Scott West Looking Like Witasick
Scott West did what few people could ever do and few people would ever want to do. Down on the Florida MSBL trip last month, Scott West stepped up on the mound and stopped the bleeding for the Delaware Pirates and pitched 6 innings of relief while giving up zero runs in a 7-4 loss to the Berks Bombers. The next morning he took the mound again and pitched a gem against the DC Mustangs and secured a 6-1 win. With this being a double header day, he started the second game of the double header and provided a 4-2 win against the Columbus Reds. All of these games are 9 innings so the total innings for consecutive innings pitched over basically 24 hours for Scott was 24 straight innings with two wins and a no decision. Now that is sick. Not bad for a days work.

Joe Morales Takes Over Second PLace For All Time Hit Leader
Joe Morales achieved another milestone tonight in his Delaware Semi-Pro Baseball League career at Banning Park, leading his Buccos to a 9-3 victory over Walter's Fine Collectibles. Joe had 2 line-drive singles to left-centerfield, scored 2 runs, and had a sacrifice fly RBI to add icing on the cake! Joe came into the game tied for 2nd place on the All-Time Delaware Semi-Pro Baseball League with the immortal Bert Talley, both with 768 hits. Joe flied out in his 1st at-bat, but in his 2nd at-bat in the top of the 3rd inning he hit a line drive single to leftfield for career hit number 769, surpassing Bert Talley. Bert was coaching 1st base for the Buccos tonight and after Joe got his hit to surpass Bert Talley on the hit list, Bert showed the classy guy that he is, and always has been, by shaking hands with Joe, applauding for him, and patting him on the back. As a matter of fact, the game was stopped for a minute or two, as the fans, including me, gave him quite an ovation. Joe's Buccos teammates were all applauding for him, and in a real classy act, the entire Walter's Fine Collectibles team applauded for Joe too. They saved the ball for Joe. Joe got that hit at exactly 6:49 P.M. It kind of reminded me of August 10, 1981, when Pete Rose hit a single to leftfield off of Cardinals reliever Mark Littell, to break Stan Musiual's National League hit record, and then Stan Musiual came onto the field to congratulate Pete Rose, similar to what Bert Talley did tonight. I am proud to have witnessed both events. Joe's 2 hits tonight were off of William Penn graduate Merle Sterner. The Buccos play tomorrow night at 18th and Van Buren, aka "The Mecca". I will be there to see Joe continue his quest to surpass the All-Time Delaware Semi-Pro Baseball League hits leader, Bob Immediato. Congratulations Joe, Jerry Horgan.

Composite Bats Deemed Illegal in our League
As everyone knows we go by the rules of Major League Baseball and more specifically, the American League rules. Bamboo, Two Piece, and Composite bats have been deemed illegal. Many bats have been seen in game use and will be acted upon by the umpires.
From an e-mail with the Umpire Association:
After checking with Dave Farone DIAA and IBUA rules interpreter, the composite bat IS illegal -- yes, if discovered/challenged BEFORE next pitch the batter is called out -- any advancement by runner(s) is nullified and returned to original base -- hope this gives insight to the question. IBUA
Brett Brothers bats, Dimarini bats, Baboo bats, and bats from Louisville with the Coating over top with the Rings located at the sweet spot are some of the examples of the illegal bats.

Please Keep Max Beheler and His Family in Your Prayers
Rose Beheler passed away into the arms of God this morning. Rose was a sweet woman that deeply loved her family. Rose was the real general Manager of the Home Budget/Mattress team and would constantly tell Max Beheler (Manager of Home Mattress) who should and should not play as the season progressed.
Please pray for peace for the family of Rose Beheler in this time of need.

Billy Phillips Passed Away Today After His Year Long Battle
Billy Phillips was drafted by the Dodgers in the early 80's and played also for Gildea's Raiders after his professional
career. Billy was a leader on the field and commanded the game when the ball was in his hands. Billy was a hard thrower
with a very good slider and was never afraid to come inside to to take his plate back away from the hitters. Billy was a
great player and person that played for Brandywine, Health South and Canada Dry in the Delaware Semi-Pro Baseball
League where he compiled a Win/Loss record of 82-53. He pitched in 215 games while throwing 93 complete games and
shutting out teams 15 times over his career. Bily Finished 3rd overall for wins with his 82 wins. He will be greatly missed
by his family and friends. We will miss you "Lips".
Funeral will be Wednesday, February 9th 10:30 AM at Grace Church across from the Concord Mall on Rt. 202.

6'0" 205lbs Throw: Right Bat: Right, I am 18 years old a recent graduate of McKean High School and looking for a team to continue my career with. I play first base mainly but can play all postions, just some with a little less ease. I prefer the corners, I can hit to all fields, and in the gaps with ease. I cant say I have any honors seeing as though I went to McKean, but I had a great junior and senior year. I'm looking to walk on at Del-Tech or some college when the next season begins, so I'd like somewhere to play for now, with the highest skill level possible

Behind The Dugout, with Jerry Horgan
Ethan, the Phillies are on a torrid stretch! I think they have won 20 of their last 25 games. And with all of their decimated injuries this year, that makes it all that more amazing! It is "The Perfect Storm"! I just saw the Braves get another walk-off victory tonight, that really pissed me off. The Braves will not lose at home. Well, Ethan, I know you are a Delaware Semi-Pro League historian, last night I went to the final Semi-Pro League game of the year, at Dickinson High School no less, Duffie's Lions defeated Pro-Pyhsical Therapy 7-2, to win Game 5 of the best of 5 finals. That new format sucks. The 1st pitch was thrown at 6:01 P.M last night, the last out was made at 7:32 P.M.! Even though the games last only 7 innings, and there were 9 runs scored in the game, the game was played at a very crisp pace. This is one of my saddest nights of the year, with the final Semi-Pro League game being played last night and I am sure you know my other saddest night, or day of the year, the final Phillies game of the year. But there were 2 exceptions to that Phillies thing, October 21, 1980, when they won their 1st World Series, and October 29, 2008, when they won their 2nd World Series! I feel blessed, because of the only 2 World Series that the Phillies have ever won, they did it at home! And I was right there at the ballparks to witness all of it, not to mention all of the video that I have of all of it, including the entire parade down Broad Street, and into a packed JFK Stadium, now the site of the Wells Fargo Center/ Comcast Sportsnet Studios. Ethan, if I were to get hit by a bus tomorrow and die, I would die a happy man, having witnessed 2 Phillies World Championships! Hope my spelling was okay, take care Ethan, Jerry.

BOXSCORE Spreadsheet Available For Teams To Use MANDATORY TO GET STATS IN
Please look at the spreadsheet that I have created for the league to use. Save the spreadsheet to your harddrive and then input your game data. Save the document (Click on the Handout "BOXSCORE" and then click on the file "BOXSCORE" and it will ask you to dowload it to your harddrive). I would suggest having the date in the name of the file when you save the games. Always name the file different after each time so you don't lose your data.
Please send the document electronically (Fax or e-mail) to the News Journal, Max Beheler and myself. I can keep the stats current if everyone sends them to me. People complain because we do not have stats completed, but you have to remember that we have to get them to compile them. Send them daily so I can keep up on them.
Remember if you have 2 players with the same last name on the team, always put the first initial in the stats. Even if the other player isn't there.

Not Doing a Good Job With Reporting Scores and Stats
Sorry to be a pain, but I have been getting grief about the website not being updated. I have only recieved 12 boxscores so far nad I have put those scores into the website. 39 games have been played to this date and out of that I have only recieved 12. 69% are still missing out there and the fans and players do not get to see what is going on with the league. A lot of people look at this site as a reference point for games schedules and standings.
Please subnit a copy to Batdoctor@comcast.net when a game is completed in addition to sending it to teh News Journal and Max Beheler.

PLASTEK HITS FOR CYCLE TO SPARK C. WALACE
Stan Plastek hit for the cycle, going 5-for-5 with a grand-slam home run, as C.Wallace Insurance bombed Wilmington Truck Body 21-6 in a Delaware Semi-pro Baseball League game at 18th and Van Buren Monday.
Paul Niggebrugge went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBI for first-place C. Wallace, 15-4, and Dave Lawson won his fifth game against one defeat.
Bob Carpenter and Kevin Shockley had two RBI each for Wilmington Truck Body, 2-19.
This game took place on 7/11/1983. It has been updated to the record book as the hitting for the cycle was over looked in the record book. Only two players have hit for the cycle in Delaware Semi-pro history. Stan Plastek did it in 1983 and Bill Falasco did it in 1969 for Canada Dry.

A New Base On Balls Record Was Set On Opening Day

The previous record was recorded in 1981 on May 26th in a game between Delaware Stars and C. Wallace Insurance.

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the (bad word removed) plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

STARS WIN THE TITLE
Highlights - Gildeas Stars won the best of seven championship Behind the arm of J. R. McAllistar and the
Bat of Ryan Griffin. McAllistar threw a complete game, giving up 2 hits and striking out 12. Ryan Griffins'
3 run home run in the first inning was all the offense the Stars needed.
Congrats to the Stars, Billy Cannon and Bob Gildea for a great end to a great season.

Stars Took Game 3
Gildeas Stars took game three of the championship series in another
extra inning game. The Raiders got on the board in the first inning on a solo home
run by Billy DiIenno, but that was all winning pitcher Steve Messick would allow as
he threw a complete game, walking 2 and striking out 9. The Stars tied the score
in the 5th as Josh Dean walked, stole second, advanced to third on an errant throw
and scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the ninth, the Stars loaded the bases
with a hit batter, single and fielding error. With one out, Mike Godwin drew a bases
loaded walk to end the game.
Wednesday, August 19
Raiders win Game 2
Raiders scored 6 runs in the 6th inning to beat the Stars 8-2 to even up the series.
The raiders took advantage of sloppy play in the bottom of the 6th to even the series at one game apiece. A great pitching matchup between two of the leagues’ best pitchers, the Raiders’ Brett Urban and the Stars’ J. R. McAllistar, it was the Raiders who took advantage of 4 errors in the bottom of the six to get the win. Up to that point, the Stars held a 2-0 advantage on an RBI single by Frank Devonshire in the second and an unearned run in the 4th. Both pitchers held serve until the 6th, when the wheels came off the Star’s wagon defensively. 4 errors and 7 runs later, the game was no longer in doubt. Urban quietly retired the side in the 7th for the win. Offensively, The Raiders were led by Doug Eitleman and Jose Rivera who each had two hits.

Down The Lines With Jerry Horgan
| Mark, I wish I could clone myself and be at both games tonight. But, I will be at your game tonight at Banning Park. I have more friends on your team, like you and Mark DeCaro. Also, I want to be there to show my support for Max, who suffered a horrible family tragedy recently. Max is as stoic as they come, he never changes his facial expression. You would never know if Home Budget, or I should say Home Matress now, if they were winning by 10 runs, or losing by 10 runs. That is what makes a great manager. I know you remember Larry Bowa, former Padres and Phillies manager, and every time the TV camera would show him you always knew by his facial expressions how the game was going. My prediction for tonight is that the best player in the league, Mike Walls, gets a game-winning walk off hit in the bottom of the 7th inning, winning the game 3-2 off of Brett Urban. I would guess that it will be a matchup of aces, Dave Mullin for your team, and Brett Urban for the Gidea's Raiders, with the rainout on Wednesday, and the off-day on Thursday night. I took a drive up to Citizen's Bank Ballpark on Thursday morning, went to the Majestic Clubhouse store, and bought 3 items, paying $308.00 for them. The best one was a very large picture of the last out of the 2008 World Series, then the pile-up on the mound, and it has me in the picture, 9 rows behind the Phillies dugout. It cost $149.00, but I swear it is the best $149.00 that I ever spent! It is hanging on my living room wall right now, but I will bring it to Banning Park tonight to show you, Bert, Max, and Bill Dilenno. Mark, you and Bert Talley have given me some of the best Semi-Pro thrills in my 41 year career. Just last year, when I believe you were 44 years old (Actually 41), in the finals at Banning Park, you hit a 3-run homer way, way, over the left field fence. Some spectators, including me, estimate that mammoth shot to be about 500 feet! That is just allegedly on the distance though, just like when I, at the tender age of 10, was "allegedly" retrieving foul balls at 18th and Van Buren, AKA "The Mecca", and throwing them back at 70 miles per hour! Also, my 2 biggest thrills in my 41 years of watching the Semi-Pro Games, well number 1 would have to be on Tuesday, August 21, 1991, when in game 7 of the finals when Bert Talley, not known as a power hitter, with his Brandywine team losing by 2 runs in the top of the 7th innining, with darkness setting in, hit one into the rightfield woods at "The Mecca", which led to Brandywine winning the championship! My 2nd biggest thrill came back in 1973, the 1 year that Bert Talley played for Parkway, when with once again darkness setting in, Bert came to bat in the bottom of the 7th inning in a tie game, 2 outs, a runner on either 2nd or 3rd base, 1st base was open, so the pitcher was intentionally walking Bert, or at least trying to. Well, as fate would have it, one of those pitches came a little bit to close to home plate and Bert reached out and hit one of those patented Rod Carew singles to leftfield to win the game! Legendary Parkway manager John Hickman, with the scorebook in 1 hand and a Kool cigarrette in the other hand, I think he must have smoked 3 packs of Kools that night, came running down from the 3rd base coaching box screaming "Eight of clock lightning, Eight of clock lightning", over and over again. It was one of my most memorable nights in my 41 years of following the Semi-Pro League. Anyone that is reading this feel free to come on out tonight at Banning Park where my normal spot is right by the first base bag, and I will bring plenty of "sodas". See you tonight Mark, Jerry Horgan. |

Stars Grab Game 1
Gildea's Stars took game one in the championship series in an 8 inning thriller. Gildea's Raiders took a 2 run lead into the top of the 7th on an rbi single by Mark Moser and an infield error. The Stars came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game on an rbi triple by Brian Short and a fielding error. Home Mattress Center Cliches The Season Title
Home Mattress took the Season Title last night with a 3-0 win against the Bucco's. Clint Kuhl threw a complete game shut out and helped Home Budget win its second Season Title in its history. With the score tied 0-0 in the 5th inning, Marc Decaro ripped a 2 RBI double down the right field line. This win give Home Mattress it's second Cartwright Trophy over the past 3 seasons.
Bucco's face elimination from the play-offs with no games remaining on thier schedule, but still have a shot for a "Play In" game if Damiani Tile losses the rest of their games. Damiani has 3 more games. In this league, it has happended before. They was a 3 way tie for 4th place a few years ago and I believe the Bucco's were involved in that 3 way tie.

Jerry Horgan Stuck at 1,065
Jerry took his normal position at a Delaware Semi-Pro game, just to the left of the left field line. Most players play between the lines, but Jerry is definitely in the Delaware Semi-pro Hall of fame for Most Foul Balls retrieved in the history of the DSPBL. It was a bad night for Jerry, in that he did not get any foul balls last night at Rockford Park. So on the foul ball meter, it remains at 1,065. trying to get Jerry to start submitting stories about this league and its players past and present. Between Jerry and Bert Talley, there would be some great stories and remembrances.

Ground Rule at Rockford and Canby
There are a few weird ground rules in our league since we play on open fields most of the time. At Rockford Park, if a ball is hit down the left field line and rolls foul after 3rd base and before the crest of the hill that is 322' away, it is to be ruled a ground rule double. If it lands fair in left field and rolls foul after the crest of the hill it will be all the runner can get. On any of the fields (except for Dickinson, Banning and DelCastle) at the end of the foul fence a ball that is caught after the fence should be ruled an out if the fielder does not go into the dead area at a 90 degree angle from the fence line. If you catch and carry into the dead ball area the ball is deemed dead and no runners can advance.
The following excerpt is taken from the Delaware Semi Pro baseball rules regarding Canby and Rockford. The flags or cones should be placed at the top of the hill in left field. If no Flag or cone is placed out there it is the umpires discretion to determine if it went out before or after the crest of the hill.
3. Trees within The Defined Playing Area
Any fair or foul butted ball landing in any tree within the defined playing area shall be considered “in play” with a catch being allowed as long as the ball is not impeded in its natural trajectory by branch, leaf, or tree trunk.
6. Fair Batted Balls Bouncing Into Foul Territory.
a. With respect to the left field foul flags at Canby Park and Rockford Park, and the right field foul flag at 18th and Van Buren, any fair batted ball bouncing into foul territory before these foul flags shall limit the runners to two bases, with the runners advancing said two bases at their own peril. Play is dead once the runners reach their second advanced base. The batter-runner is the determining factor.
b Any fair batted ball bouncing into foul territory beyond the left field foul flags at Canby Park and Rockford Park, and the right field foul flag at 18th and Van Buren, or any fair batted ball bouncing into foul territory in right field at Canby Park and Rockford Park and in left field at 18th and Van Buren, shall not limit the runners and the runners may advance any number of bases at their own peril,

Last Friday a Record was Set For Most Hits In A Game Between Two Teams
Bucco's and Hy-Point met last week at Rockford Park and had a marathon of hits. So many hits, that it is a new record for "Most Hits in A Game Between Two Teams". 34 hits were compiled between the two teams last Friday. Bucco's had 12 hits and Hy-Point had 22. The previous record was held by two teams. In 1966, Parkway beat Canada Dry 26-6 and 32 hits were banged out in this game. C. Wallace Insurance and Canada Dry also had 32 hits in 1993 in a single game.
Most Hits by a Team in a single game is 26 by Parkway in 1966.
Andre Duffie needs two more Triples to set the record for most Triples in a season. He set the Freshman Record at Delaware with 9 and had 3 in one game vs. Hofstra May 1, 1995.
