Great book and coaching tip
This winter I stumpled upon a great book called "Soccerhead, an accidental journey into the heart of the American Game" by Jim Haner. Many can relate to this "accidential journey" having no idea what the sport was about prior to our kids playing. I am one one of those who never understood soccer but here I am President of DCSA & have now coached for 7+ years! Aside from it being a great book he had one of the best coaching tips I have ever read;
The author was at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention and Anson Dorrance (coach of UNC women's team which had a 532-25-15 record under him & he was Mia Hamm's coach) was giving a seminar on the method's he uses to turn his practices at UNC into a "competitvie cauldron". This is used to boil off the pretenders and temper the survivors. Anyway a youth coach asked him when he should turn up the heat on his kids back home. He replied "I don't think junior year in high school is a moment too soon for a coach to start thinking about these things". Another great coach, Tony DiCicco (Passadena) said "... the best way to coach kids that age (youth soccer) is just to let 'em play."
Food for thought coaches!
