in September at the “Death Row” Regatta, Sunday,
September 21, 2008. Row 17.1 miles with us up the St. Louis River to Fond du Lac, Minnesota. This is a great way to enjoy fall rowing in the beautiful Duluth/St. Louis Bay area. For “Death Row” regatta questions, please contact Mike Cochran at 218-626-3415 or mcochran@mnpower.com.

If you have any questions, visit our website at duluthrowing.org or for registration information call Dave Kask at (218) 724-2775.

We hope you will join us on the water this summer for great racing at the headwaters of Lake Superior.

Are you ready!

Duluth Rowing Club Update
July 16, 2008
To All Duluth Rowing Club Members,
A big THANK YOU to all the DRC members, families and friends that stepped up to help out at the Duluth International Regatta.  It is wonderful to be part of a club where everyone jumps in and takes care of things that need to be done.
Even though we were not able to row on the water, the Ergatta we had was very successful.  The participants had a good time pulling hard and cheering on their teammates.
Sincerely,
Dave Kask
