Cook County Invite on the Web

The Cook County Invite will have live video streaming as well as radio coverage of the classic portion of the pursuit. Its easy to do: just go to wtip.org and click on the live video link. Please pass this info along to your athletes' families and fans. Pincushion is in good shape, especially away from the stadium. We are altering the courses slightly to bring skiers back through the stadium on the lap and have a new finish that is slightly uphill instead of the too fast downhill finish. This will make for great spectator viewing. See you Friday.

Nordic Ski Team Needs Marketing Manager

After reading this morning's Duluth News Tribune it has come to the attention of the Duluth East Nordic Ski Team coaches that we are in desperate need of a full time marketing manager.

Published in the sports section of the Duluth News Tribune were the top ten sports stories of 2011.  Listed number 3 was the Duluth East and Hermantown hockey teams loosing at the State Meet.  There was no mention of the East Nordic Boys and Girls Ski Teams wining the State Meet.  This omission is significant for two reasons; 1) These were the only local area State Champion Teams during 2011 and 2) This was the 6th time in the history of skiing in Minnesota that the same school has won both the Boys and Girls title (3 of them have been by Duluth East).

Position Description

Title: Marketing Manger

Hours: Full Time

Duties: Promote the Duluth East Nordic Ski Team to the student body at Duluth East High School, to the City of Duluth, to the Nordic Ski community in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nationally and to the general public in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Use multiple forms of media such as:

  • Local newspapers
  • Nordic ski magazines
  • Web sites
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Posters

Position requirements:  A strong desire to move Nordic skiing into a mainstream sport at Duluth East and in the City of Duluth.  Success would be evident when attendance at local ski meets rivals that at ski meets in Norway.

Salary: Like most positions in Nordic Skiing - nothing, except for the warm fuzzies you get from the ski team.

Send your resume to the coaches.

Update for Holiday Practice #2

Hello again,

We have deceided to go to the Birkie trail at Double O (county road OO).  The workout will be similar to Wednesday's.  We'll meet at the trail head in the warming house at 10:00 a.m.  Bring a lunch as there are no consessions.   The trail fee is $10 per car payable in the parking lot there.

We will announce the Mesabi East team at the workout.

Once again, last chance to sign up for the Korkki Nordic Race (at Mt Itasca) will be at the practice on Friday or by emailing us.

See you on the trail,

Dave & Bonnie

Holiday Practice #2

Hello Skiers,

Yesterday's practice at Mt. Itasca was great.  It was good to see all of you there.

For Friday, we are looking at a couple of options; 1) the Birkie trail either at the North End Cabin or OO (double O) or 2) Wolverine ski trails in Ironwood, MI.  We will update the website and phone line by 6:00 p.m. today.

Also, if you haven't signed up for the Korkki Classic Race (at Mt. Itasca) on Tuesday, January 3 you can sign up at the practice on Friday or send us an e-mail by 6:00 pm on Friday.

Tuesday, December 27
Holiday Practice #1

Our first holiday practice will be at Mt. Itasca on Wednesday, December 28.  We'll meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Nordic Chalet.  Bring $5 for your trail pass and pay Bonnie.  We will be classic skiing.  Do not clean your classic skis from last week's race.  We will need the binder wax on them.  Bring a lunch or money to buy something in the Alpine Chalet (I hear they'll have good wild rice soup).  We'll ski some after lunch too.

The location for Friday's practice is still up in the air.  Mt. Itasca has a race scheduled for that day so we are looking for another location.  Do your snow dance and maybe we will be able to go to Giants Ridge.  Check back here on Thurday for Friday's details.

See you tomorrow.

Thursday, December 15

Ski Tracks

Our two practice sessions at Giants Ridge have been scheduled for Wednesday, December 28 and Friday, December 30.  Meet at 9:30 in the Sports Dorm Lobby.  Group trail tickets can be purchased for $10 in the Sports Dorm.  Wednesday will be a classic day and Friday a skate day.

We will be purchasing 20 new ski suits this winter.  They will be the same design as our current varsity suits but with a better fabric.  This is possible because of a generous donation from DEAA.  We have had some requests to buy your own personal suit. If anyone would like to do this please have a check to Bonnie for $140 made out to "Nordic Team Fund" by the end of practice on Thursday, December 17.  We also need the name or initals to be printed in the inside of the collar and waistband.
