Our Mission

The objective of the Danville Junior Basketball League is to represent our community ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and reverence, so that our youth may grow to be finer citizens.  It is the league’s objective to provide an opportunity for improvement in basketball skills and a “team play” mentality to all players.

The purpose of the recreational league is to teach basketball skills and develop basketball players, not outstanding teams.  The success of our recreational league should be judged on the progress of individuals rather than a team’s win-loss record.  Each coach’s role is to develop the individual to his/her greatest potential through the teaching of fundamental skills.  A coach who diverts from the curriculum in order to win games, cheats both the players and the league.

Travel Team Tryout Information

Tryouts for Girl’s travel teams, grade levels 2 – 8, are tentatively scheduled for August 13 & 14, with fall league play beginning in September. Second grade girls will be entered in the “C” league at the 3rd grade level, if there are sufficient numbers at tryouts. If not, they will be given the opportunity to play on a combined 2nd/3rd grade team.

Tryouts for Boy’s travel teams, grades 2 – 6, are tentatively scheduled for September 10 & 11, with league play beginning in late October. A second grade team will be formed to play in the “B” division of the 3rd grade league if there are sufficient numbers at tryouts. If not, they will be given the opportunity to play on a combined 2nd/3rd grade team.

The league has passed a modified process for selection of travel teams.  This reviews how travel teams are selected and the philosophy which the league approaches selection of coaching candidates.  We encourage you to review this process by reviewing it in its entirity under the Handouts section's "Travel Basketball Selection Handout."

Specific tryout schedules will be posted here, on the league website, when the actual date approaches. On line registration information/links will also be posted on this website in July.

Travel Team Coaches Wanted

The DJBL is actively recruiting head coaches for the various travel basketball teams. Please review the travel team information and head coaching expectations below. If you are interested, or have additional questions, please email Girl’s Travel Coordinator, Cindy Wills, at; Boy’s Travel Coordinator, Chris Tidd, at; or League President, Josh Hall, at

Head Coaching Expectations:

A prospective travel team head coach must:

Be willing to supervise both the “A” and the “B” teams at his/her practices for at least the fundamentals portion of the practice, understanding that one of the main goals of the travel league program is player development. Be willing to work with and advise the coach of the “B” team on practice plans and expectations in the separate portions of their practices. Understand that the DJBL travel teams are both competitive and developmental teams. While we are participating with the intention of winning, the developmental aspect of the games, for all team members, cannot be forgotten, as it is the core philosophy of the league. Understand that, while playing time is not guaranteed to any player, a player who has attended practices regularly and participated in same should see some playing time in every game, and should reasonably expect to see additional time in a game that is not close, where the outcome is not in doubt. Complaints to the board on this matter will be taken very seriously, and the coach should plan to get everyone in the game early, so that this is not a consideration at the end of the game. The exception to this expectation would be a player who has consistently missed practice, or misbehaved at practice. The intention to not play a team member in a game should be discussed with the travel coordinator beforehand, if possible, as well as with the player and his/her parents. Another possible exception would be a tournament elimination game that is closely contested throughout. Communicate and reach an understanding with the players and his/her expectations about practice attendance, playing time and behavior on and off the court. Communicate and reach an understanding with the parents regarding practice attendance, playing time and other expectations of their son/daughter, as well as a very clear understanding of the expected behavior of the parents (and any siblings/guests) attending either practices or games, so that he/she does not need to waste time at practice supervising non-players (or asking the DJBL board to exclude someone from practices or games).

Policy for Weather Related Delays/Cancellations

Should weather affect road conditions and it is deemed unsafe by the league and school system for our boys and girls in the DJBL (rec league or travel) to participate in practices or games, the DJBL will post a cancellation notice on this website as well as on our Facebook "Like" page at The DJBL on Facebook.

There is no guarantee that league games will be made up when cancelled due to weather, however league VPs may approve a change is games schedule to make up these games.
