Jessica Berman - Head Varsity Coach
Jess is beginning our second year with the Allderdice Crew Team! Jess is a certified Level II coach/instructor by the U.S. Rowing Association.
She is graduate of Ithaca College in upstate New York, where she double-majored in gerontology and speech-language pathology and audiology. Jess has been a competitive sweep rower for almost ten years and is currenlty an active member of the Three Rivers Rowing Association master's rowing team.
In college she was a member of the Ithaca College women's novice and varsity teams. There she competed in races all over New York and New England, including the Head of the Fish, the New York State Championships, and ECACs, where she mostly competed in fours and eights. She is currently a member of the evening mixed-masters rowing team at TRRA. When she's not rowing, Jessica loves to read, travel, scuba dive, and run.

Kristen Freiss - Varsity Coach
Kristen joins us from Penn State where she was most recently an Assistant Coach in charge of the both the Men's and Women's Novice teams. While working with the novices, not only did they learn the fundamentals of rowing, but a few of her boats took gold in the Braxton and Frostbite races during their first semester of rowing. A Penn State graduate, Kristen majored in Public Relations with double minors in business and environmental studies.
Kristen has been a competitive rower for five years. While at Penn State, she competed as a lightweight rower, racing at the Dad Vails Regatta, Head of the Charles and various other races throughout the region. Currently a member of the morning Master Women’s rowing team at TRRA, Kristen recently took several medals home while competing at the 2009 US Rowing Masters Nationals Championship. Kristen is mostly a sweep rower, but recently expanded to sculling.
Outside of rowing, Kristen serves as Director of Marketing for the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, promoting economic growth throughout her hometown of Pittsburgh. In her spare time, you’re sure to find her either running, cheering on the Penn State football team, reading or spending time with family and friends.

Jayne Kirber - Head Novice Coach
Jayne is beginning her second year with the Allderdice Crew Team! She a certified Level I coach/instructor by the U.S. Rowing Association and has been a competitive rower for five years.
After graduating from Vassar College in New York, Jayne joined The Salisbury Boat Club in Salisbury, CT where she focused on sculling. To increase her competitive advantage she spent some time training at the world-class Craftsbury Sculling Center in Craftsbury, VT.
As a competitive rower, Jayne has raced her single shell as well as team sculling and sweep events. Most recently she won a gold medal in a 2x event at USRowing Master's Nationals. Jayne is an active member of the Three Rivers Rowing Association Competitive Women's Masters Team.
Besides rowing, Jayne is a Licensed Massage Therapist with experience in sports massage and has worked specifically with rowers to increase flexibility and performance. She practices yoga, has studied Alexander Technique (a way of learning how to decrease harmful tension in the body) and is a runner and cross-country skier. Jayne is also trained as an Emergency Medical Technician.
Jayne and her husband, Geoff, recently relocated here from Connecticut; they now live in Regent Square with their two large dogs and five rabbits. Besides coaching for us, Jayne works as a sports and medical massage therapist in Shadyside.

Elke Gitchel - Assistant Novice Coach
Elke has been a member of the Allderdice Crew Team for the past four years as a rower. This year we are thrilled to have her join us as an Assistant Coach wokring with our Novice Team.
Elke spent her summer working with Three Rivers Rowing Masters Teams as a coxwain and competed in Nationals where her boats often won medals!
Whenever Elke isn't at the boathouse (which isn't often!) she is a student at Chatham College majoring in education.
