13 Year Old Racing Sensation – Super Davey Matthews
“The Next Generation of NASCAR”
In 2003, Super Davey Matthews started his racing career at the age of 7 taking the wheel of his first quarter midget. Only one month after graduating from the Novice division, Davey headed to Indianapolis get a taste at competing on a National level. He ran his first Grand Nationals event finishing 20th out of 110 cars.
As he began 2004, Davey gained momentum climbing into a new Lightning Chassis quarter midget and driving it around the track a record speed. Davey took 4 pole positions and set 1 track record in 2004. As heads began to turn, Davey headed west to compete in his 2nd Grand National event of his career. And turn heads he did, as he became the 2004 Quarter Midget National Champion in the Jr. Honda Division. This National title brought Davey prosperity as Lightning Chassis signed him to a sponsorship as the “house” driver promoting the quarter midget manufacturer.
2005 brought many more accomplishments for Super Davey. He dominated his home state track in Cumming, Georgia taking 9 of 13 feature wins in the Light 160 Division and was named “Two Time” Georgia State Champion taking the Senior Honda and Light 160 Divisions. He also had an astounding record with 11 pole positions and 6 tracks records putting his name in the books all over the Southeast. Davey also set a new track record at the Grand Nationals in the Light 160 Division in 2005.
During 2006, Davey toured the United States racing his Lightning Chassis’ cars in 3 divisions at any given event. Gaining more and more experience while becoming very versatile racing at numerous tracks nationwide, Davey continued to make a name for himself. Competing at both the Eastern and Western Grand National events, Davey made a statement loud and clear – Eastern and Western Grand National Runner Up in the Light 160 Division. He competed on both sides of the continent racing the best in the country and took home an awesome 2nd place finish at each National event.
2007 opened a new chapter in Davey’s racing career, as he embarked into the 600 racing circuit with a Bandolero stock car. Super Davey didn’t take long to turn some heads, especially NASCAR Broadcaster, Bob Dillner. Taking Davey in his Driver Development Program helped Super D to quickly rise to the top of his class. Continuing his winning ways, under Dillner’s direction, he captured 35 victories and the 2007 Georgia State Champion title.
By years’ end, he was ranked 5th in the Nation and was the Runner Up in his first year competing at the Summer Shootout @ Lowes Motor Speedway. Matthews was also named on the “Tower of Power” top 10 drivers in the Nation.Davey won at every track he visited during the 2007 racing season and dominated the Bandolero Regional Championship Race setting Fast Time and Winning the Feature @ OCR in North Carolina. He also won 4 of 10 Features @ Thursday Thunder in Atlanta and was the Zaxby’s Bandit Hard Charger of the Year for 2007 passing more cars than any other driver. And a hard charger he is, he raced 3 different tracks, in three different states, on three consecutive days taking the feature win at all three!
It was decided in September 2007 to move on to Legends Cars and get a jump start on the 2008 Racing Season. Upon approval from 600 Racing to be licensed at 12 years old (a Legends license normally requires a driver be at least 14) as one of the youngest Legends drivers in the United States, Davey was excited to show his talent as an up and coming driver. His talent beckons the potential he has to make it in NASCAR like many other Legends drivers have before him, Kyle and Kurt Busch, Reed Sorenson, Joey Logano and David Ragen. Bill Elliott recently said to Davey “A Legends car is one of the hardest cars to drive, if you can drive a Legends car you can drive anything!” This piece of advice gave Super Davey the challenge.
The Challenge brought Matthews raw talent to the surface in 2008, taking 7 victories in the Semi Pro division and finishing the season ranked 12th in the Nation. As a Rookie Legends driver, this is unheard of. He continues his personal goal of winning at every track he drives.
Now as he sets his eyes on 2009, his talent continues to gain momentum. His early Legends success has landed him a Driver Development seat for 2009 with Reaid Motorsports. Check out Davey’s racing schedule for 2009.
Toys for Tots continues to be near and dear to Super Davey’s heart. In his 3rd year collecting toys and providing exposure for the Marines’ Toy program year round, Davey never gets tired of collecting toys. His biggest Victory is off the track in December every year when he gets assist in passing out the toys he helped to collect to fulfill the dreams of so many children who would otherwise not have a Christmas. While Matthews continually studies the art of driving a race car he also maintains balance in his studies in school as well as making the rounds with numerous appearances for his Sponsors during the season. Davey is a 7th grader at Villa Rica Middle School in Villas Rica, Georgia and a member of The Church at Mirror Lake. Making A’s on his report card, he works as hard at school as he does on the race track. Davey’s other hobbies include: fishing, skiing and driving anything with a motor.
