What an incredible banquet! Thank you to all the parents who pitched in to help clean up last night but there a few folks who need a special extra thank you.
In the confusion of the evening and while trying not to forget anyone I [Mark] forgot to offer my sincere appreciation to Coach Andrew and Mitzi for their dedication and support for our athletes and the parents on these teams. Unfortunately, it is after the fact that I realized my blunder. My apologies to them. Thank you for the awesome goodie bags.
And the list of accolades continues….
Coach Amy – for her enthusiastic support and love of the players on this team and the extra touches.
Robert and Ruth Seawell – for bleeding purple and gold and being the engine that drives the Daphne soccer booster club year after year.
Host of Soccer moms who showed up yesterday to decorate – Lori Cummings, Janet Brown, Lora Kenny, Michelle Ahern, Carol Higginbotham, Amy Windley, Melanie Simison…I know I am missing someone!
Lori Cox – for the Daphne Trojan Cakes
Daphne Civic Center - Jason and etal. who were so helpful throughout the long evening
A Huge Thank You to the Avalos Family and Old Mexico who prepared such an incredible feast for a troop of folks!
AND finally….to Lavonne Lane who orchestrated the entire evening. She did an outstanding job and her attention to detail made for an incredible and special evening that will be remembered for a long time. We can’t thank her enough!
Good luck to all our graduates and to our returning players. Remember all the opportunities you have to work on your game the rest of the year. Consider attending a soccer camp and playing some type of soccer this fall. There are a tremendous amount of offerings in our area now….check out the list below! WE WILL BE BACK AT STATE NEXT YEAR! I want to thank everyone again for a great season and the outstanding support for our program. Also wanted to apologize to everyone, I really hoped we could make another run this year, however, we ran into some speed bumps we couldn’t overcome Tuesday night. I am very proud of how our teams ended their seasons in spite of the set back, your children played with so much heart and passion and never quit until the final whistle. That effort is to be commended and applauded and is due to you as parents and the positive qualities that you have instilled into your children. The final goal was not achieved but now we must look at all that was accomplished. Five players signing college scholarships, 9 children being selected to various All-Star games, and the numerous team accomplishments this year. The boys winning 19 games and the girls 17, beating both Fairhope teams in the same evening an accomplishment that hasn’t been achieved in over 6 years. Team rankings and playing for Sectional championships, our jv programs growing and playing great soccer. The boys and girls jv teams not only having winning records but convincingly showing that we are one of the top teams to be contended with. I want to thank Coach Amy and Coach (officer) Jackson for their commitment and dedication.
Please have your child bring their uniforms to school as soon as possible, we need to get them turned in and put away for next year. They can bring it to my room (133) anytime during the day.
Also, please make plans to join us for the end of the year banquet , Wednesday May 16th Daphne civic Center at 6:00 pm. All JV and Varsity players and their families are invited. We do need a head count so please RSVP your player and how many family members will be attending to rseawell@larsonmcgowin.com. It will be a very special night to honor our graduating seniors and the highlights of this year's season.
Wednesday, May 2
Both the girls and boys return trip to the final four got stopped short with disappointing losses in the 2nd round. Girls lost 2-1 to MGM in overtime after dominating what seemed like the entire game. Boys lost to Davidson 3-1 after falling behind early, recovering to dominate but unable to find the goal in the second half despite many excellent shots on goal. It just wasn't our night.
Girls end the season with 12 wins, 7 losses, 1 tie
Boys end the season with 17 wins and only 4 losses
It was a great season and we will definitely miss our seniors, and the leadership and dedication they have given to Daphne High School and Daphne Soccer. Please make plans to join us as we honor them and all our other players at the end of the year banquet, Wednesday May 16th, 6:00 pm at the Daphne Civic Center.
Finally a huge thank you to the finest coaching staff around - Rick Andrew, DeJuan Jackson, Amy Windley!
So everybody pack your purple vuvuzela away in a safe spot and be ready to blast them loudly next year!
Go Trojans!
Monday, April 30
The girls and boys will travel on two separate buses with the girls leaving at 2:45 and the boys leaving after their pregame meal. NOTICE - The school administration has said that the girls can leave with their parents after their game as opposed to traveling to watching the boys play at 8:00 at University of Mobile. In order to do that though they MUST bring a note Tuesday morning to school and sign out after the game. The boys will go first to MGM and watch the girls play the first half and then travel by bus to prep for their game. Those girls who would like to watch the boys game will then travel by bus to University of Mobile. Coach Andrew will be traveling by helicopter between locations. JK
Sunday, April 29
Women come away with a 4-1 win of Baker and Men top Theodore 5-1. Both teams hit the road Tuesday to play the second round. The girls play Mary G Montgomery in Semmes at 5:00 Tuesday and the boys play Davidson at University of Mobile campus north Mobile. Directions listed on Locations.
MGM is undefeated and it is always a tough venue so please come over and support the Trojans!
Boys have to play a rather late game against Davidson at University of Mobile at 8:00. Davidson doesn't have a home field so that is why we have to travel there. Don't let the late hour stop you from coming over to support the boys though. We need to help both teams pull through the 2nd round.
If we win we advance to 3rd round and hopefully those game will be played at home on Saturday May 5th.
Banquet notice - Remember it scheduled for Wednesday May 16th at the Daphne Civic Center. The decorating committee is looking for Mexican hats/somberos and blankets to use in decorations. (Can you guess the theme?) Please let Ruth Seawell know if you have any, rseawell@larsonmcgowin.com. Thank you to those who have volunteered to help. We could use some more so please let Ruth know if you would like to help if you haven't done so already.
Remember there is a Wharf concert event this Friday, May 4th if you would like to work. You can do this even if you don't have TIPS training as along as you train by the end of May. Look for training dates in May soon to be announced. Let Michelle Ahern know if you are interested. This is a great opportunity for folks to work on their player fees for next year, $25 per person per event.
Thank you to Monica Sainz and Carmen Brisolara for taking pictures during our playoff game Saturday. We still need photos for the banquet so if you take pictures consider attending game 2 and snapping some for us. The more the better!

Both Daphne Women and Men’s Soccer Teams in Playoffs!
Although Daphne’s two teams failed to win the Section 2 Championship after losing tough games last week to McGill, coming in #2 might turn out to be our best ride to the Final Four anyway! Auburn, a favored winner in lots of polls for both men’s and women’s is in the bracket that McGill has to play out of. But we can take anything for granted because to get back this year, each team has to advance through three single elimination games over the next two weeks. This week our Trojan Soccer players will be practicing hard to be ready for the first game Saturday April 28th against the #3 teams from Section 1. Girls take on Baker at 3:00 and Boys take on Theodore at 5:00. Both games are at home. The second round playoffs will be Tuesday May 1st with times and location TBA.
Baker has an overall 11-6 record and is 6-4 in the section. Theodore is 10-9-1 overall and 5-5 in the section. They are also a relative newcomer to the playoffs. Please come out and support the Trojans as they take on their first opponents. Remember a loss means the season is over and we don’t want that!
For those wanting to follow the state playoff action Grissom High School has a great link which is updated automatically. Check it out! It has boys and girls as well as the other 5a, etc. brackets

I wanted to let everyone know that Will Carpenter, Levi Ehmke, and Lexi Elgin have all been selected to be in the North/South All Star Game. The game will be played in Montgomery Alabama in July. It is a junior soccer showcase game.
Terence Hinton, Jacob Olmsted, Rianna Gurvitz and Jaimie Breitweiser have all been selected to play in the 11th annual Alabama/Florida all star game. It will be held on May 19th, the top 16 players representing the aforementioned states will compete in Orange Beach at the Orange Beach Sports Complex. It is presented by Brine and it is a Senior Soccer Showcase.
On May 16th we will have a signing day for our seniors who have chosen and committed to schools. Jaimie Breitweiser and Terence Hinton have selected to play at Springhill University and Rianna Gurvitz has selected to play at West Alabama. Also Brandon Roberts will sign to play football at Delta State and Jacob Olmsted will sign to play football at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
These young people need to be recognized and congratulated on their hard work and dedication to their respective sport as well as recognition to their family for the many hours of sacrifices they made to enhance their child’s abilities.
Thanks to everyone for keeping our program running smoothly and be loud and proud tonight. Go Trojans!!!
Coach Andrew
Sunday, April 15
So this is a BIG week. This is the LAST week of regulation play. This is the week that Daphne Varsity Girls and Boys TAKE ON McGill. This is the week that Daphne Varsity go for the SECTION 2 Championship. Go Trojans!
Right now Daphne and McGill boys and girls are tied for 1st place in Region 2. While both teams have secured their playoff rights, the bragging rights for Region 2 is on the line. The Trojans will travel to Lipscomb Field “The Lip” Tuesday night, which is always a tough pitch. This one promises to be even bigger as McGill has been promoting the game on the radio and it is also a benefit for leukemia research. So come on Trojan fans we know how to travel across the bay with our purple and gold. Let’s bring this championship home! Girls kick off at 5:30 and Boys 7:30.
For those new to Daphne School, you might not realize the significance of this season. For the girls it will be the 10th year in a row they have made the playoffs. Of course, the last two years they made it to the final four in Huntsville, and last year to the championship round. In 2009 they won the Section 2 championship only to lose to McGill in Round 2. We have met McGill 5 times in the playoffs. The road to the final four seems to always go through McGill. This is true for the boys as well.
Last year the boys swept McGill in regular season play and advanced to the final four. It also marked the first time since 2006 they made it to the playoffs. Guess who they lost to in 2006…McGill. They made the playoffs in 2004, 2002 and 2001 losing to McGill again in 2002 in the final four. McGill went on to win the 6a championship that year. So you see, while we know Fairhope is big rival so is McGill!
So get your vuvuzelas ready and head over to the Lip Tuesday night and BRING the Section 2 championships to Champions Way!
Other News
JV Boys tied Fairhope boys and JV Girls won last week! They finish their season this week with two games. Also Varsity will play Robertsdale Friday night away but it shouldn’t matter to the playoff standings.
Soccer Banquet Date and Location Change
Due to conflicts with Hangout Festival, Dance Recitals, etc. the soccer banquet has been moved from Friday May 18th at Trojan Hall to Wednesday May 16th at Daphne Civic Center. For those interested in helping out please email Ruth Seawell rseawell@larsonmcgowin. We will be calling a meeting soon.
