Devon Jones Remembered
Devon Jones, a Denby graduate and former 5th grade student of mine, died in a car accident October 17, 2002. He was attending Lakeland College in Wisconsin where he played football. We still remember him; he is deeply missed.
Mr. Carter, we will always remember you!
Kenneth Carter, affectionately known as Mr. Carter to chess enthusiasts all over Detroit, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002. I've made an album of the pictures I have of him. You can click on his picture or the headline above to reach it.
Special thanks to Chelese Pelt for donating three pictures to the site. We now have over 20 and are looking for more.
Five, Six, Seven--Wayne's in Heaven
It was quite a weekend for Wayne's chess program as three of their teams placed in the top 10 of Michigan's Scholastic Team Championship. Wayne's teams came in 5th, 6th, and 7th place.
Most impressive was the large number of medals Wayne brought home. Nine students were state medallists at what was the largest Michigan elementary tournament ever with a total of 529 participants.
Wayne's upper elementary team made a strong run for the state championship but fell short after losing their only game to Lansing Montessori in the 5th round. Montessori won the state championship and Wayne placed 5th out of 54 teams in the K-5 section after tie breaks.
Wayne's Principal, Ms. Herron-Taylor, said she was extremely proud of the chess teams. After Saturday Wayne's trophy count for the year was six.
Wayne Alumni Win K-6 State Championship
Gold medallist Kareem Coleman led Fisher Middle School to its 3rd state championship after beating Adam Schalter of Okemos. Adam is the current national champion and was favored to win. Anthony Watkins, a silver medallist, and Kevin Pitchford along with Kareem are now the top K-6 team in the state! All three played for Wayne last year. Ayanna Rogers, a gold medallist, did not attend Wayne, but played a key role in Fisher Middle School's state championship.
B Team Wins Respect
Chanita Wymes, Krystal Jordan, Ashley Davis, and SaMikel Bonhart became the first B Team in the history of Wayne's chess program to place in a state tournament. 42 teams competed in the K-3 section, and they placed 7th. Wayne's A Team placed 6th, just one spot ahead of the B team.
