Del Mar Field Hockey: Incoming Freshman FAQ
Del Mar Field Hockey

Incoming Freshman Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why field hockey?

A: Glad you asked. :) We have fun! Field hockey tends to attract a very high achieving group of girls and they usually become good friends. Starting out your high school career playing sports gives you a group of people (including upperclassmen) you already know. We have team dinners, go to college games, and do other things that most teams don't do. Most people who try field hockey find that it becomes their favorite sport!

Q: I have never played field hockey before. Is that okay?

A: You are in luck! No one has ever played before, besides in small summer camps. That is what is so great about it, everyone starts on the same level. If you want to try the sport out before you get to high school, check out the 4 day camp we have at the end of June for 5th-9th grade girls!

Q: I don't even have a stick! I don't know where to get one! How am I going to play?

A: DO NOT BUY EQUIPMENT BEFORE YOU TRY OUT. We have sticks we can lend you. We will help you get everything you need to play. When the teams are finally set, then we will talk about getting your own equipment.

Q: When are high school tryouts?

A: Every high school starts their official practices on the second Monday of August, though some do conditioning before that. If you will be attending Del Mar, keep checking the website for practice dates and times. You can always call Mr. Sampson at 264-2373 or email staceymsampson@yahoo.com for more info.

Q: Can I do other things AND play field hockey?

A: Our girls do TONS OF THINGS including ASB, CSF, Key Club, Homecoming Court, plays, yearbook, journalism, and lots of other things. The only things school policy doesn't allow you to do are cheerleading, dance team, or another fall sport (tennis or volleyball). This is not negotiable. There is simply not time for classes and field hockey and cheer.

Q: Do I have to go to Del Mar to go to the camp?

A: Definitely not. The camp does not have to do with the Del Mar team, we just want to teach girls how to play field hockey. We encourage girls coming from and going to any school! Bring your friends from any school.

What does it cost to play field hockey?

A: Every athlete in every sport has to pay for transportation, which is currently $50 per sport they play. On the field hockey team work hard every year to fundraise to cover transportation so that your money is better spent on team sweatshirts, pictures, etc. We hold an annual one-day garage sale at the coaches' house which generally covers the cost of the transportation fee.
