Westchester Del Rey Major Softball dropped a heartbreaker today, 9-8 to Latin America. The ladies will tackle Canada tomorrow at 5:30pm.
Things started on a bad note as Latin Americatallied 5 runs in the top of the first. Westchester battled back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 2nd. The 5th inning proved to be the deciding factor as Latin America scored 4 runs to take a commanding 9-2 lead. WDRLL rallied in their half of the 5th, pushing 6 runs across the dish but it wasn't enough.
Alexis Cecere led the way batting, going 2 for 3 with 2 rbis and a run scored. Cercere also hurled a complete game, taking the loss. Kendall Times pitched in going 2 for 3.

Central representative District 9 from Michigan became the 2011 Big League Softball Champs yesterday, defeating the Asia-Pacific representative from the Philippines 9-2. Both teams wound up pool play with identical 7-2 records. District 37 finished the tournament at 4-5.
It was a rough week for the girls from D37. They opened the tournament with a 7-1 loss to the East team from Delaware. That was followed by a 20-6 drubbing from the Host team from Kalamazoo. The 3rd day of action saw the girls split a pair of games, losing the first to Asia-Pacific 7-0 before notching their first victory over EMEA 10-9.
Another doubleheader on day 4 opened with a win over Latin America, 3-1, but the second game wasn't so kind as eventual champion Central pounded D37 10-0. Day 5 was much kinder as D37 swept their 2 games, defeating Canada 11-1 and squeaking past Southwest 11-9. The final day saw Southeast beat D37 6-4.
Regardless of the finish, it was still a major accomplishment to get to the World Series. A small handful of teams, out of the thousands that start in tournaments, reach the grand stage. Our hats are off to the girls for their fine showing and great representation of District 37!
NOTE: D37 Umpire Mike Mayer worked 3rd base in the championship game. Great job Mike!
