Jazz Defeats Rheems to Cap Off Perfect 15-0 Season

Game #15, 6/30/02, Rheems Angels vs MJ Jazz at Rheems Field #3, 7:00 p.m. Final Score Jazz 6 Angels 3. This game was originally scheduled at Kunkle Field on 6/27/02, but due to rain and Kunkle not being available for the make-up date, the Jazz played another home game at the other teams home field. The Jazz girls came into the game undefeated and confident, having already beat the 2nd place Angels on this field a couple weeks ago. A large group of Jazz fans were on hand tonight with the hopes of an undefeated season. Rheems jumped out to a 2 run lead in the top of the 1st inning on an error, a walk, 2 wild pitches and 3 ground outs. Lead off hitter Lauren Truitt got 1 of the runs back in the bottom of the 1st as she singled and stole 2nd base. Gabby Quatse got an infield singled with 2 outs to keep the inning alive for Courtney Turpin. Turbo singled in Lauren for first Jazz run. The Jazz tied the game in the bottom of 3rd inning as Maria Quatse got things going with a single, moved to 2nd on Truitt's sacrifice bunt and took 3rd on Dressel's infield ground out. Co-captain Lyndsey Corso singled over short with 2 outs to plate Maria and even the score at 2-2. The Jazz put the game away with a four run 5th inning that started on an infield single by pinch hitter Brittni Buckius. Co-captains Maria Quatse and Amy Dressel both reached base with well placed bunts to load the bases. With 2 outs and the bases still loaded Gabby Quatse hit a rocket off of the first basemans glove that scored 2 runs. That was Gabby's third hit of the game including a double. That was some clutch hit girl. Nice rip. Turpin and Hatt followed with singles each knocking in a run to make the score 6-2. The Angels came back with a run in the top of the 6th for their final tally of the game. After the error in the 1st inning the Jazz queens tighten up the defense and Tori Hatt pitched another great 7 inning complete game allowing only 2 hits and no earned runs. Tori K'ed 4 and walked 4 and was a bit wild at times but it worked to her advantage as she kept the Angel hitters off balance at the plate. All six of the Jazz runs were scored on 2 out hits. Really clutch hitting in a big game ladies. That's what it's all about. Great game tonight girls. Truly a team effort in achieving your goal of an undefeated season. You girls played like the Champions you are and I can speak for all of the coaches when I say we're very proud of each and everyone of you. Congratulations Jazz you're 15 and zip and have the best record in the league and are the top seed for the playoffs. What a year ladies. For the record this is the second time in three years the Jazz has gone undefeated during the regular season. You have kept the Jazz tradition strong and are now in an elite group. Love you guys. Lets rock and roll in the playoffs. Good luck ladies.    Daryl

Jazz Wins League Playoff Championship

The 2002 Mount Joy Jazz girls went 4-1 to become the first Jazz team to win the Teener Jr. League Playoff Championship. It took six years but this was the team that got the job done. A great group of determined, hard working young ladies that don't know the word quit. I would just like to say on behalf of the Jazz coaching staff that we are all so proud of you as individuals and for what you accomplished this year as a team. You're the best in 2002 and noboby can ever take that away from you because you earned it baby. The playoffs were held at Mountville this year and started Monday evening July 8th and concluded with the championship game Thursday night July 11th. The Jazz was the top seeded team in the playoffs as they finished the year 15-0 posting the best league record. This gave the Jazz the home field advanage (last at bats) throughout the playoffs. The first round games on Monday was win you're in and lose you're out. The winners would continue on into a 2 game elimination format starting with a double header Tuesday. The Jazz was matched up with the E-town Bears on Monday and like the other 2 times during the regular season the Jazz girls had no problems handling them. The Jazz queens cruised to a 9-2 win as Tori Hatt tossed her third 1 hitter against the Bears this year picking up 11 K's. Next up in the first game Tuesday evening the Jazz faced last years defending playoff champs Mountville which beat the Jazz in 8 innings the previous year to win the playoff championship. Donegal's High School varsity head coach Bill Groff was on hand to scout the action. The Jazz took a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and with good pitching, defense and aggressive base running controlled the game throughout. The Mountville Thunder however didn't go away as they pulled within 1 run in the 3rd but the Jazz added 2 runs in the bottom half and 2 more in the 4th. The Thunder got a couple more runs in the 6th inning to keep it close but the Jazz girls hung on for the win 6-3. Tori Hatt impressed coach Groff with 10 strike outs and only 1 walk going the distance. On to the second game of the night. Who else would it be but the Rheems Angels. Both teams undefeated at this point and the winner gets a bye on Wednesday. The Angels started off with a walk, a Jazz error and a single to quickly score 1 run and put the Jazz in a big hole. The Jazz turned it around on their clean-up hitter as they turned a 2nd to 1st to home (4-3-2) double play cutting down a run at the plate. The Jazz got the next batter on a bang-bang play at first and left a runner stranded at 3rd to end the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd Tori Hatt walked and with 1 out Casie Krady tripled in Tori and scored herself on a throwing error to give the Jazz a 2-1 lead. The Angels came right back in the top of the 3rd inning on a 3 run homer by Garber to take the lead 4-2. This was the first home run Tori gave up all year. Tori tripled to lead off the 4th and scored making it a one run game again. After allowing the home run in the 3rd inning Hatt sucked it up and shutdown the Angels on 1 hit over the next four innings. Mean while the Jazz got the sticks going in the 5th inning as they exploded for 7 runs on 5 hits to put this one in the bank. The Jazz added another run in the 6th to make the final score 11-4 as the Jazz pounded out 12 hits for the game. Tori Hatt pitched 14 innings tonight picking up both wins and seemed to get stronger as the night went on. Great job Tori you're the real deal honey. After a day off on the bye the Jazz queens were sitting pretty only needing one more win to capture the crown. Who would the Jazz play Thursday? Who else the Rheems Angels. Just like the Teener Jr. Tournament these two teams will battle again. This time the Angels would have to beat the Jazz twice to win the championship. The Angels came out all business knowning this was do or die. They scored single runs in the first three innings with the help of 2 Jazz errors and was up 3-0. The Jazz got one of the runs back in the bottom of the 3rd but didn't seem very intense in this game. It was like they were warming up for the next game which they didn't need to play if they could put this one away. The Angels added another run in the 5th inning to make the score 4-1. This seemed to wait the Jazz girls up to the seriousness of the situation. In the bottom of the 5th inning the Jazz got it going with the bases loaded and only 1 out and then was denied a run or more on a bad call by the base umpire. The second baseman miss an attempted tag out of the base runner before throwing the ball to first base and a double play was call to end the inning. Third base coach Scott Snader was furious at the call and almost got tossed from the game. The Jazz girls didn't let the bad call get them down and no way were they going down without a fight. With 2 outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the 7th the Jazz queens bounced back with 2 runs only to leave the tying run at 2nd base to end the game. Final score Angels 4 and the Jazz 3. The whole year has now come down to one game for the championship. The pressure is clearly on the Jazz as they are the undefeated regular season champs. This is a game for all the marbles. These two teams know each other well as this will be the eighth and final time the Angels and Jazz play in 2002. Thursday July 11, 2002 the second game of the night gets started at 8:00 p.m. with the Jazz having the last at bats. Tori Hatt took the mound and held the Angels scoreless the first 3 inning. The Jazz got a run in the 1st inning as Truitt singled, Corso walked and after a pop-up and force out at 3rd base Hatt ripped a single to plate Corso. The score stayed 1-0 Jazz until the top of the 4th when the Angels put together 3 hits scoring 2 runs to take a 2-1 lead. The Jazz ladies showed no panic going into the bottom of the 4th inning trailing. They sucked it up and showed their toughness that produced an undefeated season for them. With one out Gabby Quatse, Hatt and Dressel each singled to load the bases. Up stepped Casie at the bat. Krady hit a line drive rocket up the middle that shot past the outfielders before they could react to it. This ball was smoked for a base clearing triple. What a clutch hit in the championship game to put the Jazz ahead 4-2 and turn the game around. Casie scored on a throwing error making it 5-2 after 4 innings. Great hit Casie, you're the money girl. We really needed that one and you delivered it. Casie's hit took the halo from the Angels heads and Tori Hatt finished strong allowing only 1 hit over the final 3 innings and no runs. The Jazz defense was awesome as everyone made the plays whether they were routine or tough chances. Got to have great team defense in big games like this one. The Jazz added their final run of the year in the 5th inning to make it a 6-2 win for the championship. An unbelievable season girls. You are the best team going and just a great bunch of young ladies. Congratulations Jazz queens you're number 1 baby.
