Tournament Team Selection Process

updated 2009

Tournament teams will be selected through a nomination and selection process.  A nomination and selection meeting will be held by each division (Minors, Majors and Juniors) on or before June 1 of the current season.  This will allow sufficient time to contact the parents of each chosen player, confirm their level of commitment, and submit the final rosters to the Board of Directors for approval.  All managers must attend their respective nomination and selection meetings.  Assistant coaches are welcome, but they will not be involved in the voting process.  In the event that a manager has a conflict and cannot attend the meeting, he/she may designate an assistant coach as a voting representative for his/her team.  The DLL player agent shall be present as well.  If the player agent is unavailable, a board representative who is not a manager or coach shall be assigned to facilitate the proceedings. It is a manager’s responsibility to explore his/her players’ level of commitment prior to the selection meeting.  Since players can be nominated by any voting manager, managers are encouraged to explore the availability of all of their players. Tournament teams normally practice and/or play five or six times per week between June 15 and the start of the District 3 Tournament in early July.  Each team’s tournament experience varies in length, ranging from one week to a month.  A player’s commitment must include attending all tournament games and 90 percent of other team functions.  There also is a cost involved, ranging from $100 to $250.  This does not include travel expenses. All tournament teams will consist of a minimum of 11 players.  A 12th or 13th player may be added, however, if the selected manager decides to expand his/her roster and coaching staff.  The additional players must come from the pool of alternates (players who receive at least one vote).  Little League rules state that a manager may have one assistant coach if the team roster has 12 or fewer players and two assistant coaches if the roster has 13 or more.Tournament teams will be selected for the following divisions as long as there is adequate participation from eligible players and coaches:

·        13-14 Year Old Baseball & Softball

·        11-12 Year Old Baseball  & Softball

·        10-11 Year Old Baseball & Softball

·        9-10 Year Old Baseball & Softball

NOTE:  In the 9-10 year old division and the 10-11 year old division, a league may enter more than one tournament team with District Administrator approval.  Dexter Little League will evaluate this option on a year-to-year basis.

The following procedures will be used to select each tournament team:

1.  Junior division managers will select the 13-14 year old teams, Major division managers will select the 11-12 year old and 10-11 year old teams, and Minor division managers will select the 9-10 year old teams.  Minor division managers may request an evaluation session for 10-year-olds playing in the Major division.

2.  Managers will nominate players to be considered for the tournament team.  The names of the nominees will be written on a board so that they are visible to all managers.  NOTE:   Managers of Major division 10-year-olds may nominate their players for the 9-10 year old team and managers of Minor division 10-year-olds may nominate their players for 10-11 year old team.  However, these managers will not be involved in the voting process.

3.  Prior to voting, managers will speak on behalf of their players and also field questions from other managers about their players.

4.  If there are six (6) or more teams in a division, managers may not vote for their own players.  If there are five (5) or fewer teams in a division, managers may vote for their own players.  All managers must turn in a complete ballot during all stages of the voting process regardless of the number of teams.

5.  There will be two rounds of voting.  The first round will determine the first eight spots on the roster; the second round will determine the final three spots.  Voting on the 9th, 10th and 11th spots may not be necessary, however, if the voting managers unanimously agree that a remaining player, or players, belongs on the tournament team.  This will be determined during another pre-vote discussion, with managers again speaking on behalf of their players and fielding questions from other managers.

During the first round of voting, managers will rank the top eight players from 1-8.  Players receive 8 points for a No. 1 vote, 7 points for a No. 2 vote, 6 points for a No. 3 vote, and so on.  The votes are then tallied and the top eight vote-getters are placed on the team.  If there is a tie for the final spot and the players involved have received a vote from at least half of the league managers, all players involved in the tie will be placed on the team – as long as it doesn’t create a roster of more than 11 players.  Otherwise, all players involved in the tie will return to the nomination board and be part of round two.  NOTE:  A player who appears on only one ballot yet is among the top eight vote-getters must return to the nomination board and be part of round two.The second round of voting will be conducted similar to the first.  If there are three spots remaining, managers will rank the top three players from 1-3.  Players receive three points for a No. 1 vote, two points for a No. 2, and so on.  The votes are then tallied and the top three vote-getters are placed on the team.  If there is a tie for the final spot, managers must break the tie with another vote so that the roster includes only 11 players. In the event of a tie that managers cannot break, the eventual manager of the tournament team will make the final decision.6.  After selecting the tournament team, managers will create a pool of alternate players which may be used if a chosen player is unable to fill his/her commitment for any reason.  Only players who received votes during the process will be considered as alternates.  In the event that using an alternate is necessary, the eventual manager of the tournament team will make the final decision.            NOTE:  The 11-12 year old team will be selected prior to the 10-11 year old team.  Eleven-year-olds on the 10-11 year old team are potential alternates for the 11-12 year old team prior to June 15.

7.  Once a tournament team roster is established, eligible managers and coaches may volunteer to manage the team.  Managers will then discuss the prospects.  If there is a unanimous choice to fill the position, a vote is unnecessary and that person will be selected as the tournament team manager.  If there is support for more than one potential manager, the managers will then vote for one of the candidates.  The person with the most votes will be selected as the tournament team manager.  In the event of a tie, the Board of Directors will make the final decision.  NOTE:  If more than one manager or coach volunteers to manage the tournament team and there are less than six (6) teams in that division, the managers will not vote and the Dexter Little League Board of Directors will select the tournament manager.

Once a manager is selected, he/she will choose his/her assistant coach, or coaches, and scorekeeper.  The assistant coach, or coaches, must be eligible according to Little League rules.
