2010 Delaware B.A.S.S. State Team Qualifier - Results

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation held its 2010 State Team Qualifier this past weekend (10/11 and 10/12) on the Nantiocke River, the site of the 2010 B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional, scheduled for September 2010.

The field of 45 competitiors found very little trouble weighing in limts for each of the 2 days of competition. Brian LaClair with Three Ponds Bassmasters took control on day 1 with a solid limit including the day's lunker with a 5.82 pound largemouth bass. Brian held on with another solid limit on Day 2 to capture 1st place on the team.

Larry Taylor, also of Three Ponds Bassmasters, posted good numbers on Day 1 and found the Day 2 lunker with a 3.51 pound largemouth bass that helped push him into 2nd place overall in the tournament.

Rounding out the top 12 places were Robert Smith, Jay Walls, Jim Short, Bobby Austin, Jeff Semans, Greg Alexander, Jay Pirollo, Fabian Rodriguez, Mark Hogan, and Roger Shirkey Sr. 1st alternate will be Marlon Algier.

Denault advances to the Federation Nation Championship

Tidewater's Don Denault leads the Delaware team and is headed for Sunny Florida!

Don Denault worked his way to the top of the standings after a tight battle with Jim Short for the lead at the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional in West Virgina last week. Both anglers should be applauded for finding quality fish on a less than perfect body of fish catching water, the Ohio River.

More impressive, Don finished 3rd overall in the tournament comprised of 72 anglers from 6 states including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The team from Virginia took 1st place team honors and a new $30,000 Skeeter/Yamaha boat package. Delaware finished 5th as a team.

From here, Don Denault heads to the Harris Chain of Lakes in Florida in November to the National Championship, and potentially winning a shot to fish the Bassmaster Classic in February of 2010!

Congratulations Don and Good Luck!

Thayer and Houghton Take 1st Place on the Upper Bay...

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation held its 4th Open team tournament of the year on the Upper Bay launching out of Turner's Creek on the Sassafras River. The field saw plenty of action on this mildly hot summer day with 3/4 of the teams bringing in 5-fish limits.

The 1st place team of Ed Thayer and Paul Houghton, newcomers to the circuit, loaded the boat with a great bag of fish weighing 17.08 pounds. In 2nd place was the team of Greg Alexander and Jay Walls with a 5-fish limit for 16.75 pounds, and rounding out 3rd was the team of Don Denault and Glen Pittman.

The day's lunker was a 5.03 pound largemouth bass caught by the team of Richard and Andrew Mills.

The 5th and final tournament of the year will be on the Pocomoke River in Snow Hill, MD on August 2nd. Just as a reminder these tournaments are open to the public and anyone that meets the eligibility requirments in the tournament rules may enter.

Rhem and Smith take 1st on the Potomac River

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation held its 2nd open team tournament of the year on Sunday May 3rd at the Potomac River out of Smallwood State park. We saw an extremely low attendance record at this event but nonetheless, someone went home with more money than when they arrived.

The 1st place prize of $350 went to the team of Doug Rhem and Stacey Smith, along with a lunker check for $50. the pair weighed in a 5-fish limit of bass for 15.25.

The 2nd place award went to the team of Jay Walls and Greg Alexander, weighing a 5-fish limit of 14.04.

3rd place went to the team of Mike Morris and Shelton Walters, who weighed a 4-fish limit of bass totaling 10.73.

The next tournament scheduled is on the Nanticoke River launching out of Phillips Landing in Laurel on June 20th.

Essick and Pirollo claim victory at the Link's Marine Open on the Upper Bay...

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation wrapped up its 1st tournament of the new season Sunday April 26th on the Upper Chesapeak Bay. Just a week after the BASS Northern Division Open, in which the bay saw close to 200 boats and more scatter across its flats and creeks, the results were very nearly the same. the tournament sponsored by Link's Marine in Newark, kicked off at 7AM out of Anchor Marina with a reduced field of only 16 boats. The economy appears to have the numbers down, but the payout, thanks in part to Link's Marine Bonus Bucks of $500 to winner,  is just a great as last year's event.

On a day when the bite was found to be a bit tough for the keeper size fish, a few teams managed to find some good fish, as always. The 1st place finishing team of Duane Essick and Jay Pirollo, both of Diamond State Bassmasters, brought a healthy 5-fish limit to the scales weighing 16.29 pounds. 1st place award including the Link's Marine Bonus Bucks went to the team in the amount of $1,172.

The 2nd place finishing team of Mark Hogan and Tony Kibler, of Tidewater Bass Club, found enough good fish to make a great showing at the scales to bring a total of 5 fish in for 13.14 pounds. Three Ponds Bassmasters anglers Mike Morris and Brian Leclair finish out the top three with a 4 fish bag weighing 10.56.

Honorable mention goes out to the team of Tim Stump and Jeff Horvath for the day's lunker, a largemouth bass weighing 4.50 pounds, that earned a nice big bass payout of $160.

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation would also like to thank Tim and Jeff for their efforts as Tournament Directors, as well as Bob Wallace, the DBFN Conservation Director, for supplying and setting up the fish holding tanks for the weigh-in. Your work is appreciated.

The next stop on the Delaware BASS Federation Nation trail is theh Potomac River on May 3rd, launching from Smallwood State Park in Maryland.

Disappointment after the Day 1 Cancellation...

Delaware's Greg Alexander Falls Short of the Classic Berth

The B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Championship concluded Saturday after a disappointing week filled with postponements, delays and cancellations during the practice period and official competition days. The weather in Kansas in November proved a worthy adversary for anglers on the water, as they awaited their chances at taking the next step towards earning their Classic berth and representing their repsective divisions of the Federation Nation.

The cancellation of the official practice day and the postponement of day 1 action, an eventual cancellation itself, set the stage for a very tough week on the water. Competition commenced on day 2 and day 3 competition was again postponed until saturday. The weather effects certainly took it's toll on anglers both physically and mentally.

Delaware's Greg Alexander faced an even tougher battle after day 2 finding himself fishless and in 3rd place in the Mid-Atlantic standings behind divisional leader Dave Halcomb and 2nd place Ken Baumgartner, each with single fish for 2-02 and 1-11 respectively.

Day 3 left the door open for any and all contenders on this tough fishery. A valiant effort was put forth by Alexander to catapult him atop the division by bringing in two fish for 4-12, but another pair of fish caught by Pennsylvania's Baumgartner for 4-7 sealed the deal for the Pennsylvania champion.

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation extends our sincere congratulations and special thanks to Greg Alexander on a strong finish and for representing the Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation with true professionalism.

Greg Alexander Wins the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Divisional at Kerr Reservoir

by Andy Crawford, BASS Senior Writer

CLARKSVILLE, Va. — Greg Alexander visited John H. Kerr Lake a month before the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional, and put together a solid pattern. By the time official practice began, however, Alexander knew he would have to throw that out and start all over.

"When I was here a month ago, I was catching 15 pounds," the Delaware Federation Nation member said. "I was fishing the main run up the river, but with (Tropical Storm Hannah), I knew that was trash."

Essick and Porillo Find a Way to Pull Off the Win...

Two new faces stole the show at the Nanticoke River Open Team tournament, the 3rd Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Open this year. On this Father's Day which drew a smaller attendance than the previous Opens, Dwayne Essick and partner Jay Porillo, locked up a first place finish with a fantastic sack of fish, in Naticoke River terms, weighing 12.49 pounds. The bite on the Nanticoke has been a bit tougher this year as teams are finding out, but as always someone will figure them out.

Taking honors in 2nd place is the team of Mark Hogan and Aaron Kibler, both of  Tidewater Bass Club in Milford with 5 fish weighing 11.21 pounds, another good limit of fish for a lunker challenged river such as the Nanny. Following up in 3rd place was the team of Greg Alexander and Jay Walls, also of Tidewater, with 5 fish weighing 10.31 pounds.

An honorable mention again to Dwayne Essick and Jay Porillo for landing the day's lunker weighing a mere 3.54 pounds.

The next and last Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation open Team Tournament for 2008 will be held on the Pocomoke River launching out of Byrd Park in Snow Hill, MD on Sunday August 3rd. The draw meeting will be held Wednesday July 30th at 7:00PM at the Paradee Center in Dover. late registrations will be held at the ramp the morning of the tournament, prior to launch. A Recurring Theme on the Choptank River...

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation held its second team tournament of the year on Sunday May 4th. The tournament launched out of Martinak State Park on the Choptank River in Denton at 6AM. A total of 12 teams competed for a top prize of $588 for 1st place. Topping the field of the 12 team anglers were once again, Jay Walls and Greg Alexander weighing in a healthy bag of 14.64 pounds of fish to take 1st place.  Finishing 2nd overall was the team of Mark Hogan and Jordy Zimmerman weighing in a nice 4-fish bag going for 11.88 pounds.  The Lunker payout of $120 also went to the 1st place team as Jay and Greg weighed in a 3.89 pound largemouth, topping Mark and Jordy's larget fish by a mere .07 pounds! Congratulations! The rest of the field stuggled to weigh-in any keeper-sized fish on this beautiful early May day.

The DBFN paid out a total of $960 for a field of 12 boats. Not a bad day's work.

Final results are attached below...

The next DBFN Open Team Tournament will be held on the Nanticoke  River launching out of Phillips Landing in Laurel on Sunday June 15th. Late Registrations will be accepted at the ramp prior to launch...

The team of Rob Hager and Dan Capano followed up the leaders with a 3rd place finishing total of 17.32 pounds. The 2006 Delaware B.A.S.S. Federation Nation State Team represented Delaware in its usual strong fashion as the team managed a 2nd place finish among some very tough competitors in the Mid-Atlantic Divisional tournament held on the Potomac River September 27th thru 29th. The individual results and quest for the bid to go on to fish the Federation Nation National Championship held plenty of drama as two of Delaware's top anglers tied in the 3-day individual competition. Greg Alexander and JT Fitzgerald, both of Tidewater Bassmasters tallied a 3-day total of 12 fish weighing 26 pounds 14 ounces. Greg won the 3rd tie breaker (largest total daily weight) and is headed on the National Championship. Congratulations to both anglers for their fine performance and representation.
