Challenger Division Field is a REALITY!

ANAHEIM – A ball field and surrounding area at aging Pioneer Park will get a $2-million facelift courtesy of Major League Baseball and the Angels Baseball Foundation, the organizations announced Wednesday. The field will be spruced up so that Little Leaguers, girl fast-pitch softball players and soccer athletes can compete on a top-level surface.  Angels owner Arte Moreno watches his wife, Carole, don her hardhat during a ceremonial groundbreaking for the MLB and Angels All-Star Complex Wednesday.  City spokeswoman Ruth Ruiz said the project, called the Angels All-Star Complex, will include:
•A Miracle League baseball field – a custom-designed field with a completely flat, cushioned and rubberized surface to help prevent injuries, and wheelchair accessible dugouts. Such fields, extremely rare, are tailored for disabled children.
•A designated soccer field.
•Wheelchair-accessible restrooms.
•Below-grade dugouts at the main field.
•A snack shack.
•Park improvements, including sidewalks, landscaping and additional parking.
The upgrade of the 15.8-acre park is part of a program by Major League Baseball to invest in the host city of the All-Star Game, said Tim Brosnan, MLB executive vice president.  "We want this field to be a lasting memory of the (2010) All-Star experience," he said.  Former Angels pitcher Chuck Finley, on hand for Wednesday's
groundbreaking ceremonies, said driving past ball fields at parks like Pioneer brought back fond memories.
"I tell people that some of my best memories are as a kid playing at parks like this," Finley said. "I think one day, once this park has been built, some kid will tell you a wonderful story that started right here and changed his life." The city is also upgrading the playground area with a play fort, slides, swings, rubberized surfacing, security lighting and wheelchair-accessible paths to picnic benches and the picnic shelter. The city received a $150,000 federal grant and will contribute an additional $590,000 for the playground-area upgrades. All the renovations are scheduled to be completed by the All-Star festivities, on July 9-13.
