Assignment of players to divisions of play
Assignment of players to divisions of play – Dallas Center Grimes Little League

Little League is a developmental League.
The assignment of players to a division is based on their League Age* and skill level, and the number of players in the divisions.
Example: If a player has never played in the Minor division, it is not automatic that a player 12 years of age will be assigned to a Majors division roster based solely on age.
*League Age is defined as players age on the 1st of April.

Per Local Option-Board has defined division ages to be:
•        Players   5   to   6   years of age are eligible to play in the Tee Ball division.
•        Players   7    to 8   years of age are eligible to play in the Machine Pitch division.
•        Players   9   to 12 years of age are eligible to play in the Minor League division.
•        Players   11 to 12 years of age are eligible to play in the Major League division.
•        Players 13 to 14 years of age are eligible to play in the Junior League division.
•        Players 15 to 16 years of age are eligible to play in the Senior League division.
•        Players 16 to 18 years of age are eligible to play in the Big League division.

Change of Division Request
All of the following situations (Requests) need to be submitted by players parents in writing to the League Player Agent(s).

•        A player who is league age 6 for the current season and has played a year in Tee Ball may “play up" in the Machine Pitch division with board approval.

•        A player who is league age 8 for the current season and has played a year in Machine Pitch may “play up" in the Minor division with board approval.

•        A player who is league age 10 for the current season and has played a year in Minors may “play up" in the Major division with board approval.

•        A player who is league age 9 could "play down" in the Machine Pitch division with board approval.

•        Any player who is league age 11 or 12 could "play down" in the Minors division with board approval.

Any player requesting to “play up” must attend the Skills Evaluation Day. A panel of board members and coaches will evaluate the player’s skills and collectively give the Player Agent their recommendation. (Parents & past Coaches may also be contacted by the Board for player references.) The Player Agent will bring recommendations before the Board for discussion and a vote for action.

***Note: The assignment of divisional play level will impact what All-Star squad that the player is eligible to be nominated to.
Example: a 12 year old that plays in the Junior Division can only be on the roster of the 13-14 year old All-Stars. Only players from the Major League Division are eligible for the 12 year old All-Stars squad.

**All of these requests are secondary to number of players already eligible to play in a designated division. We will not move players up if it will push the number of players above an optimal level which allows for sufficient instructional and playing time for all players on all teams.

. Change of Team Request (Pre & Post Draft)
These will be handles on a case by case basis. Parents that insist or request that their child not play for a certain coach(es) or not with other player(s) will be handled in this manor. These cases will need to be extreme situations to allow serious consideration.

SKills Assessment Day
The Dallas Center Grimes Little League Player Assessment Day will be held on Saturday March 1, 2008 at the Dallas Center Middle School gym.

Drafting teams is an important part of the Little League process. With all of the new player participants we find it necessary to have a “skills evaluation” day. We will conduct this evaluation at the Minors and Majors level only(9-12). Players will be evaluated on hitting, throwing, and fielding. Our intent is to provide coaches some information about the kids participating in the league prior to the draft. What we hope happens is that we will have more parity among the league. This will provide for a more satisfying and rewarding experience for both players and coaches.

This will also help the Board to properly assign players to the appropriate division of play based on a combination of their skills, experience & age. This will be basis for creating the pools of available players for each division’s draft.
The coaches will use their observations of the players at the skills day, & along with information from past seasons of which player have played at what positions to be able to draft the right players to fill out the roster of their teams.
Players need to wear tennis shoes & appropriate clothing for the activities (sweats, t-shirt, shorts).
Players also need to bring gloves & bats if they have a preferred one.

Schedule will follow oldest players first moving is order to the youngest.
12 year olds               9:30AM-10:30AM
11 year olds               10:30AM-11:30AM
10 year olds               11:30AM-12:45PM
8 & 9 year olds            12:45PM-2:00PM
Times may change slightly to adjust for the number of players in the different age groups.

***Any player petitioning to play up must attend the Skills Assessment day in order for the Board to be able to determine if the player skills warrant granting the request.***
