Redhook (Fats) Takes Advantage of Opportunities and Moves on to Championship
On Wednesday, Redhook took the field against eight year participants Angry Wade's. RH in their first year in the league was looking to win one game and move on to the league championship series. The game (like most in the playoffs) was competitive and was not securely in anyone's favor until the seventh inning. Angry Wade's took an early 2-0 lead after two innings. In the top of the fourth however, AW's defense which had been so stout for most of their playoff run started to show some gaps in their armor. In the inning with the bases loaded and two out, what should have been a routine ground ball for the third out was bobbled allowing RH's first run to score. A similar situation took place in the fifth as a ground ball to short with two out should have ended the inning, but an error allowed the tying run to score. Wade's unable to score more then the two runs, had to take the field tied in the top of the sixth with the 2-2 tie. In the top of the sixth after an error by the SS to start the inning, Wade's was able to record the next two outs. That brings up the Dodge "Y" turning point of the game. With two out and the bases full, a sharp ground ball by Leonal M. of Redhook was bobbled by AW's third baseman. With a slow runner in Leonal he still had plenty of time to make the throw. The throw was up the first base line however. Julia playing first for AW, made a terrific play to catch the ball and apply the tag on the runner. However, the momentum of the runner was too much for Julia to handle and she lost the ball, allowing two runs to score. Infuriated by what he perceived as a non interference call, AW pitcher Chris G. let his emotions boil over eventually leading to his ejection by home plate umpire Anthony S. After going quietly in the sixth, Wade's took the field in the seventh trailing for the first time in the game by a total of two. With one on and one out Cliff hit a long fly ball to right that was misread by Sammy for a two run insurance homer. Wade's would go quietly in the seventh ending their playoff run.   Up next for the Redhook team is a match up with one of the league's other first year teams, the surprising Mucho Gusto. MG's terrific defense and clutch hitting silenced critics and BK Bread's bats to earn this championship bid.  JAKE

Defending Champs are Swept out of Playoffs
In what can only be described as a shocking turn of events, Mucho Gusto has swept BK Bread out of the playoffs. In game one MG held the mighty BKB offense to just one run. Game two played out very much the same. In game two all of the scoring was done in the first inning and it was by MG. In the top of the first a play at the plate short circuited any chance for BKB to take an early lead. In the bottom of the inning MG mounted a two out, three run rally. Both teams would get stout pitcing and play solid defense. The score never changes and MG moves on to play for the Dodge YMCA title.

Wade's Takes Playoff Opener over BNS.

On Tuesday Angry Wade's (AW) and BNS took the field to renew a rivalry that goes back to the 2000 season. Both teams entered the playoffs this year with identical 8-3 records with BNS owning the home field advantage due to their head to head regular season win.

When the game began it was clear that there was no advantage to be found for either club. AW took an early two run lead. After an error by the pitcher, Sal (CF) hit a two run HR. After a single and a controversial call at first allowed the inning to continue, AW tacked on another run to take an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning BNS didn't capitalized on some spotty defense and clutch singles by Aaron and Stacey to climb into the lead at 4-3. AW quickly regained the lead in the top of the second. After the home plate umpire clearly blew a call at third when the base runner at third took a premature lead, AW capitalized with back to back singles to recapture the lead at 5-4. AW would tack on a run in the top of the third and extend their lead to two. The score stayed the same until the bottom of the fourth where BNS would draw even on a one out; two RBI double by Chris B. BNS couldn't drive failed to drive in any more runs though and would have to settle for the 6-6 tie going into the top of the fifth. After the first single and a walk opened up the inning, BNS quickly got two outs and it appeared they would get out of the jam. That brings us to the Dodge YMCA play of the game. On a 0-2 pitch, Damon P. who had earlier tripled hit a long three run HR to left field. The blast gave AW a 9-6 lead. After AW tacked on another run in the bottom of the 6th, BNS made yet another comeback attempt. After back to back singles to lead off the inning by Andrea S. and Chris B., BNS looked to be in good shape. But a strike out by Chris D. and weak fly ball to left by Tony sent the momentum back into AW's corner. The inning would have been over, but Alex (LF) dropped a lazy fly ball. The blunder allowed a run to score and the tying run to come to the plate. After a long battle with multiple foul balls and close pitches taken for balls, Jake hit a line drive to the gap in medium-deep left center field. Alex looking to redeem himself got a good jump on the ball and to a good angle to record the out. The play seemed to take all the life out of BNS. In the top of the seventh AW added five runs and it could have been more, if not for yet another bad call by the umpire on a play at first which allowed BNS to get out of the inning. Down eight runs and without much fight left BNS could only muster a one out single by Stacey in the bottom of the seventh.

These two teams will next hook up on Friday for game two of the series where BNS will look to survive and AW will look to strike the final blow.

THREE STARS:

 Damon P. (AW) 2 for 3, BB, 3B, HR, 2Runs, 3RBI

Chris G. (AW) 1 for 4, 7IP, 13Hits, 7R, 4ER, 3BB, K

Sal B. (AW) 2 for 2, 2BB, HR, 3Runs, 2RBI

The New Mid Summer Classic

On Friday July 18th, the Dodge YMCA's best came together under the lights for some food, beverages, fun, and skills competitions... Oh there was a softball game too.

The evening got off to a roaring start as the "Outfield Assist" competition kicked off the evening. In the event one person from every team took turns throwing from center field at a distance of 175' from home plate. After the competition was complete there were two men (Chris B. of BNS and Rueben C. of Brooklyn Bread) stood tied at the top of the heap. So we went tie breaker. In the tie breaker Chris threw to home with a time of 2.03 seconds for an average speed of 58.77mph. Reuben then stepped up and made two throws. His first came in at 1.75 seconds but was off line. It was his second throw in the overtime session that was good for All-Star gold. The throw was on target and clocked in at 1.86 seconds for an average speed of 64.14mph.

The next event was for the crown of league's "Fastest Man" (or woman). The event featured some of the league's fastest players. The top spot this year went to Josh M. of Dirt Dawgs with a time of 11.06 seconds around the bases for an average speed of 14.79mph. The fast time was just enough to edge out Dillon D. of BNS who clocked in at 11.12 seconds.

The next event to take center stage was the "Lady's Long Ball" event. In the event it was Tara V. of Dirt Dawgs winning a close contest. Tara's distance of 161' was a mere one foot more then the 160' posted by Sarah K. of B61.   For the final skills competition of the evening the men took the field in the men's "Long Ball" competition. This year some of the best sluggers in the league took their cuts. In the end it was Dillon F. driving a long ball to right field at a distance of 290'6". Coming in second was Henry R. of B61 at 260' and third was a surprise as Sammy "da boot" of Angry Wade’s hit a ball 243'.

After the skills competitions were complete the pizza arrived and the game was set to begin. As you may or may not recall, last years game wasn't much of a competition as the West won the game 28-17. Now with the defending league champions leading the way in the East, everyone hoped that there would be a greater contest to be found. It however was not meant to be. Christina M. of Element was able to keep the East off the board for the first two innings, while her offense gave her a six run cushion. In the top of the third the East seemed to find its game as they struck for five runs, cutting the lead to one. The five run outburst seemed to serve as a catalyst for the slumbering giant that was the West. They would score nine runs in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a commanding 23-5 lead. In the sixth, Julia of Angry Wade's now in her second inning of relief allowed two run on four hits and an error cutting the lead to sixteen. After stranding the bases loaded in the sixth the West tacked on two runs in the seventh. For the East there was one more run in the top of the ninth, before James M. of Redhook ended the game on a 5-5-3 double play. The final score was 25-8

In what has become an increasingly competitive league, it was fun to get out under the lights on a warm steamy July evening to play a game for the sole purpose of having fun. On hand for the evening were all three of the league's commissioners from the last thirteen years Steve Medvar, Dave Gardella and Jake Pittar. Also on hand was Dodge YMCA Heath and Wellness coordinator Anne Fosteris.

THREE STARS:

Willie (Stanley Steemers): 5 for 5, 2B, 4Runs, 4RBI

Josh M. (Dirt Dawgs): 4 for 4, Sac-F, 2B, Run, 2RBI

Sammy (Angry Wade's): 4 for 5, 3Runs, RBI

"B" Finals Set
After a long season, the "B" Finals are set. Yesterday's winners will now wait until next Thursday to battle for the "B" crown. For the East it will be long time participants NY Anchors. The Anchors rallied from an early four nothing deficit to tie the game in the sixth inning and eventually take the lead in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning Magnetic Field was able to bring the tying run to the plate with two out, but a pop up to short ended the game and gave the Anchors the win.   Out of the West it will be new comers Massey Knakal. Massey's success has come as a surprise to some people. There sudden six game winning streak to end the regular season and win their first two playoff games comes as no surprise to this reporter. Right from the beginning it seemed that Massey could pitch and play defense. Now they have found their offense and are rolling into the finals on the heels of their 18 - 6 victory over the two time defending "B" Champions Time Served.    Upcoming events include the league's All-star game and skills competition on Friday 7/18 and the start of the playoffs proper on Monday 7/21. The weather and action are heating up.

BNS Team Effort, One Win Away from First Round Home Field Advantage

Last Wednesday BNS took on B61 with playoff births on the line for both clubs.    When the game began BNS wasted no time leaving the gates and getting on the board with five runs in the top of the first. The five run rally was highlighted by five straight two out hits, including doubles by Dave G. and Jake P. After both teams went quietly in the bottom of the first and top of the second, B61 got back to within three with two runs in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third with one out and no one on, Nate M. hit a long fly ball to right-center field that split the outfielders. As Nate (not a fast runner) cruised into third, the third base coached waved him around and sent him home. Nate would subsequently be thrown out by 30ft on a perfect relay by SS Matt to the plate where Henry applied the tag. The ill advised play could have been just what B61 needed to get them jump started and slow the momentum of BNS, but Jake P. stepped in with two outs and hit a long HR to left field. The blast seemed to restore the team's momentum. Now fast forward to the bottom of the fourth. Henry led off the fourth with a single. After a throwing error sent him from first to third, Sarah hit a sac-fly to drive him in, cutting the lead once again to three. In the top of the fifth BNS would tack on another run with the help of a hit, a walk and an error. The score would stay 7-3 until the bottom of the seventh when a B61 leadoff the inning with back to back singles and eventually would scratch out a run on a ground out.    The 7-4 victory assured BNS of making the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season. As for B61 there fate will likely be decided when they take the field this week against Mucho Gusto. They can still make the playoffs if either of the teams trailing them loses their final game.

Three Stars:

Jake P (BNS) 2 for 2, BB, 2B, HR(4), 2Runs, RBI

Aaron R (BNS) 2 for 3, Run, 2RBI

Ron (B61) 2 for 3, 2BI

Season Winding Down and Playoffs Shaping Up.

The Dodge YMCA adult softball league (now in its 13th season) is enjoying its best year in the league’s history. With a record number of participants and teams in 08’, we are looking forward to some thrilling playoff action in 08’ and more league success for years to come. With the season winding down however, I would like at this time to tell you how they stand. Let’s start in the East.

Brooklyn Bread: At 10-0 the team from Brooklyn Bread (BB) has become the class of the league. BB has clinched the Eastern division title and the #1 seed in the 08’playoffs. With a win in their final game next week they will clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs and become only the third team in league history to go undefeated in the regular season, joining only Express Research in 1998 and Smith’s Tavern in 1999. BB currently has an 18-3 record over the last two regular seasons. They have not lost in their last 17 outings, with a six game playoff winning streak and an 11 game regular season unbeaten streak.

Mucho Gusto (7-2-1): Newcomers to the league in 08’, what Mucho Gusto (MG) has lacked in Co-ed softball experience they have made up with talent. After getting off to an unusual start with a tie game in their first outing this season, MG won 6 of their next 7 games to sprint to the second place in the East. With a loss in their last outing dropping their record to 7-2-1, they can still capture the second seed and first round home field advantage with a win in their final game or a loss by third place B61.

B61 (6-3): Currently in third place in the division, B61 is not yet assured of making the playoffs. With two games left against tough opponents (Mucho Gusto and BNS), B61 will need to win one game to assure themselves a playoff birth and secure third in the division. A very important position to be in, as the #3 seed would avoid a first round series with Brooklyn Bread. B61 can still make the playoffs without a win if either of the two teams trailing them in the standings (Magnetic Field and Gallery Bar) loses their final game. B61 also has a statistical chance to finish second in the division. With wins in their final two games and a loss by Mucho Gusto, they would leap frog into second.

Magnetic Field (6-4): Magnetic Field (MF) has already had their most successful season in the team’s short history. After finishing sub .500 in the previous two seasons (4-7 and 3-8), MF will finish with a better then .500 record should they win or lose their final game this year. Currently sitting in the fourth and final playoff position in the division, they still need a win in their final game against Brooklyn Bread to clinch the playoff birth. With a loss that would drop them to 6-5 they would need a loss by Gallery in their final game to make the playoffs.

Gallery Bar (5-5): Currently in fifth place and on the outside looking in, it could be said that Gallery Bar (GB) has a better chance of making the playoffs then Magnetic Field. With a win in their final game against Brazen Head and a loss by Magnetic field their records would be the same at 6-5. As GB defeated MF in the regular season they hold the tie breaker and would move into the 4th and final playoff spot. GB could actually move all the way into third in the division with a win and two losses by B61 as GB holds the tie breaker over them as well.

New York Anchors (3-6-1): One of the longer tenured teams in the league the New York Anchors (NYA) have had a down year in 2008. After playoff appearances in 05’, 06’ and 07’, they are statistically eliminated from the League Championship Playoffs* and are destined for an appearance in the “B” Playoffs** in 08’.

Brooklyn Public Defenders (2-7): Joining the league in 2008 hasn’t been an easy run for Brooklyn Public Defender (BDS). Also know by their sponsor name Brazen Head, BDS has struggled to the 7th position in the east and will certainly be in the “B” Playoffs**. The season highlight can still come for this upstart team as their next game will pit them against Time Served in a rivalry game that has been brewing since the start of the season. How can a team in its first season have a rival you ask? I’ll tell you. Time Served is mostly comprised of the employees from the Brooklyn Legal Aid office. As these agencies do the same job here in Brooklyn, you can understand if there has been a small rivalry brewing.

Royale (2-8): Playing their first full regular season in 2008, Royale had previously gotten a taste of Dodge YMCA softball action in the YMCA’s Fall league in 06’ and 07’. The Fall league eventually folded and Royale joined the summer league roster this year. With the two wins they are guaranteed to not finish in last place and will compete in the “B” Playoffs**.

Eriksen Translations (0-10): Should Eriksen Translations (ET) not pull out a victory in their final game they will go winless for the season. Joining the two most recent winless teams Time Served in 06’ and Dirt Dawgs in 07’ they wouldn’t by any stretch be the first team to go winless. ET will play in the first ever consolation game this year, which pits the last place team in each division against each other for bragging rights. Using time served as an example we hope ET will stick with us and look to improve.

Now that you have seen the Eastern division, let’s move on to the West. The West contains some of the oldest franchises in the league, including two teams that have been in the league from the beginning. If you thought the races were tight in the east, the west is going to boggle your mind… It did mine.

Red Hook (9-0): AKA Fats, the Red Hook (RH) team is a new team to the league this year with many familiar faces. Comprised of some former players from existing teams and neighborhood friends that have been seen viewing games over the years, RH will look to go undefeated in their first season. Having already clinched the #1 seed in west with a win over BNS in their last outing, RH looks to enter the playoffs riding high. With wins in their final two games they will do just that.

Angry Wade’s (7-3): After struggling to a sluggish 3-3 start, Angry Wade’s (AW) has won four straight and has clinched a playoff berth for the seventh consecutive year. AW can lock up the #2 seed and first round home field advantage with a win in their final game and a loss by BNS in either of their two remaining games.

BNS (6-3): The most storied franchise in the Dodge YMCA league, BNS has participated in eight of the last nine consecutive league championship series, while winning seven times. After a brilliant regular season in 07’ losing only one game, they took a quick second round exit at the hands of the eventual champions Brooklyn Bread. Now on the rebound in 08’, BNS has taken a bit of a step back while the rest of the league is taking a step forward. That said at 6-3 they have already clinched a playoff birth and hold tie breakers over Wade’s, Time Served and Element and can move as high as second with wins in their final two games. They can also still slide as low as fourth place if they were to lose their final two games.

Time Served (5-4): Currently in the fourth and final playoff spot, Time Served (TS) has work to do if they want to make the playoffs. The definition of building a franchise from the ground up, TS has worked their way to the brink of their first Championship Playoff* appearance. After going winless in 06’ and 3-8 in 07’, they stand poised to take the next step. Winners of the “B” Playoffs the last two years, this battle tested team needs to win its final game against Element to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot. Up first for TS however is the previously mentioned battle with BDS.

Element (5-5): Currently residing in the fifth spot in the west and on the outside of the playoff picture, Element can secure the fourth and final playoff spot with a win in their final regular season game against Time Served. Bottom line win and they’re in. After falling to Brooklyn Bread in the championship in 07’, Element was hoping to build off of last years success. The year certainly has not gone the way they expected and after an upset loss in their last outing against the previously winless Massey Knakal, nothing less then a final game win will get them in.

Stanley Steemers (5-5) Formerly McMahon’s, O’Keefe’s and The Y’s Guys Stanley Steemers (SS) is the other team that has been in the league since the beginning. They were the league’s fist league champion way back in 1996 as The Y’s Guys. Knowing only two managers over their 13 year career in the league, SS captured the title again in 2003 with a two game sweep of BNS. Now all but statistically eliminated from the 08’ playoffs SS will have to retool and regroup if they are to be competitive in 09’. There is the slimmest of chances for this group to make the playoffs. In order for SS to make the playoffs the following would have to occur: Time Served wins over BDS and loses to Element, while BNS suffers losses to B61 and Zombie Hut. This scenario would give all four teams a 6-5 record. With four teams tied and no clear head-to-head winner, the tie breaker would move to division record. BNS would carry the best division record at 5 - 3 and finish in the third playoff spot. That would leave the other three teams at 4-4 division records, which would move us to the final tie breaker of run differential. It is in this area where SS holds the edge and if they were to maintain this edge they would earn the fourth and final playoff spot. Like I said… Slim.

Dirt Dawgs (3-6): Win or lose in their final two outings, the Dirt Dawgs (DD) have improved over last year’s winless season. Heading toward the “B” playoffs for the third straight year, look for DD to make strides in 09’. They could still fall to the consolation game with losses in their final two games.

Zombie Hut (3-6): In 07’ Zombie Hut (ZH) was the comprised of the talent now found on Brooklyn Bread’s roster. Now reborn with different players, 08’ has been a struggle. But they have locked up the final “B” playoff spot and will look to build upon their moderate success next year.

Massey Knakal (1-8): Don’t let the record fool you. Massey Knakal (MK) is the best 1-8 team I have seen my thirteen year career in the YMCA league. They are a good defensive team and can still make the “B” Playoffs** with wins over beatable opponents in their final two outings. This team in my opinion can definitely take a huge step forward in 09’ if they were to add a couple of big bats to the middle of their line-up.

So there it is; we are just a couple of short weeks from the start of the 08’ playoffs. The action should be intense as the competition level rises and the games start to count.

The Championship Playoffs* begin on July 21st. But before that there is plenty of action to come. The “B” playoffs** will begin on 7/14 and conclude on 7/16. The consolation game between the two last place teams in their respective divisions is on 7/17 and finally the league’s Annual All-Star Game and Skills competition will fit neatly on Friday July, 18th just prior to the beginning of the 2008 Playoffs.

   * Regular League Championship Teams 1-4 in each division play for the league crown.

** “B” Playoffs for teams that finish places 5-8 in their divisions, one game elimination tournament.

Red Hook holds off late charge to remain undefeated.
On Tuesday Red hook (Fats) softball team took the field against BNS. At stake for RH was their undefeated season. For BNS a chance to move one game closer for the division title and an opportunity to put some distance between themselves and their competitors in what has become a very close battle for playoff positioning.   As the visiting team BNS was able to jump out to an early three run lead. After a quiet bottom of the first and top of the second, RH took advantage of some sloppy BNS play (3 errors in the inning) to take a 4-3 lead. After a scoreless third BNS tied the game at four in the fourth on an RBI single by Aaron R. Undaunted, RH would take the lead back in the bottom of the fourth when Mike J. struck a long fly ball to left for a one out two run HR. In the bottom of the fifth RH combined four hits and two more BNS errors to add another two runs. Now trailing by four, BNS plated two on a 2 RBI single by Jake P. in the top of the sixth to cut the gap in half. After working out of a one two on jam in the bottom of the sixth, BNS came up to bat in the seventh looking for the tie. The inning did not get off to an auspicious beginning as the first two batters were retired quickly, but a two out rally was to follow. With two out and Nicole A. on deck, Tim R. worked out a walk. In so drawing the automatic walk for Nicole. BNS then pinch hit for their #11 hitter Andrea with Chris D. Chris didn't disappoint with a single to right center just out of the reach of a sprawling Mike J., Chris drove in one and moved the tying run to third. Up stepped David G. with the tying run on third and two out, Dave worked the count full fighting off several tough pitches. But on a pitch that would have probably been ball four Dave flew out weekly to right field to end the game.   With the 8-7 victory Red hook clinched the western division title and will be the #1 seed in the 2008 western division playoffs. For BNS, at 6-3 on the season they still hold their destiny in their own hands. With wins in their final two games they can secure the #2 seed in the western division playoffs. For Red hook two games remain, including a tough test against the surging Angry Wade's club. Three Stars:

Leonal M. (RH) 2 for 2, BB, 2B, 2 Runs, 3RBI

Mike J. (RH) 1 for 3, HR, Run, 2RBI

Tony C. (BNS) 3 for 3, 2 2B, Run

BNS Doubles Up on Double D.
On Tuesday BNS took on the Dirt Dawgs with both teams looking to extend one game winning streaks. The game was marred by some sloppy play but once again BNS survives it, and comes away with a 14-7 victory.   After surviving a two on no out scare in the top of the first BNS jumped on the gas in the bottom of the inning. After singles by Dave G. and Chris B, Tony C. struck a long line drive ball over the left fielders head. The ball interfered with in left by another team as Tony rounded 2nd and headed for third. As Tony pulled in to third he was awarded home by the umpire who judged that he would have made it had the ball not been touched. Up 3-0 BNS poured it on as they sent to the plate in the first scoring six runs and stranding two more on base. After a 1-2-3 top of the second, BNS added to their commanding lead in the bottom of the inning with three more runs to make it 9-0. In the top of the third the levies broke on what has become a very sloppy BNS defense in 08' as they made four errors that resulted in five unearned runs and saw their lead dwindle to four. On the strength of a Rich B. double and a Dave G. two run homerun BNS extended to an 11-5 lead after three were complete. BNS added two more in the bottom of the fourth and gave up one in the top of the fifth to take a 13-6 lead. Both teams would tack on runs in the sixth, giving us the final score 14-7.   Now standing at 6-2 and in sole position of second place in the west, BNS next will face the undefeated leaders of the western division Redhook (AKA Fats). For the Dawgs is a meeting with Angry Wade's who are coming off a controversial forfeit win over Time Served. Three Stars: Aaron R. (BNS) 3 for 3, BB, 2Runs, 3RBI Chris B. (BNS) 4 for 4, 2Runs Dave M. (DD) 2 for 2, BB, 2Runs, 2RBI

Element Survives the Elements and Steemers!
Element's pitching & defense returns. Monday's win over Stanley Steemers was a great team win, punctuated by Ryan's circus catch in a swirling Giants Stadium like winds in center field. Christina pitched 5 strong innings before giving way to Tito who closed it out for his first save of the season and a 7-5 final.

BNS Wins Ugly Contest over Time Served
Dillon F. Rounders 07'
Dillon Powers BNS Attack

On Tuesday 6/10 BNS took the field against Time Served. Looking to bounce back from an 11 - 2 defeat the prior week at the hands of BK Bread. Time Served entered the game with a 4-2 record and in a tie for the 4th and final playoff spot in the west.
In the first inning BNS wasted no time as the first four batters would reach base. The mini rally was punctuated by a three run HR by Dillon F. giving BNS a 1st inning 4-0. After putting Time Served down quickly in the bottom of the first, BNS blew the game open in the top of the second with a six run outburst.
In the bottom of the second Time Served cracked the scoring column with a three run barrage. Now with a score of 10-3 after two, it seemed like Time Served was going to make a game of it. Specifically after a five run burst in the bottom of the fifth that staved off the mercy victory. However, BNS would tack on two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings for a total of 16 on the day. Time Served added one run in the bottom of the seventh but could not get any closer then the 16-10 final. On the day the two teams combined for 13 errors and 27 hits.
With the win BNS now stands at 5-2 and is in soul possession of second place in the western division. For time served they sit at 4-3 and are in a three way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the west.

Three Stars:

Dillon F. (BNS) 3 for 4, 2HR, 3Runs, 6RBI

Tony C. (BNS) 3 for 4, 2B, 2Runs, 3RBI

Steemers, Steam Roll NY Anchors
Steemers pitch and slug their way to a 14-2 mercy win. Joe S. from Steemers got the offense started early with a first inning three run HR. At the time they had no way of knowing it but that would be all the offense the Steemers would need as Joe also pitched an outstanding game allowing only one run through four innings and two runs in the contest. The game ended on an RBI single by Lisa that drove in the 14th run giving the Steemers the 12 run mercy victory. The ball game was also marked by some other stand out performences:
Ken (SS) 3 for 4, 3RBI
AJ (SS) 4 for 4
Kim (SS) 2 for 3.

BNS Bounces Back, Blasts Element!!!

On Monday, BNS took the field against division rival Element. BNS entered the game three and one and coming off of their worst regular season defeat in the team’s thirteen year history. Element came in off a loss as well with a 1-2 record.

When the game started BNS wasted no time getting started as they scored four runs in the top of the first. After facing the minimum in the bottom of the inning, BNS would tack on one in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Up by five BNS starting pitcher Chris D. worked his way through a two on one out jam. In the fifth inning the flood gates opened as BNS would break it open, sending 15 batters to the plate for nine hits and 12 runs. Included in the nine hits were doubles by Tim R. and Joey S. and triples by Dillon, Aaron and Nate. With a 17-0 in hand BNS never looked back. They would cap the scoring with four more runs in the fourth. After an RBI double by Chris B., Jake stepped up with two on and two out and hit a long three run homer to dead center field.

Lost in the 21-0 offensive outburst was the 6 hit no run bounce back pitching performance by Chris D.

Next up for BNS is a non divisional game with B61. For Element at 1-3 it is an early season must win against the always tough Gallery bar.

Three Stars:

Nate M. (BNS) 3 for 3, 3B, 3Runs, 4RBI

Dillon F. (BNS) 2B, 3B, 3Runs, 2RBI

NOTES: BNS used female exemption in the game… It was their first.

Steemers, Steam Roll BNS!!!

On Tuesday the two longest tenured teams in the Dodge YMCA took the field to continue a rivalry that can only be described as Yankees Red Soxesque. Although both of these teams have gone through some changes over thirteen seasons, their lineage can be traced back to the beginning. Having met in the playoffs on multiple occasions including three times in the championship, these teams know each other and there is always just a little bit extra that goes into these games.

The Steemers didn't waste any time jumping on BNS mistakes in the first inning. Capitalizing on errors at short and third to open the game, the Steemers stormed out to an early 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the first BNS would get a measure of revenge as Dillon F. hit a long drive to right for a three run HR. Undaunted by the big blast, the Steemers added one in the fourth on a long HR to center by Mike and five more in the third. Unable to answer BNS fell to a 10-3 deficit. In the fourth the Steemers added three more and BNS rallied for one. Down by nine, BNS saw their chances slipping away, but in the fifth they would find a spark. After three singles to lead off the inning, Dillon would step to the plate with the bases loaded. And in the [turning point of the game] he hit a screaming line drive up the middle that Joe S. (Steemers pitcher and Manager) was able to snag n self defense, and with a quick throw to second was able to turn a double play. BNS would go on to score two in the inning, but the great play saved at least two runs and recorded two outs to effectively short circuit the inning. In the sixth BNS tried to ride the momentum of the turning tide, outscoring the Steemers 4-2 in the inning to draw to within five runs. The Steemers however were up to the task as they put up five runs in the top of the seventh, kicked off by clutch two out single by Lisa. The five run outburst would be enough to discourage any comeback by BNS. BNS would add a run in the seventh but fall short of any comeback with the final score of 20-11. The near mercy is the worst defeat in the thirteen year history of the BNS franchise.

Three Stars:

Tom (SS) - 5 for 5 2 2B, HR, 3Runs, 6RBI

Mike (SS) - 4 for 4, HR, 2Runs, 2RBI

BNS Outlasts Angry Wade's in Wild Shoot Out

On Monday BNS and Angry Wade's took the field in a rivalry that goes back eight years to Wade's first two seasons in the league. In 2000 and 2001 Wade's and BNS would meet in the Championship round of the playoff, BNS winning both those meetings.   Members of both teams older and wiser these days, the rivalry has taken a far friendlier tone and had less vinegar, but plenty of competitive fire still exists. Both teams scored early and often in this one as BNS would out slug Wade's 23 - 17 in a wild affair. To go with the 40 runs the teams also managed 53 combined hits, a new league record for a game. The 40 runs is the highest total in a game in two seasons. BNS and the Dirt Dawgs combined for 48 in the summer of 06' only to have the feat repeated in the championship series by BNS and Lobo when they also combined for 48.   As for this game, Wade's jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first. BNS struck back in the second to take an 8-5 lead. In the bottom of the inning Wade's tied the game at 8 a piece. With four in the third and three in the fourth BNS looked like the might run away with it, but Wade's got right back into the game with six in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to one at 15-14. In the fifth BNS would get five more runs to reach the 20 run plateau for the first time since the previously mentioned championship game against Lobo where they scored 33. After Wade’s added 2 in the sixth, BNS got them right back with three in the top of the seventh to take a commanding 23-16 lead. Wade's would tack on one in the bottom of the seventh, but with the sun setting a final line drive to short would end the memorable game.   This game had many great performances, but the key to victory on this day falls squarely on the shoulders of the BNS 7-10 hitters who combined to go 10 for 15 (.667) with 5BB 9Runs and 6RBI.

THREE STARS:

BNS - Stacey P. 5 for 5, 2Runs, 2RBI

BNS - Dillon F. 5 for 6, 2B, 3B, 3Runs, 4RBI

AW  - Mike (SS) 3 for 4, 2B, 2HR, 4Runs, 4RBI

BNS Comes From Behind to Survive Early Test!
On Wednesday BNS and Gallery (GAL) took the field in an early season test for both teams. The game was marred by bad umpiring, bad play and bad blood. The sun would set however, with BNS pulling out an important win on the heels of some clutch hitting by new faces and old.   Top 1st: after a leadoff fly out to center, Gallery's next seven batters reached base safely to take an early 5-0 lead. BNS put up just one in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to four. From there, neither team would score a run until the fourth.   TOP 4th: Gallery tacked on a run with two singles and a fielder’s choice sandwiched in between. The bottom or the fourth would however be the game's [turning point]. After a leadoff walk by Chris B., Brendan B. (SS) hit a towering fly ball to right field for a two run homer, cutting the lead to three. After a Jake P. fly out BNS wouldn't quit. Dillon F. stepped in and laced a double down the right field line that the Gallery RF misplayed for another two bases cutting the lead again down to two. The next three batters for BNS would reach base with a single by Nate a walk by Aaron and an RBI single by Tim R. Liz M. then stepped in and hit a sharp ground ball to short. As Liz hustled down the line the runner at third was caught too far off the base resulting in a 6-2 put out at home of Aaron. Now wanting to see the opportunity slip away, BNS manager Jake P. pinch hit Mark S. for Sister Andrea, and Mark would deliver. After putting a slow roller in play Mark showed off some impressive speed to rush the defense that would not even make a throw. With bases loaded the versatile Joey S. stepped up and delivered with a line drive double down the left field line, driving in two and giving BNS their first lead of the day.   Top 5th: BNS reliever Rich B. would prove unable hold the one run lead as Gallery continued to dink and dunk for another run, knotting the game at seven. Gallery would not have to wait long for a response as in the bottom of the inning BNS would plate one of their own to take the lead for good at 8-7.    Bottom 6th: The bottom of the BNS order would come through with two outs in a big way. After a fly out by Nate and ground out by Aaron, BNS' next six batters would reach safely. Back to back singles by Tim and Liz got the action started. A walk by Lindsay would follow. With he bases loaded Joey S. delivers again with and RBI single to left. Next up Ellen P. Making her first appearance since giving birth to her second child at the end of the 07' season, Ellen ripped an RBI single over a leaping Gallery 3rd basemen. Chris B., batting lead off would drive in the BNS' final run with an RBN single to center. Brendan flew out to RCF to end the inning. But the damage was done to the tune of three two out runs to take am 11-7 lead.   Top 7th: Gallery (never ones to go quietly) scratched out another run and was able to bring the tying run to the plate with two on and two out. Their clean-up hitter ripped a line drive that seemed destined for center field, but the missile was snagged by a leaping Brendan B. who used his entire 6'3" frame to make a snow cone catch and end the contest.   As previously stated, the game was marred by some ugly umpiring, resulting in two bad calls and tempers fairing. To the umpire's credit he correctly called a BNS runner out for leading before a pitch. BNS manager Jake P. protested the play and the game continued. With the BNS victory BNS withdrew the protest. And in a statistical oddity Gallery banged out 18 hits in the game ALL SINGLES!!! Three Stars:Chris B. (BNS) 2 for 2, 2 BB, 3Runs, RBIJoey S. (BNS) 2 for 3, 2B, 3RBITim R. Undermanned, BNS Reserves Rise to the Challenge
Jake Swing
Jake Puts the "P" in Power.

Playing with four women in the field, missing six starters and using three people out of position, BNS was ripe for an opening day upset loss. Massey Knakal (MK) playing in their first summer league game with the YMCA came to play and was up for the challenge. Led by their team captain and starting pitcher (the lovely Jaime P.), MK battled the seven time YMCA champs for seven innings and didn't give an inch.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, BNS looked primed to have a big day as their first three hitters reached base safely. Including an RBI double by emergency center fielder Joey S. MK then got their feet under them and shut down any potential big inning by recording three outs in the next two batters with a fielders choice and a line drive double started by Jaime P.
In the top of the second, Giordano cashed in an RBI double after a lead-off triple by Aschley. BNS would record the next three outs without the runner advancing to escape the innning with a 1-1 tie.
The tie was unbroken in the fourth when BNS team captain Jake P. hit a lead-off solo HR to left field. BNS added a single in the inning as well but would not score any more.
In the top of the sixth still leading 2-1, BNS feeling uneasy about the one run lead felt they needed more runs. And once again thanks to the captain Jake P. runs would be deliverd. After a Joey S. reached first on what can only be described as a swinging bunt, Jake painted a line drive down the left field line that would get past the out fielder who had been playing off the line. The two run HR was Jake's second on the day and gave him three RBI's. MK would manufacture a run in the top of the seventh but never got any closer then 4-2.
There was some stellar defense played in the game by both teams. MK turned two double plays in the game and made no errors. There were running catches made by Joey S. and Liz M. for BNS. An outfield assist for BNS left fielder Chris B., as he through a runner out trying to go first to third on a single. And finally a stellar game by pitching performence by Rich B. who walked none and allowed just five hits.

Three Stars:
Jake P. (BNS) 2 for 3, 2 HR, 2Runs, 3RBI
Joey S. (BNS) 2 for 3, Run, RBI
Aschley (MK) 2 for 3, 3B, 2Runs

The NEW CHAMPS! Have Arrived
On Wednesday Zombie Hut (ZH) Defeated Element by a 14-4 tally, in doing so they complete the championship sweep and a perfect playoff run. They are officially 2007 Dodge YMCA Adult Softball League Champions. ZH becomes only the third team in the last nine seasons to hoist the championship trophy, joining Brooklyn Net Sellers and McMahon's. ZH did most of their damage on offense this season and in the playoffs. But on those rare days when the "O" failed them, their Defense was usually up to the task. A complete team with pitching, hitting and defense... They will be tough to beat in years to come.    Thanks again for everyone who made the season great. I hope to see you all in the Fall and in 2008. Jake P.

McMahon's Bounces Back to take Game 2!
On Friday BNS and McMahon's took to the field in the second game of their western division playoff series. BNS entered the game winners of their last eleven and looking to close out the first round. But with their backs against the wall, McMahon's came to play... And play they did.
BNS got out to an early lead in the top of the first when Dave G. hit a two out solo HR to right field. For BNS neither the good vibes nor the lead would last long. In the bottom of the inning Brandon leadoff for McMahon's. He hit what appeared to be a harmless single to left field, but an error by Mike J. that allowed the ball to roll past him let Brandon come all the way around to score. With the score knotted at one the next two batters (Ken and John) hit back-to-back singles. After a misplayed ball by Chris B. in right field allowed the runners to advance to second and third, Stacy H. hit a two run double to left-center. Stacy would eventually score on a single by Pete; McMahon's taking a four to one lead after one inning. BNS would have chances throughout the game. After working around a leadoff single in the second, Joe S. would do his best work in the third to thwart BNS' comeback attempt. In the inning BNS got back-to-back leadoff singles by Rich B. and Lindsay K. (the last two batters in the order) but Joe got a line drive out to second base by Mike J. So with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and BNS' hottest hitter Chris B. at the plate we get the turning point of the game. Chris hit a hard ground ball that was headed for the hole between first and second, but the ball made contact with BNS base runner Lindsay, resulting in an out. Joe would then induce a pop out to first by Dave. Chris D. did his best to keep the game close retiring the side in order in the second and third innings. In the top of the fourth BNS got a spark when Jake P. hit a one out single to left. Jake would go from first to third when the next batter Aaron R. singled up the middle. With runners on first and third BNS had life. But Tim R. could only manage a sac-fly to the right-center fielder. With two out and a run in Joe induced a pop up to short by the next batter, Liz M. In the bottom of the fourth McMahon's added a run to regain their three run cushion at 5-2. After a ground out to third, Pete stepped in for McMahon's. Pete hit a hard line drive down the third base line. Jake playing third for BNS left his feet in an attempt to snag the rocket. Jake could only get a portion of his glove on the ball. The play slowed the ball down enough to allow Pete to pull into second with a one out double. After another grounder to third for the second out. Nick stepped in and hit a hard line drive to the right of BNS SS Tony C. Like Jake earlier, Tony could only get the tip of his glove on the ball and Pete was able to score from second. The score remained the same until the top of the sixth when with a runner on first and one out, John Q came up a bit short on a diving attempt to snag a line drive off the bat of Jake. The attempt by John knocked the ball away from center fielder Brandon, resulting in an RBI double for Jake. But as Joe had done in previous innings, he shut down the surge and escaped with a two run lead. In the bottom of the inning McMahon's capitalized on BNS' third error of the day to once again regain a three run advantage at 6-3. Joe would work around a two out single in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Game Notes: In the game BNS used their only playoff female exemption. Although BNS out hit McMahon's 12-9, Joe S. did a great job of scattering those hits and stranding runners. BNS left runners on base in every inning for a total of eight on the day.
The win is McMahon's first playoff win in their last six tries. For BNS it is their first playoff loss in their last eleven games, dating back to the second round of the 2005 playoffs. These two teams will get together again on Thursday to decide who moves on. JP.

BNS Out Duels McMahon's to take Playoff Series Opener
Equipment Check
Chris D. (foreground) scatters five hits and one run in playoff opener.
On Tuesday BNS and McMahon's took the field to open the western division playoffs. BNS finished the regular season on a 10 game winning streak and played host to the 6-5 McMahon's. The series continues a rivalry that has spanned over a decade. With both teams having ties to the creation of the league, theses two teams are the longest tenured teams in the league. McMahon's who now go by the name of Stanley Steamers were once known as the Park Slope Sports Club and prior to that were the Y's Guys way back in 1996. For BNS it is common knowledge that they started as Annie's Blue Moon before becoming Smith's Tavern and finally Brooklyn Net Sellers. In 2003 McMahon's defeated BNS in the League Championship Series. In doing so they became the only team other then BNS to win the YMCA title in the last eight years. In 2005 the two clubs met in the championship with BNS avenging the loss from 2003.
With so much history these two teams don't really have many tricks for each other and it showed in game one. McMahon's got things rolling in the first with a two out rally started by a John Q. double and finished with an RBI single by Stacy H. In the bottom of the inning, BNS answered the bell with a Sac-fly by SS Tony C. The score stayed the same until the fourth inning where McMahon's would threaten by getting the first two runners on with the 4-5-6 batters due up. But BNS' Chris D. induced two fly ball outs to left field. Now with two out McMahon's pitcher and team captain Joe S. stepped up to the plate, and like he has done so many times before hit a long fly ball to right field. The ball looked like it was destined to split the outfielders for extra bases, but right fielder Elizabeth M. was Johnny err... Lizzy on the spot and cut down the angle and made a terrific back peddling catch to save the inning and possibly the game. In the bottom of the sixth clutch hitting by Chris B. and Dave G. coupled with terrific base running by Mike J. manufactured one run. With two out and no one on, Chris B. hit a line drive single to center field. BNS used a courtesy runner for Chris in the form of Mike J. With one of the league's fastest players on first, Dave G. hit a line drive single to right-center field. The presence of Mike's speed caused the defense to rush, first bobbling the ball then making a weak throw to the cutoff man, allowing Mike to score. In the top of the seventh Chris D. worked around a close play at first that went BNS' way and a two out single to seal the victory and take a 1-0 series lead.
GAME NOTES: The game was played in just 41 minutes. It is the quickest complete game in the league's twelve year history. The 2-1 final score is the lowest run out put for two teams in the league's history as well. There has been only one other 2-1 game, last time being a 2-1 win by BNS (then Smith's Tavern) over Cuzins in 2000. That game took nine innings to complete. BNS is now 4-0 in games where less then five runs are scored. Chris D. allowed just two hits after the second inning and retired eleven in a row from the fourth inning until a two out single in the seventh inning. BNS has now won 11 straight games including the regular season, 10 straight playoff games dating back to 2005 and 24 of their last 25 games over all dating back to week five of the 2006 season. For McMahon's the game one loss is their sixth loss in 2007 and their fifth consecutive playoff loss dating back to 2005.
These two teams are scheduled to meet again on Friday with BNS hoping to end the series and McMahon's looking to push it to a game three that would take place on Thursday 8/2. JP

The Moon, Lights and Stars Shine Bright!
Last Friday the Dodge YMCA Adult Softball League hosted its semiannual All-Star game. I say semiannual because although the event has been scheduled every year for the last ten years, it has been somewhat cursed and has only been played to its completion about five times. As the event is usually scheduled for a Friday night in July it has been plagued by thunderstorms just about every other year. And then there was the time in 2001 that the ball field lights didn’t come on. And finally there was the game in 2005 where only fifteen players showed up and it turned into a pick-up game with neighborhood kids used to supplement the weak numbers. So when Friday’s forecast which originally called for rain took a dramatic change for the better, it was a welcome and rare surprise.
With plenty of participants and perfect weather the festivities kicked off with an All-Star skills competition, with events such as a long ball competition, fastest person and outfield throwing accuracy. The first event was the outfield accuracy competition. Competitors started at a distance of 175’ from home plate and got two chances to make there best throw to home. They were judged on velocity and accuracy. The event was won by Josh Miller of the Dirt Dawgs who threw a one hop strike that landed right in the strike zone and was clocked at 2.13 seconds. The win would be the start of a big day for Miller, more on that later. In the second event competitors ran one lap around the bases with the win going to the fastest time. In the event Brandon Chiarello of McMahon’s barely edged out Mike Jones of BNS by seven hundredths of a second with a time of 11.62 seconds. In the victory Brandon and Mike averaged nearly 14 MPH. In the third and final event there was a long distance hitting competition with a men’s and women’s division. In the men’s competition Gideon Schultz of Magnetic field edged out Jeff Weidman of Element with a long fly of 267.5 feet. On the women’s side it was a close contest until Tasja Kirkwood of Zombie Hut stepped in and smashed a ball well over 150’ and obliterated the competition.
So with the skills competitions out of the way the best in the east and west took to the field. The field was beautifully manicured by Dodge YMCA head grounds keeper Guillo Onna, the lights were on and the pizza had arrived. The pizza was catered by Vinny’s Pizzeria on Court Street between 3rd and 4th place in Brooklyn. Add to that the perfect weather and it was no surprise that every one in attendance was in high spirits. Although the first inning was played evenly with neither team able to plate a run, the game for the most part was dominated by the western stars. Managed by BNS captain and league Commissioner Jake Pittari the west took a second inning lead and never looked back. On the strength of a lead off HR by Josh Miller the west jumped out to a one nothing lead. Later in the inning Mike Pate of Time Served would later score on an error to go up two nothing. The East would get chance to get back in the game in the top of the third as they plated an unearned run, to pull to within one. The run was the only run allowed by Rich Benner of BNS. Little did the east know that would be the last time the score was close. In the bottom of the third the western stars would score seven runs to take a 9-1 lead. In the fourth Joe Slav of McMahon’s picked up the pitching where Rich left off. The scoreless inning gave the west an opportunity to tack on runs with five more in the bottom of the inning. The burst was highlighted by a three run HR by Josh Miller, his second of the day. Now down 14-1 the east finally broke through in the top of the fifth with a seven run outburst. In the inning there were seven hits (including five doubles) and three errors. And although the defense was shaky the west offense didn’t disappoint as they quickly scored five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to go back up by eleven. Joe would settle down in the sixth and retire the side without incident. In the seventh inning Nicole D’Orazio of Time Served took over the pitching duties looking for the save. And she gave up just five runs in her three innings of work to do just that. The western stars would go on to score one run in the seventh and six more in the eighth. In the end the west doubled up the east to the tune of 26-13. Josh Miller went 4 for 5 with a double, two homeruns, four runs scored, 4 RBI and was named the All-Star game MVP. On the defensive side of the ledger, the play of the day was turned in by east starting pitcher Christina Morris of Element. In the top of the first, in an act of self defense Christina snagged an absolute missile of line drive headed for her face. The momentum of the play knocked her down but even the contact with the ground couldn’t knock the ball loose. She was rewarded with a standing ovation by both teams.

WP Rich Benner (BNS)
LP Christina Morris (Element)
S Nicole D’Orazio (Time Served)

MVP Josh Miller (Dirt Dawgs)

BNS Tops Time Served, Finish Regular Season 10-1
On Tuesday BNS took on Time Served (TS) in a game to finish out the string. Having defeated Zombie Hut t the previous week and by doing so clinching the western division title, BNS didn’t have much incentive to show up. But as is the case with the perennial contender, if there is a game on the schedule they will be there. For TS the game didn’t hold much consequence either. Already locked in to the fifth spot in the west TS had only pride and the chance of toppling the league’s best team to play for.
As the visiting team TS didn’t waste any time making a statement. Propelled by three consecutive singles by their first three batters, TS took advantage of some shoddy defense by BNS and scored the first three runs of the game. Like most good teams will do BNS took their lumps and fired back in the bottom of the first inning with four runs of their own. Included in the barrage were doubles by Mike J, Tony C, and Leonal M. After retiring the side in order in the top of the second, BNS struck again in the bottom of the second inning. With two out and no one on BNS strung together back-to-back walks and then back-to-back singles to plate three more runs. TS would battle back in the third with two runs in their half of the third inning to pull to with in two. In the bottom of the third BNS took advantage of an error to tack on a run and stretch the lead to 8-5. The score would remain the same until the top of the fifth where TS would put together three consecutive hits with two outs to add a run and pull to within two at 8-6. Now up by two BNS finally got the offense in gear. Over the next two innings they would have 12 of the next 17 batters reach base with hits resulting in 10 runs and an 18 – 6 mercy.
The win marked the 10th win of the season for BNS, giving them the league’s best record and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Up next for the three time defending champs is an opening round playoff match with either Angry Wade’s or McMahon’s. If it is Wade’s it will mark the fourth time in the past six years these two squads will have met in the playoffs. As for McMahon’s, they are the only team to defeat BNS in the playoffs in the last eight years, winning the championship in 2003. Either series would be entertaining. For Time Served they head into the “B” playoffs for the second straight year. In 2006 Time Served took a winless record into the post season and won the two straight to capture the first ever “B” playoff title.

Anchors’ Tide on the Rise, Wade’s Ship Sinking
On Monday the Anchors (NYA) took on Angry Wade’s (AW). Already locked in as the fourth seed in the eastern division, NYA played fast and loose, and it showed up in the final score as they came away with a 22-2 victory. Powered by six homeruns, a barrage of hits (singles, doubles and triples), nine errors by their opponents and a four inning, four hit, no run performance by ace pitcher Dom L., the NYA crew seem ready for the playoffs. NYA scored early and often with five runs in the first, five in the third, three in the fourth and finally nine in the fifth. Now leading 22-0 relief pitch Colin G. entered the game and allowed just two unearned runs to close out the victory. A big inning was squashed in the final frame as Colin recorded a strikeout and a runner was cut down at second base on a strike from the outfield.
Notable players for the Anchors were Paul J, Dom L, Michael, and Roger W. who all hit homeruns, Roger hit two.
A full sail victory for the Anchors, the final score was the biggest margin of victory in the team’s seven year history. Up next for NYA hopefully a smooth cruise in the playoffs but we know that won't be such an easy task especially with one Element in the way. For Wade’s the outlook is not so bright. They have had personnel problems all year and have even forfeited a game. They now wait to find out who they will play in the playoffs. If McMahon’s wins their game on Friday against B61, Wade’s will be the fourth seed and face BNS. If McMahon’s loses they will be the fourth seed.

How the West was Won
Chris D COTY
Chris D. (left) seen here with Jake P. in 2002 is brilliant in 3-2 win.
On Tuesday July 3rd, one day shy of Independence Day, Brooklyn Net Sellers (BNS) and Zombie Hut (ZH) geared up for battle to decide the best in the west. A win for BNS would clinch the top spot. For ZH they would need to win the game and their final game to get the nod. So with both teams holding their fate in their own hands and a clear sunny sky the battle field was set.
When the game began it became clear that pitching and defense would rule the day. In the top of the first, after the first two batters were retired, ZH left fielder Joe D. knocked a single to center. But was stranded there when clean-up hitter and first basemen June hit a long fly ball to center that was handled by Jake P. The bottom of the first was similar for BNS. With one out Chris B. knocked an opposite field single to left, but made it no further as ZH retired the next two batters without incident. In the second ZH pitcher Dean hit a shallow fly ball to right-center field. RCF Mike J. made a diving effort but came up short. In the attempt Mike made contact with the ball knocking it towards center. Jake [who was backing up on the play] was able to chase it down but the damage was done and dean pulled into third with a triple. The next batter Jamal drove the ball through the infield for an RBI single, putting ZH in front 1-0. The ZH rally was short lived as the next batter Andrea lined to third where Timmy R. handled the ball cleanly and through behind Jamal at first for a 5-3 double play. After BNS went quietly in the second, ZH was threatening again in the top of the third. With two out and runners on first and third ZH hard hitting SS Dustin lined out to Tim at third to end the threat. The score stayed the same until the bottom of the fourth when with two out and a runner on first BNS SS Tony C. drove a ball between the left fielder and center fielder for a two run HR giving BNS the 2-1 lead. The pitching of Dean for ZH and Chris D. for BNS retired the next fourteen batters in a row (7 each) taking the game into the top of the seventh. In the top of the seventh with one out ZH SS Dustin drove a single to center. The next batter Joe drove a ball to center field for the second out. Dustin tagging on the play was able to make it to second uncontested as center fielder Jake could not get the ball out of his glove cleanly. The play would pay off for ZH as the next batter June drove a ball to short left field for an RBI single. When BNS LF Chris B. didn't handle the ball cleanly resulting in the game's lone error June was able to make it to second without a throw. BNS took the opportunity to intentionally walk Dean (ZH lone left handed hitter) and take on the less speedy right hander Jamal. The move paid off as Jamal grounded out to short to end the inning knotted at two. In the bottom of the seventh pinch hitter Lionel M. flew out to short to lead off the inning. That brought Mike J. to the dish. MJ worked the count full, just as he had done in his previous two at bats. On the payoff pitch he hit a shallow fly ball to left field that dropped in. As MJ is one of the fastest athletes in the league he was able to cruise into second uncontested for a one out double. Chris B. then stepped in and drove a ball to center, putting runners at first and third. After an intentional walk to load the bases, BNS EH Pete M. stepped in and on a 2-2 pitch drove a shallow fly ball to left field. Joe D. made the catch but was unable to keep the speedy MJ from scoring. Mike crossed the plate with the ball right behind him, giving BNS the 3-2 victory.
Both pitchers were brilliant in this game as well as the defense for both teams. A particular nod goes to BNS pitcher Chris D. who scattered eight hits and held ZH to just two earned runs. The Zombies entered the contest the leagues best offense scoring an average of 13.88 runs per game.
The win gives the BNS crew their first division title since 2003. A win in their final game against Time Served will assure them the best overall record in the league and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. For Zombie Hut they have clinched the second seed in the west. However, having lost their last two they will play their final game against the always tough Element and try to right the ship before the playoffs begin.

Anchors Topple CAPC in route to Securing Playoff Bid
The NY Anchors (NYA) TKO CAPC 11 to 1 in route to securing the 4th and final playoff spot in the east. If not early, the fireworks came often for the anchors. After playing to an early 1-1 tie for the first three innings with the threat of rain on the horizon, the Anchor's offense exploded in the fourth inning and didn't let up from that point on. With a seemingly never ending barrage of hits, some CAPC errors and two monster homeruns by Anchors' left fielder Godzilla (Paul J.) the Anchors coasted to an easy win. To add to CAPC's woes their bats were held in check by star spangled pitcher and NYA ace Dom L. who recorded three K's in the game. Some of the other key plays in the NYA victory came from people playing out of position. Pete at third played the hot corner like an old pro and Paul in left made a couple of great catches in foul territory contending with the ever present fence and diving for two more balls. CAPC undaunted by the NYA effort kept coming and threatened a couple of times, but were never able to make a dent in the NYA lead.
On a more somber note the anchors right-center fielder Paul Isolano's father past away last week from a rare disease at age 56. Paul proudly wore his father's gold anchor medallion in the game. With a couple of hits of his own and a team victory, the Anchors dedicated the game to Paul's dad and salute him on his way to Graceland.
With the win, the previously underachieving Anchors will get a long awaited rematch with their first round playoff opponent from last season Element (then Schnack). Schnack quickly dispatched the NYA crew in a two game sweep. However, sportsmanship did not rein supreme and there were hard feelings left behind due to some strategic rules applications by Schnack. Now a year later the Anchors have a chance to serve a nice cold dish of revenge.

BNS Defeats Magnetic Field, Fields Playoff Hopes Fading.
On Tuesday BNS and Magnetic Field (MF) took the field in a must win for MF. Standing in their way was a red hot BNS team that has hopes of a division title on their minds.
Although it was quite possibly the biggest game of the year for MF, a couple of players didn't show for them and they were forced to play with four women in the field. Although disappointed about the circumstances, team captain Will wouldn't let his team get down and led his club to a late game rally that came up a bit short, giving BNS the 6-4 win.
BNS had scored 23 first inning runs in eight games entering Tuesday's contest so when they started the first inning with two runs as the visiting team, it was to on one's surprise. After holding MF scoreless in the bottom of the inning, Leonel M. led off the second with a long solo HR to left field to stretch the lead to three. In the third BNS struck again. After Dave G. lead off with a double and advanced to third on a fielding error, Chris B. would plate him with an opposite field RBI single. The score stayed the same until the bottom of the 4th when MF finally broke through. After the first two batters were retired, E.J. singled up the middle. When he made a wide turn at first BNS centerfielder Dave G. made an errant throw behind the runner that ended up in the dugout. After being awarded two bases on the throw E.J. scored on a two out RBI single by Jack. The next batter popped out to Stacey P. at second base. In the top of the fifth BNS fired back quickly when with one out and the bases loaded Tony C. hit an RBI single to left. Jake P. would follow with and RBI double that could have been more, but an excellent throw by MF leftfielder, Matt cut down Chris B. at home. MF minimized the damage by retiring BNS number five hitter Tim R. on a fly ball to center. The score stayed 6-1 until MF made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth. After short stop Skippy lead off with a single and advanced to second on a fly ball to center, Matt stepped up to the plate and hit a long fly ball to left center for a two-run HR. The next batter, Gideon followed in kind to right center field to quickly pull to within two runs. BNS retired two of the next three batters to get out of the inning. In the seventh BNS had an opportunity to break the game open, but with the bases loaded and two out Jake hit a long lazy fly ball to left to end the threat. Facing the bottom of the order in the seventh BNS quickly recorded two outs. But a shallow fly ball to left field was dropped by Mike J. to the tune of three bases. But with the tying run on third Skippy lined hard to third where Tim R. was waiting and ended the threat and the game.
Although they fought hard MF came up a bit short. They now need some help in their playoff quest. For BNS they avoid what can only be described as a trap game where they were a little flat and were possibly looking ahead to a date with division rival Zombie Hut. The game to be played next Tuesday will lead us into the Independence Day holiday and also decide the regular season Western Division Champion.

Anchors Repel Magnetic's Field
Neither rain nor sleet nor stormy night could keep the Anchors from a clear sail and victory over Magnetic Field. Making it through two innings of driving rain the force would be with the Anchors on this day. But first with errorless plays and one run scored from Magnetic field took an early lead at the top of the third inning. Although It looked like these two playoff bubble teams might play a close contest, the lead would be short lived and the only one in the game for the Magnetic field crew. Because unknown to Magnetic Field another storm was brewing and it wasn't rain. It was the Anchor's bats coming to life and producing 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. With the score at 4 to 1, strong pitching from Anchor's starter Dom and great defensive plays in the field, the Anchors continued to de-polarize Magnetic Field. In the bottom of the sixth inning the anchors with well placed hits and keen base running took advantage of some Mag. Field errors were able to tack on 7 more runs. Now with the score 11 to 1 and a non-save situation relief pitcher Colin entered the game. After taking the wet ball, Colin proceeded to get himself into some immediate trouble. After one walk, one hit and a couple of errors Mag. Field plated two more runs. Colin would eventually settle down and manage to induce a couple of ground outs and an inning ending pop up to Ivan to end the threat.
Up next for Magnetic Field their quest for a playoff birth gets a bit tougher as they have a date with BNS. For the Anchors one more huge game with CAPC which won't be easy. A win over CAPC might well cement the Anchors playoff birth. Although making the playoff in the fourth spot in the East won’t be any treat as another storm in the form of Element awaits that lucky team…….

Steamers Busts out at the Shooting Gallery
After what has been a season long slumber, someone woke up the McMahon's offense as they slug there way to a 18-13 victory. In the game there were some lofty numbers posted by the McMahon's crew. Joe s. 5 for 5 with 4RBI, John Q 5 for 5 with a 2 run HR ,Ken M.3-4, Brandon C. 4-5 with a solo HR.

BNS Mercies Dawgs.
Jake Adrift
Jake P. Steers the BNS Ship Toward another Title Run.
On Wednesday BNS took on the Dirt Dawgs in a regular season match. The last time these two teams met it was a record setting day as BNS would go on to win the contest 49 - 0 with 48 hits in the game. There was no repeat performance on Wednesday, but the game was still one sided.
The Game: After retiring the side in order in the first inning, BNS got to work quickly in the bottom of the frame. BNS scored nine runs on ten hits. The highlight of the out burst was a massive two run homerun by BNS EH and sometimes first basemen Leonel M. The lone bright spot for the Dawgs came in the second inning, when with two outs a fielding error by SS Tony C. opened the door for a long two run homerun by Dawgs fill in SS Juwan. BNS quickly answered the two run outburst with four more in the bottom of the second and three more in the bottom of the third. Score at the end of three 16 - 2, which how the game wound end. From the third inning on BNS' defense was the show with outstanding play from the short stop and both lady second basemen Stacey P. and Lindsay K. Even the BNS right fielder Liz M. got into the action with a catch in the fifth inning.
Up next for the BNS is a date with Magnetic Field. The Magnetic bunch will come out hard as they are fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot in the east. For the Dirt Dawgs the take on Time Served as they try to get their first win. Time Served will no doubt play hard as they are the only team to ever go winless and would probably like some company in the record books.

Wednesday, June 20
Dog Days of Summer Approach.
It is June 20, 2007 and the Dodge YMCA Adult Softball League’s twelfth season is in full swing. With three and one half weeks left in the regular season, there is much to be decided. Here is how they stand.

Eastern Division: Has been very competitive this season with all six teams still in playoff contention. Included in the scrum is a three team race for the fourth and final playoff spot.
1st Place: Element (7-2) stands poised to make another run at the title. Posting the league’s best win loss record over the last three seasons, Element (formerly Schnack) has yet to advance past the division finals in the playoffs. As evidence Element boasted the league’s best record in 2006 at 10-1, but ran into a red hot BNS team in the division finals and was eliminated in two. With a strong core group of players, and a new name, the Element crew looks to be the team to beat coming out of the east this year.
2nd Place: Gallery Bar (5-3) playing good ball in 2007. New to the league this year, Gallery has hit the ground running and looks to be Element’s stiffest competition in the division. Replacing Lobo in the league’s roster, Gallery has large shoes to fill as Lobo made it to the league championship in 2006. Luckily for the league it would appear that Gallery has some large feet.
3rd Place: B61 (5-3) has surprised many teams in 2007. Their record is currently good enough for second in the division. However they lost their head-to-head meeting with Gallery and find themselves in third. Although their record is positive, there is cause for concern in B61 land. The winners of the 2006 autumn session, B61 entered 2007 with a stunning seventh inning come from behind win against Zombie Hut. That said they have since gone 4-3. And those wins have come against teams with a combined 5-25 record, while their three losses have come against title contenders Gallery, BNS, and Element whose combined record is 18-6. If B61 wants to advance far in the playoffs they will have to figure out how to beat one of the big clubs.
4th Place: CAPC (3-5) on the back of a stunning upset of Element has moved into the fourth and final playoff spot in the division and now control their own destiny. With two of their final three games against Magnetic Field (5th place) and the NY Anchors (6th Place) they stand poised to make the playoffs for the first time in the team’s history.
5th Place: Magnetic Field (2-5) & 6th Place: NY Anchors (2-6) have made the division interesting this season and can both still make the playoffs. For Magnetic Field they have played well and with a couple of wins in upcoming games with the Anchors and CAPC will move into the final playoff spot. The same can be said about the Anchors playoff chances, with wins against CAPC and Magnetic Field they will clinch the playoff berth. In 2007 the Anchors continue to be an enigma. In my opinion the Anchors are very close to putting it all together. After getting knocked out in the first round by Schnack (Element) in 2006, the Anchors were expected to make a strong showing in 2007. They have a large group of talented hitters, three or four quality female players and really should be better then their 2-6 record. Should they make the playoffs and have a full squad in the first round, their opponents will have their hands full.

Western Division: They say the cream rises to the top. Well in the Dodge YMCA it rises to the top and over to the west. The western division is home to league’s defending champions and also home to 13 of the last 16 championship series participants.
1st Place: Zombie Hut (6-1) has become a true power house. They have run off six consecutive victories in 2007 and have only an opening day upset defeat at the hands of B61 to blemish what would be a perfect record. The Hut crew has displayed amazing offensive output this year scoring almost 14 runs per game on average. To put it in perspective the league average for runs scored per game is 9.04. All while playing a stout defense that allows a mere 4.7 runs against. With a mix of youth and experience, an obviously stacked lineup that includes some of the leagues best ladies, this team is a force to be reckoned with.
2nd Place: BNS (6-1) is the standard in which all teams are measured when it comes to Dodge YMCA softball. The league’s most storied franchise; BNS has been here from the beginning. In 1996 they entered the league as Annie’s Blue Moon, then in 1999 participated as Smith’s Tavern and finally as Brooklyn Net Sellers starting in 2005. In the eleven previous seasons they have been to the championships 9 times including the last eight in a row, winning seven. Since starting 2006 with four straight losses, BNS has been nearly unbeatable winning 19 of their last 20 outings (including playoffs), with only a 2007 opening day loss to Gallery Bar. BNS is tied with Zombie Hut (ZH holding division tiebreaker) in record and runs against, and their July 3rd head-to-head meeting will likely decide the western division.
3rd Place: Stanley Steamers (5-3) also know as McMahon’s has always been and continues to be a playoff contender. Securely in third place they have clinched a playoff birth. They will have a hard time moving up with three loses and could yet fall to fourth with another loss as Angry Wade’s holds the tie breaker over the Steamers.
4th Place: Angry Wade’s (5-4) is the model of inconsistency. Now in their seventh season, Wade’s has never missed the playoffs, this year is no different. As always Wade’s boasts one of the leagues most talented teams. But Wade’s posse often plays to the level of its competition. So they will take some strange losses in the regular season but become an extremely dangerous team in the playoffs.
5th Place: Time Served (1-6) & 6th Place: Dirt Dawgs (0-8) have both been mathematically eliminated from the championship playoffs. For Time served it looks like they will have a chance to defend their “B” playoff title from 2006. After being the first team in the league’s history to go winless in 2006 they won two straight in the post season to capture the crown. For the Dirt Dawgs the out look is not so shiny. After posting a 2-9 regular season record in 2006, they have taken a step back in 07’ and will need to win two of their last three to match the 06’ mark.
So that sums it up, all standings are accurate as reported as of 3:00pm on June 20th. The stretch run will be interesting in the west as we wait to see who emerges as the top seed. Not to be outdone, the East with three teams still playing for their playoff lives and three others jockeying for position, the games and weather are surely going to heat up.

BNS Holds Off Anchors to Win 6th Straight
On Friday BNS and the Anchors took to the field in a game with playoff implications for both clubs. The Anchors entered the game with a 2-5 record needed a win to keep from falling out of playoff contention in the eastern division. For BNS a win would help them keep pace with the red hot team from Zombie Hut for top spot in the west.
BNS scored early and often in the affair to out pace the Anchors by an 11-6 final. How it happened: BNS opened the scoring right from the outset as their first two batters singled and were later driven in, in the first to jump out to the 2-0 lead. After a scoreless bottom of the first the BNS crew would add more in the second. The inning began with a single by Emily W. but looked like it would short circuit when the Anchors recorded the next two outs. But consecutive hits by Lindsay K, Dave G, Liz M, Dave G, Chris B. and Jake P. would result in a three run two out rally. Not to be out done, the Anchors would get untracked in the bottom of the second when Elliot, Dom, Roger, Roger, Kate and Yuki would start the inning with five consecutive hits to the tune of three runs of their own. Score at the end of two, 5-3. On the strength of a Mike J. double and another singly by Emily BNS would extend the lead to three. Only to be answered by an RBI single by Elliot in the bottom of the third. End of three, 6-3. The score would stay the same until the fifth inning where BNS would plate two more on an RBI triple by Mike J. and another RBI Single by Emily. After keeping the Anchors off the board in the bottom of the inning, BNS would add three more in 6th inning. Included in the three run rally were back-to-back homeruns by Tim R. and Aaron R. In the bottom of the sixth Roger would get his second hit of the day and score his second run for the Anchors to make the score at the end of six innings 11-5. The Anchors would tack on one more in the seventh to pull within five runs but could not string a comeback rally together.
Once again the ladies led the charge for BNS as they went a combined 5 for 11, highlighted by Emily W. who went 3 for 4 with two RBI. For the Anchors Roger W. was a force on the base paths using his speed to force three errors by the usually sure handed team from BNS.
Up next for the Anchors is a must win against the team that currently occupies the fifth spot in the eastern division, Magnetic Field. The winner of this head-to-head match up will be one step closer to securing the fourth and final playoff spot in the eastern division. For BNS a date with the Dirt Dawgs on Wednesday could bring them one step closer to a playoff birth.

Element Over Powers Magnetic Field
Riding high as the leaders of the Eastern Division, perennial contender Element had another strong pitching performance from their Ace Christina M. Christina got her squad off to a strong start by blanking their opponents from Magnetic Field for the first three innings. While Christina took care of the defense, Elements resurgent line-up took care of the scoring, as Element poured on nine runs over the first three frames. Magnetic Field was able to get on the board and break the shutout in the top of the 4th. With two outs in the inning, Element's Right-Center fielder Ryan came up just a bit short a terrific diving attempt which would have recorded the third out. Magnetic Field came around to score one run. Magnetic Field would later tack on a run in the 5th and three more in the 6th, making the score 9-5. Element answered back with five big runs in the bottom of the 6th, increasing the lead to nine runs. Magnetic Field not willing to roll over added two more in the top of the seventh with a long 2-run homerun. It would prove however to be too little, too late. The game was nailed down by Christina, who snared a line drive come backer to end the game.
Game notes: Element's top of the lineup (Mac, Johnny, Tito, Jeff) went a combined 11-15 with 10 runs scored, and 8 RBI.
Up next for Element is a date with CAPC. Element must be careful not to look past this game as they have a meeting in two weeks with Angry Wade's. For the much improved Magnetic Field they have a date with B61. Magnetic Field is currently entrenched in a three team race for the fourth and final eastern division playoff spot. In the three team race, Magnetic Field, NY Anchors and CAPC are all separated by 1/2 a game in the standings.

B61 Skewers Anchors!
In a much anticipated eastern division game with playoff implications for both teams, B61 defeated the NY Anchors 8 – 3.
The early stages of the game were one sided with B61 pitcher Henry stifling the Anchors’ offensive attack. Meanwhile B61 was on the attack to an early 4 – 0 lead. But if you know the Anchors, you know there is no quit in them. So when first baseman Brandon G. hit a three run homerun in the third to draw to within one, Anchors’ spirits were high. After reaching first on an infield single and advancing to second, Todd H. looked like he might be the game tying run on an ensuing hit. However, B61 had him dead to rights at the plate. And in what can only be described as an Alex Rodriguez like play, Todd threw a wild flying kick at the ball in an attempt to jar the ball loose. The player was called out but that didn’t stop tempers from flaring.
With tempers and adrenaline running high B61 came up to bat with a mission. B61 hit the ball hard all over the place, infield hits, outfield hits and one line drive off of Anchors’ pitcher and Captain Colin G’s left leg. Colin who is no stranger to line drives took the play in stride and was able to finish the inning. When the dust settled B61 had added on four runs pushing the lead to five. The Anchors effort was once again game, but a lack of offensive production and shaky defense were too much to overcome.
Anchors’ Notes: Cesar A. entered the game for the Anchors with one out and bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. He was able to produce two pop ups and work out of the jam. Veteran Paul Juhn left fielder was back in form making some terrific plays in foul territory.
Next up for B61 is another division show down with Magnetic Field. For the Anchors it is a date with BNS. And the question remains, will the Anchors continue to sink slowly or do they still have hope in grabbing the 4th place spot in the east to reach the playoffs for a second consecutive year. Friday’s game will be a humungous test, against BNS they at times have played close but in seven years have never been victorious against the seven time champs. Hey but there is always HOPE!!!

Man Err... Bus Bites Dawgs
On Thursday B61 and the Dirt Dawgs took to the field to make up an April 27th rain out. For the Dawgs it wasn't worth the wait as they were defeated 19 - 7.
For the Dawgs the seven runs is their high water mark for offense as we approach the mid way point in the season. To add insult to offensive injury the seventeen runs scored by B61 pushes the Dawgs over the century mark for runs against this season, the first team to hit that mark. For B61 the win couldn't have come at a better time. After opening the season with two straight wins including an opening day upset over Zombie Hut, it has been tough sledding for the Bus Stop crew. Losers of three straight, B61 has dropped a few winnable games of late. Losing a one run decision to Gallery, they then blew a sixth inning five run lead to Element and then they came up three runs short after battling back against defending champs BNS.
Now back at .500 (3-3), B61 will look to keep their winning ways going with a June 7th meeting with the Anchors. For the Dawgs, they will look to get untracked against a very chippy McMahon's team on June 8th.

Wade's Downs Magnectic Field
Wade H. (AW)
Wade Pushing the Right Offenisve Buttons
After stumbling out of the gate to a 1 - 2 start to the season, the crew from Angry Wade's seems to have righted the ship by winning their last two games in convincing fashion. With a stout 16-5 victory over Magnetic Field and a 17-2 drubbing of the Dirt Dawgs in their previous outing, Wade's offense looks to be headed in the right direction.
The embattled gang from Mag. Field put up a good fight but battled being short handed and out gunned.
As the league is using this holiday week to make-up rain outs, it is a short turn around for both teams. Both teams play on Friday. For Wade's an opportunity to stretch their win streak to three straight as the take on the struggling CAPC. For Magnetic Field the task is tall, as they take on a motivated team from McMahon's. Losers of three straight for the first time in the team's history, McMahon's will be playing with a chip on their shoulder.       Jake P.

BNS Puts Lid on CAPC
Rich Benner Pitching
For Second time in as many starts, Rich B. Dominates
On Wednesday BNS and CAPC took the field in what was to be a one sided affair. Despite missing four starters, BNS quickly dispatched CAPC with a 12-0, five inning mercy victory. Entering the game scoring 6.5 runs per game (rpg) CAPC had scored the second fewest runs per game by any team. Better then only the 0-5 Dirt who are scoring just 4 rpg. As for their opponent, BNS boasts the league's stingiest defense, allowing just 5.4 rpg coming in. The recently hot BNS defense has allowed just seven runs over their last three games, while the offense has scored an even 10 runs per game.
The game started quickly for BNS. After working around a two out error by Jake P. at short stop in the top of the first, BNS put up five runs in the bottom of the inning. Included in the rally were doubles by Dave G. and Jake. After back-to-back errors by Emily W. that allowed the first two batters to reach in the top of the second, Rich B. pitched his team out of trouble by retiring the next three batters without allowing the runners to advance past second base. Both teams went quietly until the bottom of the third inning where BNS tacked on a run. Tim R. lead off the inning with a triple and would come around to score on an RBI single by Leonel M. In the fourth Paul broke up Rich's no hit bid with a lead off single to center field. Almost in response, BNS scored six more times in the bottom of the fourth to go up by twelve. In the top of the fifth Rich was in control again. After a one out error by Jake (his second of the day), Rich retired the next two in order, including a game ending strike out.
For BNS the offense was a team effort as the 3,4 and 5 hitters went a combined 7 for 9 with 6 runs and 7RBI. But once again the story was Rich B. who threw a one hit shut out to lead the team to victory.
Up next for BNS is the much anticipated match against the league's best offense of Zombie Hut. For CAPC it is a date with the team that occupies second spot in the Eastern division, Gallery.

In a Rivalry Rematch, Element Drops Anchor(s)
Tito M.
Tito Powers Element to Victory
In a rematch of last season’s first round eastern division playoff series Element took on the Anchors. For anyone new to the league or unfamiliar to the rivalry, Element (then Schnack) took a forfeit victory under strange circumstances to win the second game in the series and advance to the division finals. The unconventional move raised eyebrows throughout the league and the ire of the frustrated Anchors. So when these two teams met on Friday it was surprising to find the strangest incident in the leagues history would happen after the games final out was recorded and was completely non-softball related, but more on that later.
Element who is still seeking consistency in their game and line-up this season was short handed yet again as they were missing 5 players. Most noticeable of the missing players (including multiple starters) was the absence of the team’s inspirational leader and center fielder Mac P. Missing so many players, it was a perfect time for two year veteran Val to make a return as well as shortstop Johnny to take his first swings of the season. Johnny has been battling a pre-season shoulder injury and has been DH for so far this season.
Although down in players, Element wasted no time in capitalizing on some Anchors shoddy defense and jumping out to an early ten run lead. The Anchors undaunted never stopped playing hard and faced an 11-2 deficit heading into the top of the seventh. After holding Element scoreless in the top of the frame, the Anchors combined some clutch hitting with some sloppy Element defensive play and a fairly accurate Johnny Pesky impression (holding on to the ball) by Tito to draw within two. But with two outs and the tying run on deck, Element ace Christina M. induced a game ending infield pop up.
For the Anchors relief pitching saved the day in the sixth, as they narrowly avoided a mercy. For Element Tito picked up the offensive slack by going 4 for 4 with numerous RBI.
In one of the stranger events to take place in the league’s twelve year history, police officers arrested an area youth for narcotics possession. After the game concluded the officers pursued and captured the youngster on to the middle of the field. The suspect might have gotten away, but ran into one of the Anchors larger players (who wishes to remain nameless), the collision impeded the suspect’s progress long enough for the police officers to gain ground and eventually make the arrest.
Up next for the Anchors it is a thirteen day layoff and then a game against B61. For Element it is fourteen days off and then a game against Magnetic Field.

BNS Rolls On.
Tim at Bat
Tim R. Continues Hot Hitting 2 for 3, 2 RBI, Run
On Tuesday BNS took on B61. The game marked the first time the two teams have met since their 2006 first round playoff series. BNS came into the game riding high on a three game winning streak. For B61 the story was much different as they were coming off a recent loss that saw them blow a sixth inning five run lead. According to the history between the two teams this game should have been a one sided affair. In their last three head to head meetings BNS has outscored B61 by a 41 - 8 margin. But since their last meeting B61 has won the Fall League championship and has continued their great play this season by beating a very powerful Zombie Hut team in the season opener and taking the perennial contenders of Element to the brink before blowing the afore mentioned sixth inning lead.
When the game started BNS jumped on top with a two out three run rally. The rally got started with a questionable two out double over the third base bag by Jake P. that was followed by four consecutive singles, including a two RBI single by Stacey P. B61 would strike back quickly when with one out and one, on slugger Jamie V. hit a hard double into the gap in left-center field. Chris B. made a great play to keep the ball from getting by. But as he went down to block the ball he took himself out of throwing position. In an attempt to move the ball quickly he flipped the ball to Jake P. who had come over to back up the play. Jake unaware that Chris thrown him the ball never saw it and Jamie was able to score on the play unchallenged. In the second the hot hitting of BNS' ladies continued with a leadoff single by Lindsay K. Aided by a couple of throwing errors and a sac-fly by Tim R. that scored a runner from second base, BNS had stretched the lead to five. The score would stay the same until the bottom of the fourth inning. In the frame B61 rallied for three runs. Jamie got things started with a leadoff triple to deep right field and was followed by RBI singles by Henry, Willy and JJ. Now the score 7-5 BNS would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth to go up 8-5, which would turn out to be the final score.
The game was at times sloppy and at times flawless. Each team played terrific defense at times but both ended up with three errors. B61 threw one runner out at the plate, had numerous great catches by the out field defense and a terrific diving catch by Jamie at third to rob Lindsay K. of her second hit of the day. For BNS it was all about the infield defenders. They were responsible for 19 of the game's 21 outs, including stellar line-drive snags by Chris D. and Stacey P. and an unassisted double play by Tony C.
Now winners of four straight BNS next faces CAPC in a make-up of a previous rainout. For B61 it is a make-up vs. the Dirt Dawgs.

BNS Hands McMahon's Their Second Loss
Rich Benner Pitching
Rich B. Dominates McMahon's
In arguably the best played game of the early season, BNS out duels McMahon's in route to a 5 - 1 victory. The game featured two teams that have been embroiled in a rivalry that has lasted six or seven years now. McMahon's and BNS have met in the Championship two or three times over the last seven years with McMahon's dealing BNS their only playoff defeat over during their historic eight year run. That defeat being in the 2003 Championship series.
In this most recent chapter BNS got off to a fast start when Dave G. led off the bottom of the first innign with his 1st Homerun of the season. The run would be answered in the top of the second when Nick would drive in Joe S. from third with an RBI single. The score stayed knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the third. After Jake P. led off the inning with a ground out, BNS would have four consecutive hits including an RBI triple by Tim R. The three run burst was capped off by a sacrifice fly to very shallow center field by Stacey P. On the play Jake P. running for Leonel M. got a great break from third and scored without a throw. The three run lead would be all Rich B. would need. BNS would go on to score another run in the bottom of the sixth, and win by a final of 5 - 1.
Runs not withstanding, the story for BNS on this day was all about the pitching by number two starter Rich B., who pitched like an ace on this day. Both teams dealt with questionable umpiring and Rich scattered five hits over seven innings and worked around two errors by back-up shortstop Jake P to allow just one earned run.
Up next for BNS is a Tuesday date with B61. For McMahon's the road gets even tougher. After facing the leagues stingiest defense in BNS, they have a date with the leagues most stout offensive team (13 runs per game) Zombie Hut.

A Dozen in the Sixth Keeps Element on the Right Track.
Late Element charge thwarts upset. B61 held a commanding 9-4 lead entering the bottom half of the 6th inning. In the frame Element would spring to life, after Brian led off with a solo HR to wake up the scuffling elements. Thirteen consecutive batters woulds reach base and tweleve runs would score giving Element 16 - 9 edge. B61 came up blank in the top of the seventh, sealing the victory for Element. Slugging stars for Element included mike 4-4 w/3RBIs, brian 3-4 2HR and Tito 2-2 w/HR and 4RBIs. Wednesday's victory marks the second time in five outings (4 wins) that Element has come from behind to claim victory!
Up next for B61 is a date with BNS. For Element it is a rematch of last seasons first round playoff series with the Anchors.

Anchors Drop the Gavel on Time Served
The Anchors served a heavy sentence to Time Served. The Anchors were guilty as charged for asault with intent to mercy. All the anchors had a terrific hitting spree with Cesar and Brandon connecting again with homeruns each. Both Paul Isolano and Doug Thomas made great catches in the field
respectfully, the one from Paul leading to the Anchors first double play of the season. Balanced pitching continued from both the Skipper Colin and Captain Dom and great defense from all the Anchors in the field. Only a couple of errors had them a little bit in trouble but then their bats
ignited later in the 6th inning to give them a secure victory.

Shooting Gallery
In a very close game home field advantage
pays off for Gallery. After the Anchors aggressively made a comeback from
a 6 run deficit to tie it in the top of the 7th inning, they fell short in the bottom with 1 out and two on to a winning base hit by Gallery. A couple of sure catches in the outfield were missed by the Anchors leading up to their demise but were made up by those same players with a great at bat performance later, forcing Gallery to rally in the bottom of the seventh.

BNS Overcomes the Elements
Tim at Bat
Tim Powers BNS to Victory
In a rematch of last season's division finals, BNS took on the team from Element. Element came into the game a bit short handed as they were missing their all-star starting pitcher Christine M. and starting outfielder Jeff W.
The game started out close as neither team could get any offense going through the first three innings. Element saw a glimmer of hope in the top of the fourth when Tito got the inning started with a lead off double. Tito then would advance on a fly ball to center. So with a runner on third and one out Element stood poised to break the scoreless tie. It would not however come to pass as Brian would hit a sharp liner to third that was dropped by BNS third basemen Tim R. Now with runners on first and third Doug would hit an identical liner, this one handled by Tim. It would also turn into a double play as Brian got caught off of first base.
In the bottom of the fourth BNS finally broke out to the tune of six runs. The inning got started with a leadoff double by Dave G. and was highlighted by a three run HR by Tim. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 5th by Element, BNS tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the frame, punctuated by Tim’s second HR of the day. This one a two run shot down the right field line.
The score would stay the same until the top of the seventh, when Element would break up Chris D’s shut out bid. Element would get their only run courtesy of a Sacrafice fly Jodi.
Up next for Element is B61 and for BNS it’s a date with McMahon’s.

homers and machine gun hitting Cesar with a homer as well finally broke out.

BNS Bounces Back
Aaron Fielding
Aaron R.: A big man has a big day at the plate.
After losing their opener for a second consecutive season, Brooklyn Net Sellers (BNS) was loaded for bear on Monday when they took the field against Angry Wade's. The end would see BNS mercy the Wade's crew 19-7.
The game started quickly for both teams as Wade's scored a run in the top of the first inning, only to see it answered by three from BNS in the bottom of the frame. After Wade's went quietly in the top of the second, BNS would break the game open in the bottom of the inning. BNS scored seven in the inning while batting around, including a stretch that would see six consecutive batters reach base. BNS added three more in the bottom of the third and seemed to have the game well in hand with a 12 run lead. But they would lose their lead off batter and left fielder Chris B. for the remainder of the game in the same inning. After taking a called strike three Chris lost his cool and threw his bat violently at the dugout fence, the umpire wasted no time in ejecting Chris for his transgressions. BNS, short handed on the day would be forced to play with a fourth female in the field. Wade's now smelling blood in the water and sensing an opportunity to get back into the game would post four runs in the top of the fourth inning, including an clutch two out single to through the right side of the infield by Kay S. Undaunted BNS would regain their composure by getting two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wade's would get a run in the sixth only to see it answered by four more in the bottom of the inning, giving BNS a 19 -7 lead and the evocation of the mercy rule by the umpire.
Game highlights include two three run homeruns by Aaron R. with 6 RBI and a 3 for 3 outing with two runs scored by Liz M. In all the ladies for BNS would go 7 for 12 with 7 runs scored. For Wade's Sal would hit a solo HR to kick off the fourth inning rally. The rally was capped by previously mentioned two out single by Kay S.
Up next for Wade's is a tough McMahon's team while BNS looks forward to a rematch of last seasons Division Championship series against Element (formerly Schnack)

Gallery Stops Champs Win Streak at Seven!
After getting rained out in their opener the three time defending champs took the field on Tuesday looking to get their season off to a good start. It was not to be. Facing the team from Gallery Bar, BNS made 10 errors in route to a 13 - 8 thrashing.
Each team would score three in the first inning and the score would remain tied until the bottom of the third. After a leadoff single for Gallery by John N. and a ground out by Rich C., Gallery would see the next seven batters reach base safely. BNS would come back with two of their own in the top of the fourth only to be answered by Gallery with four in the bottom of the inning. BNS would tack on a run in each of the last three innings but would never really threaten.
BNS had more then one streak broken on Tuesday. Along with BNS’ regular season seven game streak dating back to last year, BNS had won thirteen straight (including playoffs) as well as BNS star pitcher Chris D. having a personal 17 game winning streak dating back to 2004. BNS looks to get past this minor hiccup and bounce back next week against Angry Wade’s. Jake P.

McMahon's Avoids Opening Day Upset
The game was close and tied most
of the way until McMahons broke out with 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, to take the 8 - 5 lead and sink the Anchors. On the bright spot for them, several Anchors had their full of singles, doubles and triples.

54 Days to Opening Day !!!
Today's date is February 20th. That means there are just 54 days until opening day. But before then we have a mandatory league meeting on March 26th at the Dodge YMCA offices.
When the season begins on April 16th there will be three different defending champions taking the field during that first week of play. The 2006 Champions Brooklyn Net Seller (BNS) won their 4th title in a row by defeating Lobo in the 2006 championship series. They have taken the crown 8 out of the last nine years. Along with BNS a returning champion from last year is the legal team of Time Served (TS), who won the "B" playoffs. After going winless in the regular season, TS won their only two playoff games to take the first ever "B" Championship. The final 2006 Champions came to us in the biting October chill of our First ever Autumn season. In the Fall championship series B61 defeated perennial power house McMahon's in a best of three series.
Once again we have high hopes for the Dodge YMCA Coed softball league. There are some administrative and rules changes that will be addressed at the previously mentioned league meeting. As of now every team from 2006 will be returning, and we are attempting to expand by two teams. The league is right now as strong as it has been in its 12 year history.

Friday, April 20
New Name, Same Game.
In their first game of the season, Element (formerly Schnack) quickly dispatched a valiant Dirt Dawgs in a 19-7 five inning mercy. Look for Element to pick up where they left off as the are surely a playoff contender.
