Code of Ethics for Managers/Coaches, Players and Spectators
Adopted and Approved by DC Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Baseball League
Spring 2000
Managers/Coaches:
By example of behavior, the manager and coach have a great impact on his or her team, the players, parents and other team supporters. The manager and coach have an affirmative obligation to create a constructive, enjoyable and non-hostile environment in which the game is played. Disputes as to rules and their application or judgment calls may only be raised in a dignified, brief and non-aggressive manner and to the extent satisfaction is not attained; managers should simply play the game under appeal. Appeals will be determined by the Rules Committee. Accordingly, it is the policy of DC Babe Ruth Baseball, Inc. that each manager and coach shall:
Be concerned for the safety and welfare of each participant.
Abide by a doctor’s decision in all matters of a player’s health and injuries
and ability to play.
Not allow a player to enter or re-enter a game if there is any doubt as to
the seriousness of the player’s injury.
Inspect the environment and the equipment of each participant.
Attend training clinics and CPR/first sessions.
Never use any physical means against spectators, players, officials or other
managers or coaches.
Not unduly criticize players in front of spectators or other players.
Criticism should be constructive in nature.
Refrain from using profanity to a youth or in the conduct of activities
dealing with youngsters.
Accept gracefully the decision of officials, as being fair and called to the
best ability of the official.
Not criticize, aggravate or incite the opposing team, coaches or fans, by
word of mouth or gesture.
Not consume alcoholic beverages or use illegal drugs and/or appear under
under the influence of same when dealing with youngsters.
Not utilize or allow players to utilize tobacco products, including
smokeless or chewing tobacco, during games or practices.
Be responsible for the conduct of the players, coaches, parents and supporters of his/her team members during games and take reasonable action to secure their comportment with the principles of this Code of Ethics.
Violations of this Code of Ethics shall be considered a serious matter by the Board and could subject the violator to appropriate action, including separation from the league. Reports of or disputes relating to possible violations shall be brought to the attention of the Chief Commissioner. A committee will be established to resolve conduct abuses that can not be handled at the coach/manager level.
