Thursday, January 31 O'Brian Named MVP! Senior Chris O’Brian was named 2007 Most Valuable Runner at the awards banquet held on January 20. Chris received the most votes from his teammates who helped select the MVP. Sophomore Troy Mattingly was the recipient of the Colts Award which is awarded to a 1st year runner. Senior Josh Bell got the Spirit Award and Senior Alex Bettag received the 110% award. These are also awarded by their teammates. Senior Ryan Jett was presented with the Booster Clubs Student Athlete Award. Sunday, January 20 Coach Wise to Coach All-Stars Again Coach Paul Wise has been asked and accepted an opportunity to coach the Kentucky All-Starts at the DownUnder Games in Australia again in 2008. This will be Coach Wise's 4th time taking Kentucky runners to this event."I didn't know if I would go back." said Coach Wise "The trip takes alot of my spare time but I enjoy it and I think we are raising the bar for Kentucky runners."Team Kentucky finished 4th in 2007 missing getting to stand on the award stand for the Bronze medal by 9 points. Coach Wise thinks the team can get a medal in 2008.You can see a slide show of last years team by going to the links below. http://www.photoshow.net/kytn/ Friday, November 16 Colts Bring Home Post Season Awards Several members of the 2007 Cross Country Team received post season honors from the Area 3 (Louisville) Coaches. Senior Chris O'Brian was named Area 3 Class AA Runner of the year. Seniors Alex Battag, Josh Bell, Ryan Jett and Chris O'Brian. Sophomores Troy Mattingly and Atom McConnell. Freshman Shawn Barney were all named All-Area 3 Class AA. Coach Paul Wise was named Area 3 Class AA Coach of the year for the 3rd year in a row. Congratulations to all the Colts for another great season! Wednesday, November 14 Colts Finish 15th at State! The Cross Country Colts completed the 2007 season on a high note by finishing 15th in the Class AA State Championship race.The top 6 Colts finished within 52 seconds of each other and all 7 within 1:30 and the brown wave was able to surpass it's goal! After the Lexington Catholic Invitational the Colts were not even expected to make the State meet then the Colts turned it on. After October 13 the Colts finished 4th at the DeSales Invitational, 7th At The KTCCCA Meet of Champions, 4th at the Regional Championships and 15th at the State Championships.The Colts were led by its seniors but the sophomores and Freshman provided that extra kick into the State Meet. "Chris O'Brian, Alex Bettag, Ryan Jett and Josh Bell kept us in the game," Said Coach Wise "but it was the emergence of Atom McConnell, Troy Mattingly, Shawn Barney and Travis Gregory who pushed us over the top."Coach Wise went on to say " The Seniors provided the great leadership and the younger kids learned the game at the right time."The Colts were led by Chris O'Brian who ran the course in a time of 18:26, Alex Bettag was 4 seconds back at 18:30. Then came Atom McConnell 5 seconds behind Alex in 18:35. 30 seconds passed and Josh Bell came in with a 19:04 followed by Troy Mattingly in 19:08 and Shawn Barney in 1914. Ryan Jett ran a 20:06. "What a pack!" said Coach Wise "That's what we train our kids to do! I knew we were in great shape at the 1st hill, our kids got off to a great start."The Colts were the #4 seed out of region 3 but ended up beating 5 of the other #4 seeds, 2 #3 seeds and 1 #2 seed. Pretty impressive for a team that wasn't supposed to make the State Meet 6 weeks ago.The Colts ran it's last race in ClassAA and moves to Class A in 2008. Coach Wise and crew are looking forward to next year and beyond. Big things are just around the corner. Monday, November 5 Colts Returning to the State Meet After a 1 year absence, the Cross Country Colts are returning to the State Meet for the 17th time in 18 years! The Colts ran an outstanding race at the North Oldham Regional and finished 4th to claim the automatic bid the the State Championship Meet. The Colts were led by Senior Chris O'Brian who posted a time of 18:50 finishing 16th. The Colts placed all 7 runners in the top 34 finishing with a team score of 103, just 1 point behind regional rival Western Hills. The rest of the Colts finished: 19th Atom McConnell in 19:09, 22nd Josh Bell in 19:15, 23rd Troy Mattingly in 19:19, 27th Shawn Barney in 19:34, 32nd Ryan Jett in 19:54 and 34th Alex Bettag in 19:59. Saturday, September 1 Colts take 2nd at Dayton Relays! The 2007 Colts opened the season off with a strong 2nd place finish at the Dayton Relays. The Colts scored 84 points in the small school division finishing behind Covington Holy Cross. The Colts were led by Senior Alex Bettag who finished 9th in the 3,4 relay. Coach Wise was very pleased with the teams effort and expects big things this year. "We finished 2nd and were missing 3 runners who will help our team." said Coach Wise This could be an early indicator of things to come when regional realignment happens next season! If so, the DeSales better clear out a trophy case for the Cross Country and Track Teams!
Wednesday, April 18 2007 Season Schedule Taking Shape The 2007 season schedule is taking shape and looks to be a good one! The Colts will kick off the season on August 25th at the Dayton Kentucky Relays. This will be the 11th year that the Colts will start the year off in Dayton. In September the Colts will be at North Oldham on the 8th, Somerset on the 15th, South Oldham on the 22nd and Franklin County on the 29th. In October the Colts will be in Frankfort on the 6th, Lexington Catholic on the 13th, the 15th Annual DeSales Invitational will be on the 20th and the KTCCCA Meet of Champions will be at Masterson Station Park in Lexington on the 27th. The 1st practice of the 2007 season will be on Tuesday July 31 at 9:30AM. Team sign-ups will be on Tuesday May 15. Thursday, March 1 Kyle Belcher Signs Letter of Intent Four year Cross Country and Track Runner Kyle Belcher signed a Letter of Intent to run track and play soccer at the University of the Cumberlands. Kyle will start his collegiate career this fall. Kyle, who is the defending 400M Regional Champion, is looking to have a great senior season. Kyle was surrounded by family, coaches and friends as he signed the letter. "Kyle will be a top notch runner in college." Said Coach Wise Monday, March 26 Coach Wise to Coach All-Stars! Coach Paul Wise has been selected to Coach an All-Star Team going to Australia! This will be Coach Wise's third time coaching the team and hopes that the third time is a charm! "Last time we came in 5th place just missing getting a bronze medal" said Coach Wise, "this time I want to bring home some hardware!" Coach Wise will be taking 16 runners from the Mid-Atlantic Region. He is also the recruiting coordinator for the Kentucky track team. "I will be going with the Cross Country Team in July but I'm also finding runners to go with the track team." said Coach Wise Coach Wise will be gone the last 2 weeks in July with the All-Star team and will return home just in time for fall practice the begin.
