Central Virginia Youth Roller Hockey League: About CVYRHL

Central Virginia Youth Roller Hockey League
The Central Virginia Youth Roller Hockey League is the premier inline hockey league of central Virginia!  We offer FUN and highly competitive hockey!

The league has 3 seasons.  They are Winter (January through April/May), Summer (June through August), and Fall (September through December).

There are 4 age divisions.  The Squirts are for youth 8 and under, the Peewees are for youth 10 and under, the Juniors are for youth 13 and under, and the Seniors are for youth 17 and under.

The league plays out of Ashland Skateland.  This facility has a coated wooden floor which works great for the ball that is used in this inline hockey league.  The ball creates a fast-paced and action filled game and keeps the kids skating hard!

In the squirts, the league runs the games with an "A" and a "B" line.  This allows for the less experienced players to play together and not with the more experienced players.  Certain more advanced players are never allowed on the "B" line.  As players gain experience, they are able to play on both lines.  Once a player scores his 5th goal in a season, he is not allowed to score goals on the "B" line again that season and moves up to the "A" line.  This is great for the league and keeps the younger players interested in the game.  In this league, the "B" line is 5 on 5 and the "A" line is 4 on 4.  The "B" line players play the first 5 minutes of each period and the "A" line players play the last 6 minutes of each period.

In the Peewees, Juniors, and Seniors, the game is played 4 on 4 and all line changes are done on-the-fly.  The concept of an "A" and a "B" line does not exist.

Inline hockey is a great game to watch.  Because the CVYRHL has been around for over 10 years now, the level of competition is very high!  The league generally has a total of 23 and 36 teams each season.  In just the 8U age group alone, we have seen as many as 12 teams!  It's a sport that is growing in popularity, it's less expensive than ice hockey, is a good compliment to ice hockey, is a low time commitment, and it's FUN (and that's what is most important!).

In the past, there was a fear that inline hockey is bad for ice hockey players.  There are still some in the ice rinks that believe that is true.  Some are great coaches!  However, those that have experienced both have seen that inline hockey is a great compliment to ice hockey.  Yes, it's more difficult to stop on inline skates but it's not that hard to master.  Because inline hockey does not have offsides or icing and is 4 on 4, the game is fast paced and wide open.  The nature of the game gives the players more opportunity to stick handle which helps improve those skills!
