LITTLE SCHOLAR DSAFL requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. The Detroit NW Lions Program offers a valuable added incentive for academic excellence outside of the educational community. Our goal for this year is to provide our student athletes with the educational support, guidance and recognition that they need to succeed on and off the field. During the season please watch for upcoming Little Scholar Contest & Recognition and Award Programs including Overall Team Grade Point Average, Best Individual Grade Point Average and Most Improved Grade Point Average! Participants must maintain a 2.0 academic average to be eligible to participate in the program. Failure to do so constitutes grounds for being dropped from the roster However; we understand that not all student-athletes are able to meet our scholastic requirements. If a child does not meet the requirements of scholastic fitness, he/she may fill out and submit a Scholastic Eligibility Form which is to be signed by a school administrator stating that the child will benefit from participating in the Pop Warner Program. It is the discretion of the school administrator as to whether or not the student would benefit from participating in Pop Warner. This form allows us to monitor the progress of the child so that they maintain a minimum standard and understand the value of academics in conjunction with athletics. If you should have any questions concerning the Detroit NW LionsLittle Scholar Program, please feel free to contact Kathleen Spain.
Please remember to keep and make a copy of your End of the year June 2013 Report Card!
VOLUNTEERS (WE NEED YOUR HELP!) As always, the success and growth of our program is dependent on all of our volunteers. We thank those who have helped out in the past, and invite those who haven’t to help out this year. For those of you who are new to the program, volunteering even 2-3 hours a week during practice or 1-2 hours during home games can be a big help. Let us know that you are out there and we can all work together to see how we can best help the program. All parents are expected to volunteer. Our program is run solely by volunteers!! Without the volunteers in our program we simply would not have a program! In this information package you will have a Volunteer Sign Up Sheet. Anyone who comes in direct contact with the children MUST complete a Volunteers Form which requires a Background check. This is very important that checks be done, and are safety of your children.
E-MAIL UPDATES If you would like to have email updates regarding the program sent to your inbox, please send an email to detroitnwlions@yahoo.com ded to the distribution list.
FUNDRAISING The funds raised through fundraiser will be used to defray expenses incurred during the season including, trophies, banquets, uniforms, travel, transportation, referees, permits, insurance, fields/facilities fees, etc. Also, if a team (s) advanced to playoffs or the Pop Warner National Super Bowl in Orlando, Florida additional fundraising will be required. Our fundraiser is MANDATORY participation for each participant in our program.

Little Scholars Information
Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS) is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. We believe that the standards we have set give these children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.
Like such organizations as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), PWLS has academic guidelines and criteria that need to be met in order for a child to participate.
SCHOLASTIC FITNESS: THE NATIONAL POLICY Proof of satisfactory progress in school is required. A 2.0/70% or the equivalent shall be the minimum grade point average acceptable to participate. In cases of doubt, conflict of opinion, or if a valid report card is not submitted, the nationally published scholastic eligibility form shall be used and deemed final.
NOTE: This rule as it relates to scholastic grades may not be made more stringent by any team, association, or league, as other rules may be. No local team/squad may be allowed to participate in Regional/National sponsored championships or bowl games if it has not met the nationally published scholastic requirements.
WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A 2.0/70% GRADE POINT AVERAGE ? We understand that not all student-athletes are able to meet our scholastic requirements. If a child does not meet the requirements of scholastic fitness, he/she may fill out and submit a Scholastic Eligibility Form(2013 form).
This form is to be completed by those participants in the Pop Warner program that have not met the National Scholastic Requirement of 70 percent and/or 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) at the time of certification. This form must be accompanied by a progressing progress report or report card to be eligible for play after the October 21, 2013 deadline. That report must be dated between Sep. 21, 2013 and Oct 21, 2013. If no progressing progress report or report card is given in this window then the player shall be found ineligible for the rest of the year.
POP WARNER ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR PROGRAM: Each year, the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status. This process begins at the association level and up through each of the eight Pop Warner regions to the national level. In 2010, approximately 400,000 kids participated in Pop Warner. As our numbers once again reached record levels, 276 First Team members, over 5,000 Second Team members and 1,000+ Honorable Mention scholars were named as Academic All-Americans at the National Level for 2010-2011. The PWLS All-American Program requires a minimum 96% grade point average to apply for All-American status. After the applications have been processed, Pop Warner determines National First Team All-Americans (35 football, 35 cheer per grade), National Second Team All-Americans and National Honorable Mention Scholars.
