Deer Lakes Youth Soccer: Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm new to the Club or to the age group. Please describe what I can expect for each age group.

For all age groups, the Fall season runs from the end of August through the end of October.  Registration for the Fall season is usually in May and June.  The spring season runs from the end of March through the beginning of June.  Registration for the Spring season is usually in January and February.  Each season is approximately 8 weeks long.  Each age group has a preferred roster size, but rosters may vary from season to season based on registration numbers and volunteer coaches available.

All the Club's teams are registered through the PA West North District.  A link to their website can be found below.

Age Group: Under 6

This age group includes coed teams.  Generally, they practice (to be determined each season) evenings from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  The first half hour is practice, the second half hour is a game.  Each player is required to have a jersey, shin guards, water bottle, and a size 3 ball.  Soccer cleats are encouraged but not required.  There are no goalies and parents and coaches are encouraged to try to keep the ball in play, rather than stopping play to kick the ball in too often.  Teams play 3 v 3 and the preferred roster size is 6.

A NOTE REGARDING REFEREES – No intimidation of the referees will be tolerated during any age bracket game at Deer Lakes Soccer.   This includes away games. Parents must display good sportsmanship and be good role models for our players.  Please be respectful of the refs and accept their decisions that are made to the best of their ability.  They view the game play at a different angle than the parents.

I would like my child to play on Coach Jones' team.  Will my request be granted?

No parental requests will be accpeted by the Club.  We work very hard to create teams that are going to benefit all the children playing for the organization.  Therefore, requests for a certain coach or to play with a certain other player will not be accepted.

It's practice/game day and it's raining. How do I know if the team is still playing?

Your coach is the best source of information regarding games and practices.   However, the club makes every effort to update the website for cancellations.  We try to give you as much warning as possible, but late calls due to the weather may occur.

Practices may be cancelled due to precipitation (rain or snow), cold temperatures, or field conditions (too wet).  Games are usually only cancelled for lightning.  In the case of lightning, practices/games will be suspended for 30 minutes after seeing lightning.  Activity can resume after a 30 minute lightning-free period.   (This is a PA West rule.)  If you are in doubt, please check the website for more information.

My son or daughter is close to the age cutoff and wants to play with friends that are in a different age group. Can they play in a different age group?

The Club does allow the occasional player to play up to his or her next age group, but reserves the right to deny requests.  Parents should indicate on the registration form that they would like their child considered for playing up.  The Deer Lakes Soccer Play-Up policy is as follows:

  • Registration must be closed before playing-up is considered.  The age group commissioner must place all age appropriate players on a team first.   The Club does not want a "play-up" player to take the last spot over a player who is in the correct age group.
  • Once teams are created and it has been determined that there are spots open, an email will be sent to those players interested in playing-up.
  • If the demand is less than the amount of spots open, the play-up requests may be granted.  If the demand exceeds the amount of open spots, an evaluation will be held with all players interested in attendance.

In addition to the players physical and skill evaluation, other considerations such as age and school grade will be considered during the play-up recommendation phase.  Players may also be asked to play-up by the club due to lack of age appropriate players in an age bracket.  If a player is allowed to play up to the next older age group, the parents must sign a play-up consent form (no notary is required, although there is a spot for a notary signature on the consent form).  PA West does not permit players to "play down" to a younger age group.

In any play-up considerations, the DLS Board will provide the final decision.  The team roster size will NOT be exceeded to accommodate play-up requests.

I am registering late, but I know there’s a team that could fit one more player and DLS won’t let my son or daughter play!

Teams must be created and declared with PA West at least one month before the start of the season.  Therefore, only players registered on time are guarenteed a roster spot.  If the player had been registered on time, perhaps an additional team could have been formed instead of maxing out the number of players on each existing team.   The Club volutneers put a lot of time and effort into creating the teams and unneccessary work will be repeated if a player is allowed to register late.

The late-registerd child can be placed on a wait list and will be notified if and when a spot opens.

What is club's refund policy?

A player withdrawal can cause a problem for a team if it leaves too few players.  However, the Club recognizes that some players do need to withdraw for various reasons.  If a refund is requested prior to the 'late' deadline, the Club will generally provide a full refund.  If a refund is requested after the 'late' deadline, but before the date when practices are scheduled to begin for the season, a refund is generally given, equal to the fee paid less the applicable PA West registration fee and any other fee the Club may incur. After a specific date determined for each season, refunds are considered on a case by case basis and typically are only given for medical reasons or moves from the area.  Refunds are paid by the Club Treasurer, who mails a check to the mailing address of the family requesting the refund.

Friends of ours want to play, but are going through a difficult time financially and therefore cannot sign up their children. Can something be done?

Yes. As a community organization, DLS does not want children to miss soccer play due to temporary family financial difficulties.  Partial or full fee waivers (i.e. Scholarships) are available for such instances.  Please contact a DLYS board member if you are interested in applying for a Scholarship.  Additional volunteer hours may be required as part of the scholarship.
