END OF SEASON AWARDS NIGHT

Our End of Season Awards was Friday August 21 and we had a huge turnout.  Good food, friends and swimming topped off with medals and trophies, what a way to end the summer! Our Skimmer Swimmers did some amazing things this season and should all be so proud of themselves.  The first to be aknowledged were our Pollywog graduates.  The participants in Coach Cali's Pollywog Program were our newest and youngest team members and nearly every one moved up to be a Skimmer Swimmer.  Several of them participated in multiple meets with many PBs, one earned an "A" time and more than a couple were responsible for us being able to field a competitive relay in the U6 divison.  The 2009 Pollywog grads were:

Ruby Belisario, Aimee Blackwood, Breanna Fraire, Taylor Holcomb, Kylie Johnson, Samantha Hendrickson, Owen Preece, Christopher Santos, Emma VanDenBaard, Robbie Wilkinson and Eliyah Sipsy.

We had 30 swimmers this season who earned bag/towel times.  These times are the fastest of our Team Award Times.  All these swimmers have at least one time that is well below an "A" time. As a reward they are presented with a team bag or towel embroidered with their name and the team logo.  The 2009 Bag/Towel awardees were:

Beverly Ayers, Brendan Barrett, Jenna Brittner, Ryan Burris, Kevin Charvoz, Marcella Daniels, David Darrin-Bascomb, Vincent Despain, Maryfrances, DiMaggio, Kaila Dodson, Megan Donohue, Adrian Michael Dulay, James Ebert, Carter Haines, Shelby Harrison, Fiona James, Cheyenne Lee, Long Le, Shannon McMillan, Marvin Munguia, Carter Osborne, Natalie Perez, Whitney Perez, Matthew Satyadi, Gloria Mia Solorio, Dana Stormes, Christopher Tennow, Haylely Thaning, Anna Wareckiy and Ashlyn Wareckiy.

We award a High Point and a Most Improved trophy in each division and age group for both girls and boys.  High Point goes to the swimmer who earned the most points for the team in either the "A" or "B" division.  The Most Improved awards go to the swimmers with the largest improvement in time from the first swim of the season until the  end.  These swimmers also must compete in a minimum of six meets for the team.  The winners of the 2009 High Point awards were:

For the "A" Division: Jenna Brittner and David Darrin-Bascomb in 6 and Unders; Maryfrances DiMaggio and James Ebert in 7/8s; Natalie Perez and Vincent Despain in 9/10s; Beverly Ayers and Zachary Ziel in 11/12s; Whitney Perez and Marvin Munguia in 13/14s and Fiona James and Brendan Barrett in 15/18s.

For the "B" Division we had: Daniela Ortiz and Robbie Wilkinson in 6 and unders; Madison Johnson and William Stuart in 7/8s; Leeza Davis and Max Ortiz in 9/10s; Ashlyn Wareckiy and Morgan Osborne in 11/12s; Makahla McCarty and Ryan Burris in 13/14s and Hayley Thaning and Chris Tennow in 15/18s.

The Most Improved awards went to the following swimmers in the "A" division:

Gloria Mia Solorio, Adrian Dulay, Kaila Dodson, Shea Schuring, Ashley Johnson, Josh Ebert, Marcella Daniels, David Satyadi, Rachel Harrison, Craig Robinson, Kyla Robinson and Carter Haines.

In the "B" division we had:

Cat O'Connor, Christopher Santos, Caroline Preece, Marc Ortega, Maloni Floriolli, Hudson Preece, Megan Haggard, Justin Padilla, Emily Haggard, Kevin Cudney, Nelly O'Flynn and Jason Foster.

In addition to High Point and Most Improved our team has three special awards that go to swimmers who show tremendous team spirit, enthusiasm, sportsmanship, work ethic and improvement.  These swimmers are also role models to their teammates and examples to our swimming community of what it means to be a Skimmer Swimmer.  They are selected by the coaches and board for their outstanding contributions to the team.

The Coaches Award for 2009 went to:

Marvin Munguia and Taylor Brittner

The Scott Chapman Award was created in honor of Scott Chapman.  Scott joined the Skimmers in 1985 at the age of 7.  He was the oldest son in the Chapman family and big brother to Julia Chapman, former Skimmer and ADS head coach.  Scott's favorite stroke was Butterfly.  He swam until age 14 and then played water polo for his high school.  Scott is remembered as always having fun and being enthusiastic about swimming.  He was a fish in the water, always happy and loved to swim.  He was competitive, yet had tremendous sportsmanship.  He always strived to improve and encouraged others to always do their best.  Tragically. Scott Chapman died August 8, 1996 in a car accident.  The Antioch Delta Skimmers recognize Scott as a true Skimmer swimmer whose values and dedication to swimming embody all that we hope our swimmers strive for.  Each year the Antioch Delta Skimmers recognize one all-around exceptional ADS swimmer and award him or her with the Chapman Award.  The Chapman Award is given to a swimmer who is dedicated to swimming, always striving to do their best to improve, great role model to others and willing and eager to accept coaching and direction.

The Scott Chapman Memorial Award for 2009 went to:

Alyson Albanese

The next honorees were our County Qualifiers.  These swimmers all swam at least one time in one stroke that earned them a spot at the Contra Costa County Championships.  This is the largest and most prestigious meet in the county and the times for qualification change and get faster each year.  We had ten swimmers qualify in 2009.

Brendan Barrett, Fiona James, Carter Haines, Chris Tennow, Matthew Satyadi, Marvin Munguia, Beverly Ayers, Anna Wareckiy, Natalie Perez and Jenna Brittner.

We had two records set this season and each was broken  more than once.  Our record breakers for 2009 were;

Brendan Barrett in the 100 Fly for 15/18 boys and our 15/18 boys Medley Relay team of Brendan Barrett, Christopher Tennow, Carter Haines and Jeremy LaDue.  These boys are the fastest in our team's 51 year history!!!

Our final award goes to the swimmers who have been members of our team for at least seven consecutive years with at least one year in 15/18s.  The recipients of the Hall of Fame award for 2009 were:

Ileana Munguia, Carter Haines and Jeremy LaDue

Good job all Skimmer Swimmers.  Thank you to all our parent volunteers.  We would have no team and no award winners without all the work that goes on behind the scenes  by all our wonderful Skimmer Supporters.

Please take the time to fill out the end of season survey so we can continue to do what works and improve where we need to.

INFORMATION TO MAKE YOUR SEASON GO SMOOTHLY

Swimmer participation is important to develop team unity and earn points towards a team victory.  There will be a Sign-in/Sign-out book available on the pool deck during practice.  Parents/Swimmers need to fill out the book  at least TWO weeks prior to a scheduled meet.  Our meet entries are all done by parent volunteers via the computer.  Those entries must then be sent to the other team. With sometimes close to 300 swimmers total this can be time consuming and we (or the computer contact at the away pool) are unable to accomodate frequent last minute additions, withdrawls and changes to entries.  If you do not sign-in or sign-out we will assume that you are not able to attend the meet. If a swimmer becomes ill or is unexpectedly unable to attend a meet at the last minute, that swimmer or parent should contact the board or coaches as soon as possible through the hotline or e-mail.  Empty lanes due to no-shows at our meets mean a loss of points for the team and a missed chance for someone else to swim another event.  It can also mean 3 other swimmers miss a chance to swim in a relay.

In league/dual meets, swimmers may swim up to 3 individual events and two relays.  The participation of a swimmer in any event is by coaches’ decision, based on a variety of factors.  We will try to post the meet entries a day or two before the meet, so swimmers and parents will know their swim schedule prior to the beginning of the meet.  Most swim clubs mandate that meets be finished within a three hour time limit, so not all swimmers will be able to swim their maximum allowable entries (another reason to let us know if you will not be there).

Swimmers that have achieved “A” times, in previous league meets or invitationals for specific events, will not be allowed to participate in “B” meets in those events in their age group.  We will try to accomodate "A" swimmers moving up to a higher age group only if there are available slots.  So "A" swimmers, please still continue to sign-in to "B" meets.  "B" swimmers will not get bumped from a "B" meet for an "A" swimmer.  Swimmers that haven’t achieved “A” times might still be asked to swim “A” meets, so please sign-in to a meet but check the entries prior to the meet.  Qualifying times are posted on the web site and in the handbook (look under rule/records/times tab then go to Skimmer Handbook).

    Parent Volunteers

It is very important for parents to volunteer during meets.  We will not be able to run our meets without a full staff of volunteers.  Signups for all meets will be available on the pool deck daily. We have a variety of jobs to fill; timers, ribbon writers, computer, starter, judges, shepherds for the younger swimmers as well as snack bar.  All parents of swimmers, not in the 15-18 group, are required to volunteer during the meet (both home and away) in which their child is swimming.    Your swimmer may not swim if there is no family or family representative fulfilling the family work requirement.  While this is harsh it is necessary to ensure fairness to all our Skimmer families.
