RED OUT Match!!!!

On Friday, October 3rd, Cumberland Valley will be hosting Commonwealth rival, Central Dauphin in a charity match showdown!  The Barrick teams are coming together to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through this RED OUT match.  This will be a special night full of activities, special food, and lots of raffles and great volleyball!  All money raised through concessions, admissions and raffles will be donated the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  We chose this charity in honor of Varsity player, Maddie Harbick, who is a leukemia survivor and Don Snyder, Cumberland Valley's first volleyball coach, who is a lymphoma survivor.  We encourage everyone to come out and support this event by wearing red (the color of this charity)!  If you have any questions, or are want to donate (monetary or other), please contact Danelle Barrick, dbarrick@cvschools.org

Game Highlights

With the Tournaments coming up and the RED OUT match fast approaching, I have been remiss in getting the game summaries in.  I will try to get them all in with this posting!

Thursday - September 18 - Carlisle - What a loud and tough gym to play in!  The electricity was in the air from the beginning!  The JV's started out struggling, but picked up their game BIG TIME and pulled out a huge 3rd game win, defeating the Herd 15-5.  The varsity match was down a setter to start the match as Carter Sheely was out sick.  The Lady Eagles made some adjustments, tried some different line-ups...all of which did not work AT ALL as we dropped the first 2 games 12-25 and 14-25.  It looked like it was going to be a short night when the girls finally found their mojo and turned the match around winning a big game 3, 28-26.  This fueled their fire as they won the 4th game as well, 25-22.   Although the Eagles gave a valiant effort in the 5th game...they fell short 8-15.  Maddie Harbick had a great night with 19 kills!

Saturday - September 20th - Grove City Varsity Tournament.  On Friday, the Lady Eagles headed west with Central Dauphin in tow, to participate in the Grove City High school tournament.  The Rams and Eagles had a great team dinner and fun in the hotel before they headed into battle the next day.  The Lady Eagles had a great morning pool play, emerging first in their pool with a 7-1 record and seeding them 2nd overall in the tournament.  The Lady Eagles were down one player, Mackenzie Sheely - to sickness and pretty much down 2-3 other players (Lavinia, Emily and Jenna) who were all sick as well....so to come out 1st was a great team effort.  The Lady Eagles faced Saegerstown in the quarters, defeated them 25-23 and faced Grove City in the Semi's.  The girls played awesome winning the first game, but the fatigue of the trip and the sickness caught up with them as they dropped the next 2 games.  Although we came out 3rd on the day...it was a great tournament full of valiant play!

Tuesday - September 23rd - Cedar Cliff - Arch nemisis Cedar Cliff.  Our schools and players are very close as all the coaches and players participate in the same club volleyball teams over the winter.  So everyone was ready for the battle and battle it was.  The JV team came away with a huge emotional win in 3 games which set up the varsity for their fight.  The game plan was perfectly executed as the Lady Eagles held the Colts only big hitter to 11 kills.  Kristin Shanabrook was a WALL at the net, shutting her down all over the place.  But too many errors on our part, took us away from the win.  It was a great 4 game match that hopefully the outcome will be reversed when they visit us on Senior night.

Thursday - September 25th - Chambersburg - This was the start of the 2nd round of the season.  The second time we encountered Chambersburg and the outcome was still the same...for varsity.  JV did an awesome job of pulling out of a 1st game slump to win the next 2 games, silencing the rowdy Chambersburg crowd.  The Varsity team took the floor and control of the match early, as they won the first game 25-19.  Something took over the team after that and deja vu set in as the exact repeat of the first match between the two teams played out again.  Game 4 saw the same thing as the first match....CV taking the early lead 10-5, then the bottom fell out as Chambersburg rolled off 15 pts. in a row to completely take the Eagles out of the game and eventual match.

BLITZ successful! RED OUT game approaching fast!
Yesterday afternoon, the Lady Eagles set out to blitz the businesses on the Carlisle Pike looking for donations for the RED OUT charity match on October 3rd.  The girls were very successful in their endeavors and the businesses were very receptive.  We thank everyone who has donated so far and encourage anyone that still wants to donate to contact Rochelle Harbick or Michelle Brennan.  I have attached the donation letter with their information and information for any donations.

CD Match - Tense and exciting - as expected!

The first season match-up between the Barrick teams brought a lot of fire as everyone expected.  The JV match set the tone as the 2 teams battled back and forth before CV came out victorious in the 3rd game.  The varsity match promised to be a battle not only between the teams, but between the coaches.  At first....the battle seemed lost to CD as the Lady Eagles struggled to find any kind of rhythm as they gave CD the first 2 games through mistakes of their own.  Finally, on the brink of being swept in 3 games, CV came to life through the deadly serve of Emily Shaffer who took the Rams completely out of their comfort zone in serve receive.  The Eagle jumped on this opportunity and took the next 2 games.  Ah...the dreaded 5th game....but...the Eagles fought back and deserved to be there.  It was a back and forth game, right up to 10-10 when the Rams took control and the eventual win.  The Lady Eagles fought hard and never gave up, although they were 2 games down.  Sophomore Opposite hitter, Lauren Dentler led the team in kills with 11.  Great job ladies.  Keep your heads up and set your sights on East.

Varsity take 1st in Silver Bracket of St. Francis Tournment
The Lady Eagles traveled to Loretto, PA over the weekend to participate in the St. Francis University varsity tournament.  The tournament featured 29 teams in 6 pools.  Due to whatever circumstances, one team dropped from our pool, leaving us with 4 teams in the morning pool play.  This was a HUGE disadvantage for us once the playoffs came around as the 1st criteria for advancement was % of wins/losses.  Being in a pool of 4 teams, we only played 6 games to everyone else's 8 games, so from the get go...we were behind.  The Eagles played hot and cold during the morning coming out tied for first in the pool with a 4-2 record.  Because of the unfair % rule, we ended up in the Silver playoffs in the afternoon.  We also waited 3 hours in the afternoon to even play as our pool ended 2 1/2 hours before any other pool.  I digress.....anyway....the ladies really picked up the play in playoffs, winning quarters and semi's in easy 2 game sweeps.  The final pitted us against Penns Manor.  Game one went to the hot Eagles, Game 2 should have gone that way also, but we put the cart before the horse and let the lead slip away.  Game 3 never was a game as the Eagles cruised to the win.  Tired but victorious...the Eagles didn't arrive home till after midnight...but the day was a success as the Eagles went 10-3 on the day.  Congratulations to Katlyn Brennan, Lavinia Seretti and Erin Gould for making the all-tournament team!

Lady Eagles Victorious at Home

The Lady Eagles defeated visiting Lower Dauphin in both the JV and Varsity matches last night.  The JV squad looks like they are starting to come together as a squad and play well together.  They had a really strong showing at our home tournament this past weekend, placing 3rd out of 20 teams and they are continuing to improve with every match!

The Varsity squad started a little slow, but Emily Shaffer soon brought them back to life serving 10 points in a row!  The varsity squad kept their composure the rest of the match and despite a couple of line-up changes here and there, did a good job of winning in 3 games.

Carlisle is next up on the plate and this will be a good test of the Lady Eagles to see if they have what it takes to make a run at the Mid-Penn title!

Eagles show promise in opener against Chambersburg

Last night marked the opening of the 2008 girl's volleyball season.  As luck would have it the dreaded CV/Chambersburg showdown was first up to bat.  The JV girls, full of raw, young talent took the stage first.  The first game was full of jitters from the veterens, but also gave a look at some of the talent on this team.  The JV team was missing their vetern libero to sickness, but newbie, Rebecca Emmert stepped in nicely to the role.  This was one of the better JV matches we have seen and although CV fell short in their endeavor to win, it is evident that the talent is there, the experience will come and the freshman will step up.

The varsity match started with a bang with CV taking the early 1-0 game lead.  The young varsity team looked smooth, energized and united in their 25-21 win.  The 2nd game was a thing to forget as the Lady Eagles let down their guard and their passing, as they went on to lose 13-25.  The 3rd game saw some revitalization, although still falling short 17-25.  Game 4 was a barn burner!  The game 1 team was back and in full force.  There was a determination and competitiveness that was missing from the middle games.  Although the eventual outcome was a loss 27-29....it none the less proved that CV is a team to be reckoned with this year.  We will see Chambersburg again, and the outcome may be something to surprise everyone!

Game leaders vs. Chambersburg -

Maddie Harbick with 8 blocks and 8 kills

Jenna Orner with 14 assists

Varsity team looks strong in opening tournament

The varsity team traveled to Central Dauphin over the weekend for the annual Creason Classic Varsity volleyball tournment.  This was the opening tournament of the season and the Lady Eagles looked great and has many strengths to build upon for the season.  Morning pool play yielded HUGE wins over Mechanicsburg, Ephrata and a split with Littlestown.  CV advanced to the afternoon GOLD pool play finishing first in their morning pool.  The afternoon pool play was a little shaky for the girls, but we will blame that on the Central Dauphin's sneaky mind games, which took a usually solid CV team out of their element.  After a 2 game drop to CD, the Eagles bounced back to take 2 from Marple Newtown.  The fate of playoffs lay in needing 2 games from York Suburban.  The first game was a nail biter and just when we thought we had them...a few errant calls and an out of rotation took the game and the playoffs from our grasps.  We finished the afternoon in 3rd place in the pool, but learned some valuable lessons about focusing.  All in all, the day was a huge success as they are some real signs of greatness from this team.  Look for awesome things to happen this season!

2008 Middle School Camp HUGE Success!!!!

The 5th annual CV Middle School Girl's Volleyball Camp was the biggest one yet and a huge success!  Over 70 girls in grades 5-9 participated in the 4 day camp which had to be held in 2 gyms this year!  A big highlight of the camp was the defensive night held by Mike Schall, former Penn State Women's asst. coach and now current director of the Revolution Volleyball Club in Chambersburg.  Mike, his wife and Abby Leonard, asst. coach at Shippensburg University all ran an outstanding defensive clinic for the girls!  It is awesome to see how many young ladies are interested in learning the sport of volleyball.  Hopefully this enthusiasm will carry over into the district as we push to create a junior high program at CV.

We will be honoring our middle school campers at our home match vs. Hershey on Tuesday, September 30th.
