singmarsh
The 2005 College Baseball Season began with the University of San Diego/ Cal Poly baseball game over the weekend. Dragons Steven Singleton (SS) and Jon Marshall (C)
are shown following the game.
Steven did well, starting at shortstop and hitting two doubles in the 3 game series.  Jon played in Friday's game, driving in the tying run in the 7th inning, and being hit by a pitch and scoring in the 9th.
They were instrumental teammates on the 2000 Div III State Championship team that went 25-3 and won the West Coast Classic in San Jose.

Jon Marshall... By Coach Joel Kaufman

Jon was my catcher from the day I stepped in as the JV Head Coach at Bishop O'Dowd. He remained as my field general for 2 years of JV and moved up with me to the Varsity team the final 2 years.

Jon was a special young man. He not only had a fantastic work ethic on the baseball field, but was a first class individual off the field. If a big hit was needed, bring on Jon Marshall. During Jon's sophomore year, our JV team scrimmaged the Varsity team at practice one day. Our JV went 25-0 that year and Varsity was a few games over .500. There was some annomosity towards our JV team. Jon came up to bat and hit a 3 run homer across the street off one of the Varsity starters to put us up by 2 runs. We knew we had a special ballplayer.
Jon continued to provide special moments for my varsity team. My favorite was his grand slam on the gym in the bottom of the 6th to break a 6-6 tie against Moreau Catholic.

Jon is doing quite well in New York. Check out the link:

Teddy Kearns:
Graduated 2000
Batted .411 with 7 homers and 38 RBI's
Unanimous 1st Team All League Selection

Teddy according to Coach Kaufman:
Teddy was a team player. He was a positive force for the Varsity and the best 1st baseman I have ever had as a coach. In clutch situtations, Teddy would pull out the hit or save an error for an infielder with a short hop snag at 1st. All our future 1st baseman will be hard pressed to meet the standard set by Teddy Kearns. Fordham was the one school that made several calls to me. They really wanted Ted. Teddy made the right choice by going there and will have a successful college career. He will have to let those Yankees and Mets fans know that our
Bay Area teams are better.

Jonny celebrates Stanford regional Victory
June Alumni Feature of the Month: Jonny Ash
Who else but Jonny Ash!!!! Coach Kaufman remembers: I still remember Jonny as my shortstop on Junior Varsity. He had so much potential and was such a hard worker. After practice was over, he asked me to hit him ground balls until there was no more daylight to see.
Things were not always easy for Jonny. He had his struggling times like most ballplayers. But his work ethic and keeping his head up got him thru those rough times and in his senior year he hit .598 and was All-State.
He is in the all-time top 10 in batting average in the state. If the game was on the line in 2000, I wanted Jonny up. He came thru practically every time.

Someone asked me if I was surprised about Jonny's performance at Stanford. My response was ..."with all due respect to Coach Marquess, he waited way too long to get Jonny into their everyday lineup....Jonny is one in a million. I am proud to have been a small part in his development and am extremely proud to have him as a friend. I sat in row 2 behind the plate at the Regionals and watched as Jonny received the All-Tournament award. It was hard for me to not have tears of joy in my eyes for such a great young man."

Jonny Ash, the SS of the Dragons and 3B of the Stanford Cardinals, was rewarded on the Opening Day of the Major League Draft as he was picked in the 11th round by the Houston Astros.

He then pitched 3 innings the next night in the Championship game in relief, picking up the win against California power Mater Dei.

Robby was a 1st team All-League selection and picked to the All-State team.
