How college coaches learn about and see potential recruits has changed since I was a player. Now, potential recruits contact the coaches by internet and email. You will need to contact the coach of the school you are interested in by going to the college's website and either contact the coach by email or fill out the potential recruit forms on the websites. Don't be surprised if you get no response right away. This depends on the coach's time and NCAA rules. Here are some suggestions:
1. Get film of yourself playing in our matches.
2. Don't contact the coach during the time his team is in season. If you wait until off-season, the coach has more time to read what you submit.
3. Call the Sports Information Office and set up a visit with the coach and ask if he can give you a tour of campus. This gives him one on one time with you and your family and you will get to know each other. Dress to impress.
4. This is like getting a job. Show interest and maintain contact with the coach. Go see the team play and let the coach know you are coming.
5. Get a copy of your high school transcripts and any and all SAT or related testing scores. This is a very important step in the process. Have copies available if you meet with the coach.
6. Stay in shape and maintain the highest grades possible.
7. Play soccer during the off-season at the highest level you can achieve.
8. You will need my contact info. 434-822-7609 at home and email is vasaunders@webtv.net
9. Be realistic in your goal setting and at the same time don't let your dreams go. Playing at powerhouse University of Indiana is probably not going to happen.
10. Your education is the most important part of the process. It is what you go to college to get. Make sure everything is a good fit.
